Synthesis, Stability and Relaxivity of TEEPO-Met: An Organic Radical as a Potential Tumour Targeting Contrast Agent for Magnetic Resonance Imaging

2018

Cancer is a widespread and life-threatening disease and its early-stage diagnosis is vital. One of the most effective, non-invasive tools in medical diagnostics is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the aid of contrast agents. Contrast agents that are currently in clinical use contain metals, causing some restrictions in their use. Also, these contrast agents are mainly non-specific without any tissue targeting capabilities. Subsequently, the interest has notably increased in the research of organic, metal-free contrast agents. This study presents a new, stable organic radical, TEEPO-Met, where a radical moiety 2,2,6,6-tetraethylpiperidinoxide (TEEPO) is attached to an amino acid, methio…

Preoperative Considerations in Order to Resume Elective Surgery During COVID-19 Pandemic

2020

Abstract The alarming spread of the novel Coronavirus necessitated the cessation of elective therapeutic procedures in most health-care facilities. This strategy has limited the spread of the virus, but with a huge socio-economic impact. For this reason, the resumption of elective surgery in the context of the coronavirus pandemic is a difficult, but necessary process. Addressing this delicate situation requires interdisciplinary collaboration, so as to ensure high quality medical care for all patients, with consideration to protection of the staff involved in the care of the surgical patient.

Urology practice during the COVID-19 vaccination campaign

2021

Introduction: The current scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic is significantly different from that of the first, emergency phase. Several countries in the world are experiencing a second, or even a third, wave of contagion, while awaiting the effects of mass vaccination campaigns. The aim of this report was to provide an update of previously released recommendations on prioritization and restructuring of urological activities. Methods: A large group of Italian urologists directly involved in the reorganization of their urological wards during the first and second phase of the pandemic agreed on a set of updated recommendations for current urology practice. Results: The updated recommendations…

[The impact of COVID-19 on hand surgery: a French retrospective comparative study in COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 hand trauma centers].

2021

Introduction: En 2020, la pandémie a divisé la France en zone COVID-19 et non COVID-19.

Impact of asymptomatic COVID-19 patients in global surgical practice during the COVID-19 pandemic

2020

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has changed the global surgical care. Patients infected with COVID-19 may present without typical symptoms, and such asymptomatic patients may potentially trigger in-hospital outbreaks by transmitting the disease to health care providers and other hospitalized patients. Further, asymptomatic COVID-19 patients have worse postop- erative outcomes with an unexpectedly high morbidity and mortality, reaching 20⋅5 per cent deaths. However, we do not have objective global data on this issue. In an attempt to clarify the current global surgical practice under the COVID-19 pandemic particularly focusing on the preoperative screening of asymptomatic COVID-19 patients, we …

The application of 3d printing in plastic and reconstructive surgery: Case-control study in facial reconstruction

2017

The aim of this study was to explore the efficiency and usefulness of tridimensional printing in plastic and reconstructive surgery for lesions of the maxillofacial region. This was comparison study between two groups of patients. Six patients underwent surgical reconstruction, using a threedimensional model built on the basis of CT scans (group 1); and six patients underwent surgical reconstruction, without the use of a three-dimensional model (group 2). The following variables were evaluated: age, gender, histological diagnosis, cancer location, size of bone lesion, type of reconstruction, complications and surgical timing. A statistically significant difference was found in microsurgical…

Real-time simulation of tissue deformation for the nasal endoscopy simulator (NES).

1999

Endonasal sinus surgery requires a great amount of training before it can be adequately performed. The complicated anatomy involved, the proximity of relevant structures, and the variability of the anatomy due to inborn or iatrogenic variations make several complications possible. Today, cadaver dissections are the "gold standard" for surgical training. To overcome the drawbacks of traditional training methods, the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics is currently developing a highly interactive medical simulation system for nasal endoscopy and endonasal sinus surgery, in cooperation with the Mainz University Hospital. For the simulation of a rhinoscopic procedure, not only are the re…

Aktuelle Entwicklungen und Perspektiven in der Diagnostik und Therapie von Harninkontinenz und Genitalsenkung der Frau

2013

As a key area of gynaecology, urogynaecology has undergone impressive changes in the past few years. Together with the high prevalence of functional pelvic floor disorders, modern anaesthesia procedures and the introduction of new, innovative minimally invasive operation techniques have led to a dramatic increase in the number of operations for incontinence and prolapses. The increasingly subtle diagnostic options, such as, e. g., 2D and 3D sonography of the pelvic floor provide unambiguous findings and facilitate decision making. Tension-free vaginal slings in retro-pubic, trans-obturator or single-incision techniques show a high success rate with few complications and have almost complete…
