Early clinical outcomes after small incision lenticule extraction surgery (SMILE)

2018

Abstract Purpose Dry eye is known to impact on clinical outcomes after laser vision correction and the use of a newer ‘all femtosecond laser’ surgical approach may be associated with less impact on the ocular surface post-operatively. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the early clinical outcomes and tear instability after the first small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) cases undertaken by three surgeons at a single site in the UK. Methods Retrospective audit. Seventy-one eyes of 37 patients underwent SMILE surgery using the Zeiss VisuMax laser system (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany). Uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, spherical equivalent refraction, fluorescein en…

Eye Pain and Dry Eye in Patients with Fibromyalgia.

2018

Objectives The aim of this study was to examine visual function and eye symptoms in fibromyalgia patients, with a particular focus on dry eye syndrome and eye pain. Methods A tertiary care center-based cross-sectional study was carried out in chronic musculoskeletal pain patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Chronic musculoskeletal pain patients without fibromyalgia were enrolled as a comparison group. Self-reported eye pain was investigated with the McGill pain questionnaire and the numeric rating scale. In addition, we assessed corrected visual acuity, vision-related quality of life, and self-reported dry eye syndrome. Results A total of 90 musculoskeletal pain patients were included, wit…

Subjective fixation disparity affected by dynamic asymmetry, resting vergence, and nonius bias.

2011

PURPOSE This study was undertaken to investigate how subjectively measured fixation disparity can be explained by (1) the convergent-divergent asymmetry of vergence dynamics (called dynamic asymmetry) for a disparity vergence step stimulus of 1° (60 arc min), (2) the dark vergence, and (3) the nonius bias. METHODS Fixation disparity, dark vergence, and nonius bias were measured subjectively using nonius lines. Dynamic vergence step responses (both convergent and divergent) were measured objectively. RESULTS In 20 subjects (mean age, 24.5 ± 4.3 years, visual acuity, ≥1.0; all emmetropic except for one with myopia, wearing contact lenses), multiple regression analyses showed that 39% of the v…

Central retinal vein occlusion in young people.

1992

In a study performed on 20 subjects with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) aged 40 years or less we found the ischemic form in 20%. Disc edema was a common finding at the onset, while macular edema was less frequently seen. Systemic or ocular disorders that could be related with the development of the CRVO were often found; a patient was affected with myasthenia gravis and another with Sturge-Weber syndrome: these two diseases were not previously reported in association with CRVO. In only two of the 11 patients followed-up the visual acuity improved. The visual prognosis in CRVO of young people is often poor; the more frequent cause of the reduced visual acuity is chronic cystoid macula…

Intravitreal clindamycin and dexamethasone for zone 1 toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis at twenty-four months.

2009

Purpose To report the anatomic and functional outcomes of intravitreal clindamycin and dexamethasone for the treatment of zone 1 toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis (TRC). Patients had 1 or more of the following indications for local therapy: intolerance to oral medication, contraindication to oral medication because of pregnancy, lack of response despite oral antimicrobial treatment, or treatment with concomitant oral and local therapy to avoid or limit foveal or optic disc involvement. Design Noncomparative, retrospective, multicentric interventional case series. Participants We reviewed the medical records of 12 consecutive patients (eyes) with posterior pole (zone 1) TRC who were treated week…

Differences in visual performance of AcrySof ReSTOR IOL in high and low myopic eyes.

2009

PURPOSE To determine the differences in refractive and visual results obtained in eyes with high and low myopia after multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS Monocular visual acuity for distance and near, with and without distance correction, and photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity were measured at 6 months after surgery in 152 myopic eyes implanted with the AcrySof ReSTOR Natural (SN60D3) IOL. Two groups were created: high and low myopia (76 eyes in each). RESULTS Monocular best distance-corrected visual acuity was 0.02+/-0.06 logMAR for low myopes and 0.05+/-0.09 logMAR for high myopes. Monocular best distance-corrected near visual acuity was 0.04+/-0.05 and 0.07+/-0…

Bilateral maculopathy after exposure to a laser pointer: Optical coherence tomography angiography findings.

2018

Abstract Case report A 36-year-old man went to the emergency department the day after exposure to a laser pointer. Funduscopy revealed dispersed macular pigment alterations, and optical coherence tomography showed a disruption of the retinal layers. The visual acuity was counting fingers in both eyes. Nine months later, optical coherence tomography angiography showed a rarefaction in the choriocapillaris vascular flow in the area of the laser injuries. Discussion The retinal layer mainly damaged by the laser injury was the retinal pigment epithelium. However, it is suggested that the laser injury could involve tissues beyond the retinal pigment epithelium, since a rarefaction of the chorioc…

Elderly adults delay proprioceptive reweighting during the anticipation of collision avoidance when standing.

2012

The ability to reweight visual and proprioceptive information is critical for maintaining postural stability in a dynamic environment. In this study, we examined whether visual anticipation of collision avoidance (AV) while standing could facilitate the down-weighting of altered proprioception in young and elderly adults. Twelve young (24.91 ± 6.44 years) and 12 elderly (74.8 ± 6.42 years) participants stood upright for 180 s under two task conditions: (a) quiet stance (QS) and (b) standing while anticipating virtual objects to be avoided. In order to disrupt the accuracy of proprioceptive input participants were exposed to bilateral Achilles tendon vibration during the middle 60 s of stand…

Prevalence of dyslipidemia and associated risk factors in Turkish adults.

2013

Background and Objectives Dyslipidemia is a modifiable major risk factor for coronary heart disease. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of dyslipidemia among Turkish adults and its associations with other cardiovascular risk factors. Methods This study included 4309 people ages 20 to 83 years old from 7 provinces of Turkey. People from the city centers, districts, and villages were selected by a stratified sampling method. Weight, height, and waist and hip circumferences were measured. Blood samples were obtained to determine glucose, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides …

Timing of cell division in human cleavage-stage embryos is linked with blastocyst formation and quality

2012

Noninvasive markers of embryo quality are being sought to improve IVF success. The present study aimed to discover possible associations between embryo division kinetics in the cleavage stage, the subsequent ability of human embryos to reach the blastocyst stage and the resulting blastocyst morphology. A retrospective cohort study analysed 834 embryos from 165 oocyte donation couples using a time-lapse monitoring system that allowed the recording of the exact timings for key events related to embryo development. Timing parameters were categorized into four quartiles. The probability of an embryo developing to a blastocyst was linked to a strict chronology of development. To further evaluate…
