Air gasification of wood chips, wood pellets and grass pellets in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor
2021
Abstract Gasification is an attractive method for biomass-to-energy conversion and fluidized bed design is one of the best options for large scale operation. A bubbling fluidized bed reactor was used to analyze the effects of biomass type, equivalence ratio (ER) and temperature for product gas compositions. Wood chips, wood pellets and grass pellets were gasified between 650 °C and 800 °C temperature. The ER was varied between 0.08 and 0.16. Gasification of grass pellets was difficult at 800 °C due to agglomeration and the gas composition was poor compared to wood. The reactor performances improved over the temperature and 650 °C was not sufficient to achieve a reasonable carbon conversion.…
The effect of prolonged storage time on asphalt rubber binder properties
2019
Abstract This study wants to provide fundamental understanding of prolonged storage time on asphalt rubber binder properties by performing an investigation on the variation of conventional properties, rheology and morphology of four asphalt rubbers maintained at 180 °C in low shear for different digestion/storage times up to 48 h. The analysed asphalt rubbers were manufactured by combining two different asphalt binder grades, pen 35/50 and pen 50/70, with both cryogenic and ambient crumb rubber. Results have shown that keeping asphalt rubber agitated at the above mentioned processing conditions, up to 48 h, is significantly detrimental when an ambient crumb rubber is used, while it seems no…
The effects of laboratory ageing on rheological and fracture characteristics of different rubberised bitumens
2018
Ageing of bituminous materials can result in loss of the durability of a flexible pavement. Using rubberised bitumens can enhance pavement performance while at the same time it solves a serious waste disposal problem. Combining Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) additives with rubberised bitumens reduces the difficulties associated with the production of asphalt mixtures using this modified binder. This work was conducted to study the effect of ageing using fundamental parameters based on performance, i.e., CTOD and Glover-Rowe parameters have been related to pavement cracking. Different unmodified bitumens and rubberised bitumens were short-term aged using the Thin Film Oven Test (TFOT) and long- term…
A simple model for the calculation of the axial load-carrying capacity of corroded RC columns
2015
In the present paper, a simplified model is used to determine the axial load-carrying capacity of compressed short reinforced concrete columns subjected to corrosion processes. The model considers members with circular and square cross-sections and accounts for—cover spalling, —concrete core confinement induced by transverse steel reinforcement, —buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bars. Strength reduction in concrete cover and core due to cracking induced by rust formation, reduction of steel area in longitudinal bars and transverse stirrups due to general and pitting corrosion and loss of confinement pressure are considered. The load-carrying capacity and load-axial strain curves here ge…
Shear and flexural strength prediction of corroded R.C. beams
2017
Abstract The purpose of the work was the study of the structural safety of R.C. beams subjected to corrosion processes though the derivation of moment-curvature diagrams and moment-to-shear interaction diagrams. Normal-strength reinforced concrete beams with longitudinal bars in the presence of transverse stirrups and subjected to corrosion processed are considered. Experimental results available in the literature related to corrosion processes, for steel bars, crack openings and bond degradation due to rust formation are reviewed. Then analytical laws relating to crack opening, bond degradation with attack penetration depth, through a rearranged form of Faraday’s law, are presented. An ana…
Increasing the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams using pretensioned stainless steel ribbons
2017
In this work, the second part of an experimental campaign investigating the efficiency of an alternative retrofitting method for increasing the flexural and/or shear capacity in reinforced concrete beams, based on the use of prestressed stainless steel ribbons and steel angles, is presented and analytically reproduced. This group of tests focuses on the ability of the adopted retrofitting method to improve the shear strength and ultimate deformation of reinforced concrete structural elements. As described in a companion paper, the adopted retrofitting method is alternative to traditional techniques of reinforced concrete retrofitting, being easy to install and usually reversible, and charac…
Advanced Strategies and Materials for Reinforcing Normal and Disturbed Regions in Brick Masonry Columns
2016
This work presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behavior of 42 solid clay brick masonry columns internally strengthened by fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) fabrics or stainless steel grids placed in horizontal mortar joints. In some cases, every course, and in other cases, alternate courses were reinforced with steel grids, carbon, and basalt FRP fabrics. Monotonic compressive loading tests were carried out under concentric and eccentric loads. Eccentric tests were carried out by loading the specimens on a reduced area with respect to the entire cross section, producing a disturbed region (D-region). A detailed characterization of the constituent materials was made expe…
Ultrasonic inspection for the detection of debonding in CFRP-reinforced concrete
2017
Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites are extensively used to retrofit civil structures. However, the quality and the characteristics of the bond between the FRP and the structure are critical to ensure the efficacy of the retrofit. For this reason, effective non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods are often necessary to assess the bonding conditions. This article presents an ultrasonic technique for detecting defects at the FRP-substrate interface. The technique uses the Akaike Information Criterion, to detect automatically the onset of the ultrasonic signals, and the novel Equivalent Time Lenght (ETL) parameter, to quantify the energy of the propagating ultrasonic signals along the i…
Stress transfer and failure mechanisms in steel-concrete trussed beams: Experimental investigation on slab-thick and full-thick beams
2018
Abstract This study presents the results of an experimental investigation on semi-precast Hybrid Steel Trussed-Concrete Beams (HSTCBs) for analyzing the failure modes and the stress transfer mechanism between concrete and embedded steel elements (plate and truss). The available literature presents previous studies carried out by the authors mainly focused on the understanding of the local transfer mechanism by means of push-out tests. Conversely, in this paper original the results of laboratory tests conducted on six specimens of full-size HSTCBs subjected to four-point bending, with variation in the shear span, are reported on. From these results, the authors are able to assess the failure…
Brick Masonry Columns Externally Wrapped with Steel Wires under Concentric and Eccentric Loads
2017
This paper discusses an experimental investigation of clay brick columns that are externally strengthened by steel wire collars wrapping the horizontal mortar joints. The study aims to prove the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening technique and detect the efficiency of different numbers of steel collars. Additionally, the effect of eccentric loading is investigated. This paper proves that an analytical expression available in the previous literature can be modified to provide the strength of the equivalent homogeneous cross section in simple compression. To this aim, the biaxial strength domain of the bricks is modified to account for the lateral pressure exerted by the steel collar…
