Digital Twin Technology for Bridge Maintenance using 3D Laser Scanning: A Review

2022

There has been a significant surge in the interest in adopting cutting-edge new technologies in the civil engineering industry in recent times that monitor the Internet of Things (IoT) data and control automation systems. By combining the real and digital worlds, digital technologies, such as Digital Twin, provide a high-level depiction of bridges and their assets. The inspection, evaluation, and management of infrastructure have experienced profound changes in technological advancement over the last decade. Technologies like laser scanners have emerged as a viable replacement for labor-intensive, costly, and dangerous traditional methods that risk health and safety. The new maintenance tec…

Intelligent estimation of wind farm performance with direct and indirect ‘point’ forecasting approaches integrating several NWP models

2022

Reliable wind power forecasting is essential for profitably trading wind energy in the electricity market and efficiently integrating wind-generated electricity into the power grids. In this paper, we propose short- and medium-term wind power forecasting systems targeted to the Nordic energy market, which integrate inputs on the wind flow conditions from three numerical weather prediction sources. A point forecasting scheme is adopted, which forecasts the power at the individual turbine level. Both direct and indirect forecasting approaches are considered and compared. An automated machine-learning pipeline, built and optimized using genetic programming, is implemented for developing the pr…

Thermo-piezo-rheological characterization of asphalt concrete

2022

The linear viscoelastic (LVE) properties of asphalt concrete is investigated in this paper using a controlled-strain triaxial dynamic modulus test over wide frequency, temperature, and confining pressure ranges. The time–temperature-pressure superposition principle (TTPSP) is applied to validate the thermo-piezo-rheological simplicity of the tested materials using triaxial master curves. The LVE response is found highly stress-dependent at intermediate and high temperatures. The Prony series modeling of time-domain properties ascertains that confining pressure strongly correlates with long-term relaxation modulus, the absolute maximum slope of the relaxation modulus, and viscoelastic damage…

Digital Twin framework for automated fault source detection and prediction for comfort performance evaluation of existing non-residential Norwegian b…

2023

Numerous buildings fall short of expectations regarding occupant satisfaction, sustainability, or energy efficiency. In this paper, the performance of buildings in terms of occupant comfort is evaluated using a probabilistic model based on Bayesian networks (BNs). The BN model is founded on an in-depth anal- ysis of satisfaction survey responses and a thorough study of building performance parameters. This study also presents a user-friendly visualization compatible with BIM to simplify data collecting in two case studies from Norway with data from 2019 to 2022. This paper proposes a novel Digital Twin approach for incorporating building information modeling (BIM) with real-time sensor data…

Condition classification of fibre ropes during cyclic bend over sheave testing using machine learning

2022

Fibre ropes have been shown to be a viable alternative to steel wire rope for offshore lifting operations. Visual inspection remains a common method of fibre rope condition monitoring and has the potential to be further automated by machine learning. This would provide a valuable aid to current inspection frameworks to make more accurate decisions on recertification or retirement of fibre ropes in operational use. Three different machine learning algorithms: decision tree, random forest and support vector machine are compared to classical statistical approaches such as logistic regression, k-nearest neighbours and Naïve-Bayes for condition classification for fibre ropes under cyclic-bend-ov…

Vehicle crashworthiness performance in frontal impact: Mathematical model using elastic pendulum

2022

Vehicle occupant injuries due to collisions cause many fatalities every year. Safe vehicle design plays a critical role in averting serious injuries to occupants and vulnerable road users in the event of a crash. In this paper we study a full frontal vehicle crash against a rigid barrier introducing a Lumped Parameter Model (LPM) inspired by the elastic pendulum motion. The model uses polar coordinates to simplify the problem and the governing equations have been defined using Lagrangian formulation. The Simulink model has been validated against Finite Element (FE) data demonstrating good correlation with pitching angle and maximum crush of the vehicle. These parameters are crucial for desi…

Comparative study of indirect tensile test and uniaxial compression test on asphalt mixtures: Dynamic modulus and stress-strain state

2023

Dynamic modulus is an essential parameter for the performance characterisation of asphalt materials for performance prediction and pavement design. The Indirect Tensile (IDT) test and the Uniaxial Compression (UC) test are both well-known experiments performed in the laboratory to characterise the dynamic modulus of asphalt mixtures over a range of temperatures and loading frequencies. A considerable amount of research has investigated the difference between two test modes, while few studies analysed the fundamental difference in stress–strain distributions for the two test setups. This work aims at comparing the effect of the two test methods on dynamic modulus of asphalt mixtures, as well…

Real-Time Detection of Incipient Inter-Turn Short Circuit and Sensor Faults in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives Based on Generalized Likelih…

2022

This paper presents a robust model-based technique to detect multiple faults in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), namely inter-turn short circuit (ITSC) and encoder faults. The proposed model is based on a structural analysis, which uses the dynamic mathematical model of a PMSM in an abc frame to evaluate the system’s structural model in matrix form. The just-determined and over-determined parts of the system are separated by a Dulmage–Mendelsohn decomposition tool. Subsequently, the analytical redundant relations obtained using the over-determined part of the system are used to form smaller redundant testable sub-models based on the number of defined fault terms. Furthermore, fo…

Draining and drying process development of the Tokamak Cooling Water System of ITER

2016

Abstract The ITER Organization (IO) developed a thermal-hydraulic (TH) model of the complex first wall and blanket (FW/BLK) cooling channels to determine gas flow rate and pressure required to effectively blow out the water in the FW/BLK. In addition, US ITER conducted experiments for selected geometries of FW/BLK flow channels to predict the blowout parameters. The analysis indicates that as low as 2 MPa of pressure difference over the blanket modules will ensure substantial evacuation of the water in blankets with just a few percent remaining in the blanket flow channels. A limited validation study indicates that the analysis yields less conservative results to compare against data collec…

Road Functional Classification Using Pattern Recognition Techniques

2019

The existing international standards suggest a methodology to assign a specific functional class to a road, by the values of some features, both geometrical and use-related. Sometimes, these characteristics are in contrast with each other and direct the analyst towards conflicting classes for a road or, worse, one or more of these features vary heterogeneously along the road. In these conditions, the analyst assigns the class that, by his capability and experience, he retains the most appropriate, in a very subjective way. On the contrary, the definition of an automatic procedure assuring an objective identification of the most appropriate functional class for each road would be desirable. …
