Distribution and Function of Gap Junction Coupling in Cortical GABAergic Neurons.

Although gap junctions have been observed in GABAergic interneurons of several brain regions, this chapter focuses on the distribution and functions of gap junctions and connexins in inhibitory interneurons of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Evidence for interconnections mediated by electrical synapses is reported for at least eight cerebral cortex interneuron types, classified on the basis of morphology, electrophysiology and molecular markers. The main differences in the organization of these interneuronal networks are summarized in terms of homologous and heterologous electrical coupling and mutual chemical inhibition. Light-dependent CK2-mediated phosphorylation of centrins regulates complex formation with visual G-protein.

AbstractCentrins are Ca2+-binding EF-hand proteins. All four known centrin isoforms are expressed in the ciliary apparatus of photoreceptor cells. Cen1p and Cen2p bind to the visual G-protein transducin in a strictly Ca2+-dependent way, which is thought to regulate light driven movements of transducin between photoreceptor cell compartments. These relatively slow motile processes represent a novel paradigm in light adaptation of photoreceptor cells.Here we validated specific phosphorylation as a novel regulator of centrins in photoreceptors. Abstract Purpose To compare the incidence and severity of photic phenomena after the implantation of the Array® (Allergan) refractive multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) and a monofocal IOL. Setting Multicenter study at Kiel, Mainz, Karlsruhe, and Bremerhaven, Germany. Methods The study comprised 231 randomly selected patients from 4 study centers. The patients had had uneventful phacoemulsification with implantation of a refractive MIOL (n = 138) or a monofocal IOL (n = 93). Classification of SD-OCT Volumes with LBP: Application to DME Detection

International audience; This paper addresses the problem of automatic classification of Spectral Domain OCT (SD-OCT) data for automatic identification of patients with Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) versus normal subjects. Our method is based on Local Binary Patterns (LBP) features to describe the texture of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images and we compare different LBP features extraction approaches to compute a single signature for the whole OCT volume. Purpose To study associations between body size at birth and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in old age. Methods The study sample consists of 1497 community-dwelling individuals (56.1% women) aged 67-89 years with birth data and retinal data collected twice in old age 5 years apart. Birth data (weight, length, birth order) were extracted from original birth records. Digital retinal photographs were graded to determine AMD status. Data on covariates were collected at the baseline physical examination in old age. Efferent projections of the medial cortex of the lizards Podarcis hispanica and Gallotia stehlinii were studied by examining the transport of horseradish peroxidase; results were correlated with those from Timm-stained sections. Two efferent systems were found. The first reaches the distal part of the outer plexiform layer in the medial, dorsomedial, and dorsal cortices, i.e., zones that are negative to Timm staining, and possibly originates from horizontal fusiform neurons.
