Promoter hypermethylation of tumor suppressor genes is a common feature of primary cancer cells. However, at date the somatic epigenetic events that occur in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) tumorigenesis are not yet been well defined. In the present study we analysed the methylation status of the gene hypermethylated in cancer-1 (hic1), a gene located on chromosome 17p13.3, a region frequently lost in HNSCC. The aim of this study was to determine the relevance of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4), CD28 and inducible costimulator (ICOS) polymorphisms in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
