Tumori femminili: gli script emozionali del proprio sé corporeo in relazione all’iter terapeutico e alle rappresentazioni del dominio maschile
2015
This text provides on reflection on the effects of experience of female cancer in the emotional sphere and in the gender relations of 36 women of South Italy. The research aimed discussing the role of medicine as a social practice that imposes the domination of traditional representations in which female beauty is equivalent to the physical integrity and full functioning of specific attributes sexed (uterus and breast). It is an analysis particularly focusing on the transformations of perception of body as Körper and the emotions which, cross-sectionally, constitutes the self-perception of Leib. The survey describes how language of medicine and power of male representations performs the sub…
Evaluation of a new nomogram for Ferrara ring segment implantation in keratoconus
2021
AIM: To evaluate the short-term clinical outcomes of Ferrara rings in keratoconus using an optimized nomogram developed after several years of research and retrospective analysis of clinical data. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal non-comparative clinical trial evaluated 88 eyes of 88 patients (age 18-62y) with keratoconus diagnosis from two Spanish centers. Ferrara ring segment (AJL Ophthalmic) implantation was performed in all cases, using the mechanical procedure in 25 eyes (28.4%) and a femtosecond laser-assisted procedure in 63 eyes (71.6%). The ring segments implanted in each case were selected using a new optimized nomogram that considered variables such as anterior corneal asph…
Effect of the Time Dependent Loading of Type IV Cylinders using a Multiscale Model
2019
International audience; The current requirements for composite cylinders are still based on an arbitrary approach derived from the behaviour of metal structures, that the designed burst pressure should be at least 2.5 times the maximum in-service pressure [1]. This could lead to an over-designed composite cylinder for which the weight saving would be less than optimum. Moreover, predicting the lifetime of composite cylinders is a challenging task due to their anisotropic characteristics. A federal research institute in Germany (BAM) has proposed a minimum load-cycle requirement that mitigates this issue by using a Monte-Carlo analysis of the burst test results [2-3]. To enrich this study, m…
The use of phage FCL-2 as an alternative to chemotherapy against columnaris disease in aquaculture
2015
Flavobacterium columnare, the causative agent of columnaris disease in fish, causes millions of dollars of losses in the US channel catfish industry alone, not to mention aquaculture industry worldwide. Novel methods are needed for the control and treatment of bacterial diseases in aquaculture to replace traditionally used chemotherapies. A potential solution could be the use of phages, i.e., bacterial viruses, host-specific and self-enriching particles that can be can easily distributed via water flow. We examined the efficacy of phages to combat columnaris disease. A previously isolated phage, FCL-2, infecting F. columnare, was characterized by sequencing. The 47 142 bp genome of the phag…
Synthesis, structure and photophysical properties of a highly luminescent terpyridine-diphenylacetylene hybrid fluorophore and its metal complexes
2014
A new fluorescent terpyridyl-diphenylacetylene hybrid fluorophore 4'-[4-{(4-methoxyphenyl)ethynyl}phenyl]-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, L, was synthesized via Sonogashira cross-coupling of 4'-(4-bromophenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine and 4-ethynylanisole in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4/CuI as a catalyst. The solid state structure of L shows a trans arrangement of pyridine nitrogen atoms along the interannular bond in the terpyridine domain. Five transition metal complexes of L, {[FeL2](CF3SO3)2 (1), [ZnL2](ClO4)2 (2), [CdL2](ClO4)2 (3), [RuL2](PF6)2 (4), and PtMe3IL (5)}, have also been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray analysis. The X-ray crystal structu…

Maternal antibody transmission and breeding densities in the Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus
2004
1. The offspring of avian species, especially those of colonial breeders, are exposed to a number of pathogens immediately after birth. The chick's immune system is, at that early stage still immature and inefficient. As a consequence, diseases can have a strong impact on chick survival.2. The ability of mothers to transmit passive immunity in terms of antibodies of their own acquired immunity to their chicks is probably an essential pathway to enhance the chick survival. Since the production of antibodies is costly, females are expected to adjust the transmission of passive immunity to the local disease environment.3. We found that in Black-headed Gulls (Larus ridibundus L.) yolk antibody …
Teschoviruses and sapeloviruses in faecal samples from wild boar in Spain
2013
Teschovirus and Sapelovirus are two genera of the Picornaviridae family, comprising highly variable and heterogeneous enteric viruses, commonly found in faecal samples from domestic pigs. Although both of them are also known to infect wild boar, studies on their presence in these wild suids are scarce. The present study aimed at determining the presence of porcine teschovirus (PTV) and sapelovirus (PSV) in free-living wild boar populations, as well as to study their relationships with similar viruses present in pigs. Fresh faecal samples (n = 63) from wild boar were collected in Doñana Biological Reserve (SW Spain) during 2007 and 2011, and analysed using multiplex RT-PCR for the simultaneo…
Transgenerational immunity in a bird-ectoparasite system: do maternally transferred antibodies affect parasite fecundity or the offspring's susceptib…
2009
During egg formation, female birds deposit antibodies against parasites and pathogens they were exposed to before egg laying into the yolk. In captive bird species, it has been shown that these maternal immunoglobulins (maternal yolk IgGs) can protect newly hatched offspring against infection. However, direct evidence for such benefits in wild birds is hitherto lacking. We investigated (1) if nestling Great Tits Parus major originating from eggs with naturally high levels of maternal yolk IgG are less susceptible to a common, nest-based ectoparasite, (2) if maternal yolk IgGs influence nestling development and in particular, their own immune defence, and (3) if there is a negative correlati…
