Micromechanisms of load transfer in a unidirectional carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy composite due to fibre failures: Part 3. Multiscale reconstruction…

2008

International audience; This third article describes a multiscale process which takes into account the most important microscopic phenomena associated with composite degradation, including fibre fractures and interfacial debonding, overloading of fibres neighbouring a fibre break as well as viscoelastic behaviour of the matrix. The results have been used to accurately predict the macroscopic failure of unidirectional carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy and quantify damage accumulation in pressure vessels made of the same material. The approach described has allowed the acoustic emission activity resulting from fibres breaks to be evaluated and shown how the residual lifetimes of such vessels, whe…

Complex Rating Curves for Sharp Crested Orifices and Rectangular or Triangular Weirs under Unsteady Flow Conditions

2021

The importance of discharge measurements is fully acknowledged in many research fields, mostly in hydrology. Numerous measurement devices and various overflow structures have been proposed for discharge measurements; however, their use is based on calibrated simple stage discharge relationships that may cause significant errors when unsteady flow conditions occur. This issue is quite common because of rainfall and runoff temporal variability that inhibits the achievement of the steady state. Although this issue has already been experimentally investigated, it seems that a physically based line of approach has not been attempted before. In this paper, unsteady stage discharge relationships o…

Monthly Hydrological Indicators to Assess Possible Alterations on Rivers’ Flow Regime

2018

Assessing potential deviations of the fundamental river basins’ hydrological processes and streamflow characteristics from the “natural trajectory” represents a high-priority objective to understand the biological impact of altered flow regime on river ecosystems. Existing approaches are mainly based on the analysis of daily-based indicators of hydrologic alteration, which requires wide database, including “pre-impact” and “post-impact” daily flow data frequently unavailable. The hydrological modeling is commonly used to face data missing problems or reconstruct natural conditions, even if models, especially at the daily scales, are often complex and computationally intensive. The use of si…

Housing Affordability in Metropolitan Areas. The Application of a Combination of the Ratio Income and Residual Income Approaches to Two Case Studies …

2017

Housing affordability problems have become more serious over the course of the last few decades and are now also affecting the middle-class, despite the fall in prices on the housing market. This study proposes a methodology to assess threshold-income as an index for measuring housing affordability by applying a combination of the ratio income and residual income approaches. The methodology is applied to two particular areas of Sicily in Italy as case studies consisting of medium-size metropolitan areas located in a less developed European region. The areas have been chosen on the basis of their different territorial structure: a polarized area that comprises a high-density city centre and …

Urban shrinkage became a central issue in both the scientific debate and the political agenda of several European cities. According to EUROSTAT data (2019) about 40% of European cities with more than 200000 inhabitants are losing population. A shrinkage that is more explicit in a progressive underutilization of the built heritage as well as in the concomitant increase of abandoned areas. In this controversial framework of structural mutation of the city urban policies in Europe try to decline the degrowth as a strategic opportunity to invest in green areas in order to increase urban quality and to act simultaneously on the development of local economies. With respect to the above framework this contribution focuses on the evaluation of the effects that the project of new public green spaces have generated on some sample areas on the outskirts of the city of Palermo. An urban context where according to the latest Svimez Report (2019) the phenomenon of urban shrinkage represents a constantly growing trend and on which the new Master Plan operates through a revival of interventions on environmental capital and urban green areas of the city.Settore ICAR/21 - Urbanistica

Frequency domain control based on quantitative feedback theory for vibration suppression in structures equipped with magnetorheological dampers

2009

This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article accepted for publication in Smart Materials and Structures. IOP Publishing Ltd is not responsible for any errors or omissions in this version of the manuscript or any version derived from it. The definitive publisher authenticated version is available online at http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/0964-1726/18/9/095041 This paper addresses the problem of designing quantitative feedback theory (QFT) based controllers for the vibration reduction in a structure equipped with an MR damper. In this way, the controller is designed in the frequency domain and the natural frequencies of the structure can be directly accounted for in the process. T…

A novel active contour model for unsupervised low-key image segmentation

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Central European Journal of Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.2478/s13531-012-0050-0 Unsupervised image segmentation is greatly useful in many vision-based applications. In this paper, we aim at the unsupervised low-key image segmentation. In low-key images, dark tone dominates the background, and gray level distribution of the foreground is heterogeneous. They widely exist in the areas of space exploration, machine vision, medical imaging, etc. In our algorithm, a novel active contour model with the probability density function of gamma distribution is proposed. The flexible gamma distribution gives a bet…

Vibration control of a base-isolated building using wavelets

2011

Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the 18th IFAC World Congress 2011. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.3182/20110828-6-IT-1002.03169 This paper proposes a numerical approach for finding an optimal control based on wavelet functions for vibration reduction of a base-isolated building subjected to actual earthquakes. The objective is two-fold: (1) to find a computational method using properties of Haar functions, and (2) to calculate controller gains approximately by solving only algebraic equations instead of solving the Riccati differential. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.

Semi-decentralized strategies in structural vibration control

2011

Published version of an article published in the journal: Modeling, Identification and Control. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4173/mic.2011.2.2 In this work, the main ideas involved in the design of overlapping and multi-overlapping controllers via the Inclusion Principle are discussed and illustrated in the context of the Structural Vibration Control of tall buildings under seismic excitation. A detailed theoretical background on the Inclusion Principle and the design of overlapping controllers is provided. Overlapping and multi-overlapping LQR controllers are designed for a simplied five-story building model. Numerical simulations are conducted to asses the pe…
