Adenocarcinoma of the appendix with extra-appendicular spread: Clinico-surgical and histologic analysis of 27 cases.
2017
Abstract Background and objectives Appendiceal neoplasms with extra-appendiceal spread may show different clinical patterns with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) being one of them. We analyse the results in a series of patients treated in our centre. Material and methods Retrospective study of patients operated on for appendiceal peritoneal carcinomatosis from January 2012 to May 2015. Results Twenty-seven consecutive patients were included. Median age 63 years (26–73); 14 were men. Peritoneal carcinomatosis index = 16 ± 8 (3–31). The suspected preoperative origins were appendix in 23, ovary in 3 and urothelial in one. Postoperative mortality in 2 patients (7.4%). The remaining 36% presented mo…
Metastatic carcinoma of the oral region: An analysis of 21 cases
2017
Background Metastatic carcinoma to the jaws and oral region are very rare, representing less than 1% of all oral tumors. Unfortunately, oral metastasis is usually manifestation of an advanced stage of primary cancer, and indicates widespread disease and poor prognosis. Material and Methods In this retrospective study, a total of 2039 patients with history of oral malignant tumor between 1980 and 2012 at Seoul National University Dental Hospital were evaluated. We analyzed the dental and medical records, and histopathological database of 2039 patients to assess the prevalence of oral metastasis of carcinoma in terms of sex and age, as well as, the most common origin of primary cancer, and pr…
A Passive-Marker-Based Optical System for Computer-Aided Surgery in Otorhinolaryngology: Development and First Clinical Experiences
1999
Objectives: To develop a new type of optical computer-aided surgery (CAS) device that overcomes some of the restrictions of common systems and to examine its accuracy and usability under laboratory and intraoperative conditions. Study Design: Prospective study using laboratory experiments and intraoperative data collection. Methods: An optical CAS system applying passive optical markers for coordinate determination was developed. Laboratory accuracy measurements were obtained on a Plexiglas model with known coordinates of fiducial markers, before and after predefined table movements. Intraoperative accuracy measurements were recorded from 24 patients undergoing endonasal surgery of the para…
An experimental study of the esthetic effect of facial profiles
1998
In this study good-looking "male" and "female" as well as ugly facial profiles were shaped by 104 lay persons using an especially constructed device according to specific instructions. These profiles were photographed and subsequently evaluated using a series of parameters from soft tissue profile analyses. Although some significant mean value differences were found between the good-looking and ugly profile variants, they were not substantial. In contrast, markedly significant differences were revealed between the variances of all variables. In some instances the variance of the ugly profiles was more than 3 to 4 times higher than that of the good-looking profiles. These findings were convi…
Dental implants placed on bone subjected to vertical alveolar distraction show the same performance as those placed on primitive bone
2013
Introduction: Vertical osteogenic alveolar distraction (VOAD) allows for the augmentation of the alveolar ridge for the placement of dental implants in atrophic alveolar ridges. The goal of this paper is to assess long-term peri-implant bone resorption in implants placed on bones subjected to VOAD, comparing it with a group of patients who had implants placed directly on the alveolar bone without previous bone regeneration. Material and Methods: We conducted a follow-up study on 32 patients who were divided into two groups: The Distraction Group (14 patients), and the Distraction-Free Group (18 patients), who received a total of 100 implants. Peri-implant bone loss was measured by means of …
Clinical evaluation of piezoelectric ear surgery
2008
We evaluated the use of piezoelectric surgery (Piezosurgery; Mectron Medical Technology; Carasco, Genoa, Italy) as a means of avoiding some complications of osteotomy and osteoplasty in otologic surgery, particularly in classic canal-wall-up mastoidectomy. Piezoelectric surgery is a recently developed system for cutting bone with microvibrations created by the piezoelectric effect. This effect occurs when an electric current is passed through certain ceramics and crystals, causing them to oscillate at ultrasonic frequencies. Our study population was made up of 20 adults with unilateral chronic otitis media. In all patients, piezoelectric surgery allowed for effective, precise, safe, easy, …
Minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy: four-year experience of a single team in a General Surgery Unit.
2013
Minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT) is a surgical technique that has showed increasingly good results, particularly in endocrine surgery centers. The aim of this prospective, non-randomized study was to evaluate feasibility, advantages and critical aspects of MIVAT in a general surgery unit. Two hundred twenty-four patients underwent total thyroidectomy for benign thyroid disease from May, 2008 to April, 2011. They were divided into two groups: one underwent conventional thyroidectomy (CT), and the other underwent MIVAT. The inclusion criteria were thyroid volume ≤35 mL and main nodule size ≤35 mm. For each patient, socio-demographic variables, hospitalization data and ou…
Anatomic site evaluation of the palatal bone for temporary orthodontic anchorage devices.
2008
: Objectives: The aim of the present study was to assess the micromorphologic characteristics of the palatal bone from an implantologic standpoint. Materials and Methods: The material consisted of tissue blocks of autopsy material from 22 subjects (18 males, three females) between 18 and 63 years of age. The specimens comprised the anterior median palatal region from 5 to 10 mm behind the incisive foramen. They were prepared in the transversal plane according to ground thin-section technology. The midpalatal area as well as an area of 3 mm bilateral to the midline were assessed, and a classification of quantitative palatal bone availability was developed. Results: The findings could be divi…
A comparative study of the pharyngeal airway space, measured with cone beam computed tomography, between patients with different craniofacial morphol…
2014
Abstract Purpose The present study aims to determine any existing association between airway dimensions, measured with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), and the different patient craniofacial morphologies. Material and methods Sixty CBCT (Dental Picasso Master 3D) images, from patients treated at the Orthodontics Master at Valencia University were selected. The program InVivoDental 5.1 was used to visualize sections, analyze three-dimensional images, and perform airway measurements in the three planes of the space. Intra- and interobserver error methods were recorded. After that, measurements at three different levels of the airway (upper, medium, lower) were taken, in both the anteropo…
A histological evaluation of the surgical margins from human oral fibrous-epithelial lesions excised with CO2 laser, Diode laser, Er:YAG laser, Nd:YA…
2018
Background We aim to evaluate the presence of histological artefacts in the surgical margins of human oral fibro-epithelial hyperplasias excised with lasers of different wavelengths, and also electrosurgical scalpel and cold scalpel. Moreover, we aim to determine if some of these instruments could impair the normal histological diagnosis of these lesions. Material and Methods We included 130 consecutive surgical samples of 80 females and 50 males (mean age of 53.82±16.55) with a histological diagnosis of an oral benign fibrous-epithelial hyperplasias. The samples were categorized into 6 groups according to the type of instrument used: CO2 laser group, diode laser group, Er:YAG laser group, …
