Stability-Based Model Selection for High Throughput Genomic Data: An Algorithmic Paradigm
2012
Clustering is one of the most well known activities in scien- tific investigation and the object of research in many disciplines, ranging from Statistics to Computer Science. In this beautiful area, one of the most difficult challenges is the model selection problem, i.e., the identifi- cation of the correct number of clusters in a dataset. In the last decade, a few novel techniques for model selection, representing a sharp departure from previous ones in statistics, have been proposed and gained promi- nence for microarray data analysis. Among those, the stability-based methods are the most robust and best performing in terms of predic- tion, but the slowest in terms of time. Unfortunately…
The expressive power of the shuffle product
2010
International audience; There is an increasing interest in the shuffle product on formal languages, mainly because it is a standard tool for modeling process algebras. It still remains a mysterious operation on regular languages.Antonio Restivo proposed as a challenge to characterize the smallest class of languages containing the singletons and closed under Boolean operations, product and shuffle. This problem is still widely open, but we present some partial results on it. We also study some other smaller classes, including the smallest class containing the languages composed of a single word of length 2 which is closed under Boolean operations and shuffle by a letter (resp. shuffle by a l…
The ocular manifestations in IBD screening (OMIS) questionnaire: pilot study on detection of ocular involvement in inflammatory bowel diseases.
2020
Purpose: To assess the usefulness of a dedicated questionnaire for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) treated with biological drugs for the detection of ocular extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs). IBD can cause extraintestinal symptoms including ocular complaints which are frequently ignored and may be associated with significant morbidity, including blindness. Methods: We developed a questionnaire, named Ocular Manifestations in IBD Screening (OMIS) questionnaire, after agreement between gastroenterologists and ophthalmologists. The questionnaire was administered by a non-ophthalmologist physician to 96 IBD patients treated with biological drugs. Results: 35 patients (36.5%)…
Maximum weight relaxed cliques and Russian Doll Search revisited
2015
Trukhanov et al. [Trukhanov S, Balasubramaniam C, Balasundaram B, Butenko S (2013) Algorithms for detecting optimal hereditary structures in graphs, with application to clique relaxations. Comp. Opt. and Appl., 56(1), 113–130] used the Russian Doll Search (RDS) principle to effectively find maximum hereditary structures in graphs. Prominent examples of such hereditary structures are cliques and some clique relaxations intensely discussed and studied in network analysis. The effectiveness of the tailored RDS by Trukhanov et al. for s-plex and s-defective clique can be attributed to their cleverly designed incremental verification procedures used to distinguish feasible from infeasible struct…
Methylation Reprogramming and Chromosomal Aneuploidy in In Vivo Fertilized and Cloned Rabbit Preimplantation Embryos1
2004
Active demethylation of the paternal genome but not of the maternal genome occurs in fertilized mouse, rat, pig, and bovine zygotes. To study whether this early demethylation wave is important for embryonic development, we have analyzed the global methylation patterns of both in vivo-fertilized and cloned rabbit embryos. Anti-5-methylcytosine immunofluorescence of in vivo-fertilized rabbit embryos revealed that the equally high methylation levels of the paternal and maternal genomes are largely maintained from the zygote up to the 16-cell stage. The lack of detectable methylation changes in rabbit preimplantation embryos suggests that genome-wide demethylation is not an obligatory requireme…
Heat shock and Cd2+ exposure regulate PML and Daxx release from ND10 by independent mechanisms that modify the induction of heat-shock proteins 70 an…
2003
Nuclear domains called ND10 or PML bodies might function as nuclear depots by recruiting or releasing certain proteins. Although recruitment of proteins through interferon-induced upregulation and SUMO-1 modification level of PML had been defined, it is not known whether release of proteins is regulated and has physiological consequences. Exposure to sublethal environmental stress revealed a sequential release of ND10-associated proteins. Upon heat shock Daxx and Sp100 were released but PML remained, whereas exposure to subtoxic concentrations of CdCl2 induced the release of ND10-associated proteins, including PML, with Sp100 remaining in a few sites. In both cases, recovery times were simil…
American cockroach control assays in the municipal sewerage system of Valencia (Spain)
2013
ABSTRACT Several insecticides (including different active substances and formulations) were applied to sewer shafts to control Periplaneta americana (LINNAEUS, 1758) populations in Valencia (eastern Spain). Results show that the best products for cockroach control were the paints (with and without insecticide), which provided an optimal reduction of P. americana populations for up to three months (P < 0.001). Therefore, it is important to note that the reduction of cockroach populations as well as the persistence of the insecticide effect in sewers was similar in both types of paints. A product combining two pyrethroids (Tetramethrin and Alfacipermetrin) and piperonyl butoxide also gave …
The Parallel Structures Model and the weakening of implosive /s/ in Spanish
2020
Flavour: From food to perception
2016
Revue; This book will cover all aspects of flavour perception, including aroma, taste and the role of the trigeminal nerve, from the general composition of food to the perception at the peri-receptor and central level. This book will answer to a growing need for multidisciplinary approaches to better understand the mechanisms involved in flavour perception. The book presents the bases of anatomy of sensory perception. It will provide the requisite basic knowledge on the molecules responsible for flavour perception, on their release from the food matrix during the eating process in order to reach the chemosensory receptors, and on their retention and release from and transformation by bodily …
