Indications for Locoregional Tumor Therapies: CRC Liver Metastases

2018

The liver represents the most affected site in patients affected by colorectal carcinoma (mCRC) [1]. More than half cases develop colorectal liver metastases (CLMs) during the evolution of the disease, and about one-quarter occur at the disease onset [1, 2]. To date, the standard treatment of CLM is represented by liver surgery, which has allowed to achieve interesting long-term survival rates (40-60%) [3] in reported series, while it is less than 25% for patients who do not undergo surgery [4]. Unfortunately, most patients (80%), however, are not immediately eligible for surgery [5, 6]. For these patients, surgical treatment may be administered in combination with chemotherapy regimens (+/…

A comparative statistical analysis between the italian local banks, the effects of the financial crisis on funding and credit policies

2014

This work intends to carry out a comparative statistics between Italian banks (both co-operative banks that banks) about their economic and corporate profiles in the period immediately before (2006-2007) and in the immediate aftermath (2008- 2011) to the international financial crisis. In this way, we will try to investigate whether the global economic shock caused any differences between these banks in their funding policies, credit policies.

Microbreweries, brewpubs and beerfirms in the Sicilian craft beer industry

2019

Purpose This paper aims to illustrate the organisational and managing models characterising the craft beer producers in Sicily (Southern Italy) and the main issues of the provision of raw materials. Design/methodology/approach A direct survey involving the overall population of 41 craft breweries operating in Sicily in 2016 was carried out. Then 29 questionnaires were collected for exploratory analysis. A hierarchical cluster analysis was also performed out to group companies by similar structural, productive and economic features. Findings The findings of the survey showed a Sicilian craft beer industry characterised by a substantial dependence on the import of malts hops and yeasts and t…

Maximum Torque per Ampere Control strategy for low-saliency ratio IPMSMs

2019

This paper deals with electrical drives employing low-saliency ratio interior permanent magnet synchronous motors. In particular, in order to help the designers choosing the best control algorithm, the performances of the Maximum Torque Per Ampere Control (MTPA) and the Field Orientation Control (FOC) are here both theoretically and experimentally assessed and compared, by using, as performance indicators, the torque-current ratio and the power losses. The tests are carried out on a low-power motor for various speeds and loads by implementing the two control strategies in a dSPACE® rapid prototyping system. The results show that the Maximum Torque Per Ampere algorithm has some appreciable a…

The macroeconomic effects of public investment: Evidence from advanced economies

2015

This paper provides new evidence of the macroeconomic effects of public investment in advanced economies. Using public investment forecast errors to identify the causal effect of government investment in a sample of 17 OECD economies since 1985 and model simulations, the paper finds that increased public investment raises output, both in the short term and in the long term, crowds in private investment, and reduces unemployment. Several factors shape the macroeconomic effects of public investment. When there is economic slack and monetary accommodation, demand effects are stronger, and the public-debt-to-GDP ratio may actually decline. Public investment is also more effective in boosting ou…

Do market regulations reduce investment? Evidence from European regions

2016

ABSTRACTDo market regulations reduce investment? Evidence from European regions. Regional Studies. This paper investigates the impact of market imperfections on non-farm business sector investment in European regions for 1995–2007, using dynamic panel and generalized method of moments (GMM) methods for estimating a Euler equation. The results show that barriers to entrepreneurship and to trade and investment decrease the productivity of capital, which has negative effects on European regions’ investment. Corruption leads to increased operational costs, creates uncertainty and thereby deters investment. Greater labour market regulation also means higher labour costs. Hiring and firing regula…

Diagnostic strategy in segmentation defect of the vertebrae: a retrospective study of 73 patients

2018

BackgroundSegmentation defects of the vertebrae (SDV) are non-specific features found in various syndromes. The molecular bases of SDV are not fully elucidated due to the wide range of phenotypes and classification issues. The genes involved are in the Notch signalling pathway, which is a key system in somitogenesis. Here we report on mutations identified in a diagnosis cohort of SDV. We focused on spondylocostal dysostosis (SCD) and the phenotype of these patients in order to establish a diagnostic strategy when confronted with SDV.Patients and methodsWe used DNA samples from a cohort of 73 patients and performed targeted sequencing of the five known SCD-causing genes (DLL3,MESP2,LFNG,HES7…

Female exogamy and gene pool diversification at the transition from the final neolithic to the early Bronze Age in central Europe

2017

Human mobility has been vigorously debated as a key factor for the spread of bronze technology and profound changes in burial practices as well as material culture in central Europe at the transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. However, the relevance of individual residential changes and their importance among specific age and sex groups are still poorly understood. Here, we present ancient DNA analysis, stable isotope data of oxygen, and radiogenic isotope ratios of strontium for 84 radiocarbon-dated skeletons from seven archaeological sites of the Late Neolithic Bell Beaker Complex and the Early Bronze Age from the Lech River valley in southern Bavaria, Germany. Complete mitocho…

Race Profiles of Rowers During the 2014 Youth Olympic Games

2018

Cerasola, D, Cataldo, A, Bellafiore, M, Traina, M, Palma, A, Bianco, A, and Capranica, L. Race profiles of rowers during the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. J Strength Cond Res 32(7): 2055-2060, 2018-Among the different factors affecting the outcome of elite rowing competitions, pacing strategy plays a relevant role. The purpose of this study was to analyze the race profiles of youth athletes competing at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games over a distance of 1,000 m. According to the competition outcome of sculling and sweep events, 96 youth (17-18 years) rowers (48 male and 48 female) were divided into winner (W), not winner (NW), qualified (Q), and not-qualified (NQ) athletes. The time during the 1,0…

Nest Site Selection by Kentish Plover Suggests a Trade-Off between Nest-Crypsis and Predator Detection Strategies

2014

Predation is one of the main causes of adult mortality and breeding failure for ground-nesting birds. Micro-habitat structure around nests plays a critical role in minimizing predation risk. Plovers nest in sites with little vegetation cover to maximize the incubating adult visibility, but many studies suggest a trade-off between nest-crypsis and predator detection strategies. However, this trade-off has not been explored in detail because methods used so far do not allow estimating the visibility with regards to critical factors such as slope or plant permeability to vision. Here, we tested the hypothesis that Kentish plovers select exposed sites according to a predator detection strategy,…
