Estimation of the fatigue life of high strength steel under variable-amplitude tension with torsion: Use of the energy parameter in the critical plane

Abstract The paper concerns application of the energy parameter, being a sum of the elastic and plastic strain energy density in the critical plane, for describing experimental data obtained in fatigue tests of 35NCD16 steel, subjected to constant amplitude tension-compression, torsion and variable amplitude tension-compression, torsion and combined proportional tension with torsion. It has been shown that the normal strain energy density in the critical plane is a suitable parameter for correlation of fatigue lives of 35NCD16 steel under considered kinds of loading. The critical plane is the plane where the normal strain energy density reaches its maximum value.
FT-Raman and QM/MM study of the interaction between histamine and DNA

The interaction between histamine and highly polymerized calf-thymus DNA has been investigated using FT-Raman spectroscopy and the hybrid QM/MM (quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics) methodology. Raman spectra of solutions containing histamine and calf-thymus DNA, at different molar ratios, were recorded. Solutions were prepared at physiological settings of pH and ionic strength, using both natural and heavy water as the solvent. In the present study, we investigated whether proangiogenic growth factors and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) induce favourable effects on cutaneous incisional wound healing in diabetic mice. The proangiogenic effects of human EPCs were initially analyzed using a HUVEC in vitro angiogenesis assay and an in vivo Matrigel assay in nude mice (n=12). In the present work we propose new variants of chiral stationary phases (CSP) with tert-butylcarbamoylquinine (tBuCQN) as chiral selector molecule. Four tBuCQN-CSPs with distinct bonding chemistries are compared in terms of their pH-dependent surface charge by ζ-potential determinations, by achiral and chiral liquid chromatographic tests and LC-ESI-MS hyphenation. In one embodiment tBuCQN was immobilized on 3-mercaptopropylmethylsilyl-modified silica by thiol-ene click reaction (brush type CSP with selector coverage of 0.38mmol/g). The role of electrostatics is studied in the adsorption of cationic proteins to zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine (PC) and anionic PC/phosphatidylglycerol (PG) mixed small unilamellarvesicles (SUVs). For model proteins the interaction is monitored vs. PG content at low ionic strength. The adsorption of lysozyme and myoglobin (isoelectric point, pl 7-11) is investigated in SUVs, along with changes of the fluorescence emission spectra of the cationic proteins, via their adsorption on SUVs. Edible films, based on sodium caseinate containing three different concentrations of ferulic acid or alpha-tocopherol (20, 40 and 60 mg/g sodium caseinate), were obtained in order to evaluate the effect of these compounds on properties of the caseinate matrices. Special emphasis was placed on their effect on the films' oxygen barrier properties, which are decisive in the prevention of the oxidation of foods containing lipids. Using tools effectively despite defective hand posture: A single-case study.

Apraxia, a cognitive disorder of motor control, can severely impair transitive actions (object-related) and may lead to action errors (e.g., rubbing a hammer on a nail instead of pounding it) and hand posture errors (e.g., grasping a tool in a wrong way). Here, we report a rare observation of a left-handed patient, left-lateralized for language, who developed a severe apraxia following a right brain lesion. Interestingly the patient showed a significant number of hand posture errors, while she perfectly demonstrated the actual use of tools. Abstract The solubility and thermodynamic stability of a synthetic liebigite was investigated in NaCl and NaClO4 solutions within a wide range of ionic strength (0.03 m ≤ Im ≤ 5.61 m), pH (7 ≤ pHm ≤ 9, with pHm = –log [H+]) and temperature (22 °C ≤ T ≤ 80 °C) conditions. A comprehensive characterization of the synthetic solid phase using XRD, quantitative chemical analysis, TG–DTA, SEM–EDS, IR and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the stoichiometry of Ca2UO2(CO3)3·10H2O(cr). At room temperature, liebigite remains stable and controls the solubility of U(VI) in the investigated NaCl and NaClO4 systems with Im ≤ 0.51 m.
