Characterization of vitellogenins in Spilostethus pandurus (Hemiptera): Immunoelectrophoretic studies and short-term labelling experiments
1992
Abstract The haemolymph of Spilostethus pandurus contains three female-specific proteins (I, II and III) as revealed by SDS-PAGE. Antibodies prepared against them recognize three fractions (4, 5 and 6) in ovarian extracts which have similar molecular weights suggesting that I, II and III are vitellogenins. Upon injection of a 14C amino acid mixture into vitellogenic females, labelled proteins first appear in the fat body, then in the haemolymph and next in the ovarian follicles.
Glucose Diffusion Coefficients Determined from Concentration Profiles in Emt6 Tumor Spheroids Incubated in Radioactively Labeled L-Glucose
1994
In order to theoretically assess tissue energetic status, conditions for substance exchange need to be known. One group of parameters important in this context are diffusion coefficients of nutrients and metabolic waste products which may be assessed by incubating spheroids in a medium containing tracer amounts of the radioactively labeled substance in question, for a defined period of time. In previous studies, the overall amount of 14C-labeled substance taken up by the spheroids was measured by scintillation counters (e.g.[1]), or the concentration of 3H-labeled substance in the spheroid center was determined by autoradiography and grain counting (e.g. [4]). From a number of such measurem…

The bleaching efficacy of carbamide peroxide gels containing potassium nitrate desensitizer
2020
Background To evaluate the bleaching efficacy of at-home carbamide peroxide (CP) gels in two concentrations, containing or not a desensitizing agent. Material and methods Forty incisors were divided into four groups (n=10), according to gel concentrations (10% or 22%), and presence or not of 3% potassium nitrate in the gel. A thin layer of gel was applied to the buccal surface of each tooth for 2h/day for 4 weeks. Bleaching efficacy was measured using a spectrophotometer, and ∆E*ab, ∆E00 and ∆WID were calculated. Measurements were performed at baseline, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days following the first gel application. Data were analyzed by two-way RM-ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). Results R…
Effect of the color of the intraocular lens on optical and visual quality
2014
Purpose: To analyze the optical quality of intraocular lenses (IOL) with an orange (PC440Y) and a yellow (SN60AT) filter, and correlate these results with the visual quality of patients with these implants. Setting: Fisabio Oftalmología Médica, Valencia, Spain. Design: Randomized prospective study. Materials and Methods: The IOL optical quality was determined using the modulation transfer function (MTF) and the spectral transmission. The visual quality of 87 eyes with cataract (51 with orange filter and 36 with yellow filter) was determined by best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and contrast sensitivity function (CSF) under photopic and mesopic conditions. To analyze the results, we use a S…
The hedgehog receptor patched is involved in cholesterol transport.
2011
International audience; BACKGROUND: Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling plays a crucial role in growth and patterning during embryonic development, and also in stem cell maintenance and tissue regeneration in adults. Aberrant Shh pathway activation is involved in the development of many tumors, and one of the most affected Shh signaling steps found in these tumors is the regulation of the signaling receptor Smoothened by the Shh receptor Patched. In the present work, we investigated Patched activity and the mechanism by which Patched inhibits Smoothened. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using the well-known Shh-responding cell line of mouse fibroblasts NIH 3T3, we first observed that enhancement …
The mediterranean coast of Andalusia (sw spain): the impacts of human coastal structures
2015
Spanish coasts, especially the Andalusia Mediterranean one, were affected over time by progressive urbanization and associated construction of defense structures. Such structures protected small coastal sectors but at places triggered processes of coastal erosion and associated degradation of habitats and ecosystems. A correct management of coastal areas must be based on the monitoring of coastal evolution and human pressure. A useful tool to evaluate the level of human anthropization is the estimation of the "Coastal Armouring", e.g. the quantification of coastal defense structures, infrastructures, ports, etc. In this study, available aerial photographs and satellite images from 1956 to 2…
Mediterranean coccolith ecobiostratigraphy since the penultimate Glacial (the last 145,000years) and ecobioevent traceability
2015
The Mediterranean Sea is a miniature ocean ideal to test the response of marine ecosystems to amplified orbital and suborbital climate changes. Here we present coccolith data from a Sardinia Channel gravity core (Arcose C_33) analysed over the last 145,000 years, with a mean resolution of about 900 years. The study highlights that regional phytoplankton assemblages underwent significant modifications between the penultimate glacial and the last interglacial, as well as between the last glacial and the Holocene. The N ratio palaeoproductivity index suggests reduced productivity levels and the development of a deep nutricline during the last interglacial and the Holocene. Within the last glac…
Complex composite structures with integrated piezoelectric transducers
2016
International audience; Nowadays, in different industrial fields as transport or aerospace, a research effort is conducted to reduce the structural weight. One of the most promising solutions is the use of composite structures due to their high stiffness, their low mass density and their low damping factor. At the same time, there is an intensification of the operational dynamic environment and an increase of durability requirements. These different expectations seem to be contradictory. One solution to manage these points is to design and manufacture smart composite structures with a fully distributed set of integrated piezoelec-tric transducers. These structures are able to modify their m…
Chiroptical Phenomena in Reverse Micelles: The Case of (1R,2S)- Dodecyl (2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium Bromide (DMEB)
2014
(1R,2S)-Dodecyl(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium bromide (DMEB) aggregates dispersed in carbon tetrachloride have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at various surfactant concentration and water-to-surfactant molar ratio. Experimental data indicate that, even at the lowest investigated concentration and in absence of added water, DMEBmolecules associate in supramolecular assemblies. At higherDMEBconcentration the aggregates can confine watermolecules, making it plausible to think thatDMEB form reverse micelles and that watermolecules are quite uniformly distributed…
