UNIVERSAL VARICELLA VACCINATION IN THE SICILIAN PAEDIATRIC POPULATION: RAPID UPTAKE OF THE VACCINATION PROGRAMME AND MORBIDITY TRENDS OVER FIVE YEARS
2009
Following the licensure of the Oka/Merck varicella vaccine in Italy in January 2003, the Sicilian health authorities launched a universal vaccination programme in all nine Local Health Units. A two-cohort vaccination strategy was adopted to minimise the shift of the mean age of varicella occurrence to older age groups, with the goal of vaccinating with one dose at least 80% of children in their second year of life and 50% of susceptible adolescents in their 12th year of life. Two studies were implemented in parallel to closely monitor vaccination coverage as well as varicella incidence. Overall, the programme achieved its target, with 87.5% vaccine coverage for the birth cohort 2005 and 90.…
Surveillance of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacilli in a neonatal intensive care unit: prominent role of cross transmission
2007
Background Multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacilli (MDRGN) are an important cause of nosocomial infections in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). We conducted a 1-year prospective surveillance study in an NICU to assess the epidemiology of MDRGN among newborns and the relative importance of acquisition routes. Methods Neonates admitted at the NICU of the Dipartimento Materno-Infantile, University Hospital, Palermo, Italy, from January 7, 2003, to January 6, 2004, were included in the study. Colonization of patients with MDRGN was assessed by cultures of rectal swabs sampled twice a week. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was used to determine relatedness among MDRGN isolates. Extended-s…
A Hospital-Based and a Population-Based Stroke Registry Yield Different Results: The Experience in Dijon, France
1996
The aim of this study was to demonstrate the different results obtained from a population-based and a hospital-based stroke study in the same city.Between January 1 and December 31, 1993, we collected information on all of the first strokes in the population of the city of Dijon, in conjunction with the Dijon Stroke Registry, collecting the first-ever strokes from patients living in Dijon as well as on all the first strokes in residents and nonresidents of Dijon who were treated at Dijon University Hospital. Demographic details, medical history, vascular risk factors, stroke subtype, as diagnosed by CT scan, and mortality rates were compared between the strokes observed in the population of…
The FAST-MI 2005-2010-2015 registries in the light of the COMPASS trial: The COMPASS criteria applied to a post-MI population.
2019
International audience; Background: The COMPASS trial assessed the impact of adding low dose rivaroxaban to aspirin in selected patients (pts). After an acute myocardial infarction (MI), when dual antiplatelet treatment is no longer needed, patients might be eligible for aspirin/rivaroxaban co-therapy. The characteristics and risks of such a population are unclear. Methods: Data were extracted from the FAST-MI 2005, 2010 and 2015 nationwide French registries. Characteristics and long-term mortality were compared according to COMPASS eligibility and between registry and trial populations. Results: Among 9954 patients alive and free of events at one year, 4402 (44%) were classified as COMPASS-L…
High frequency of colorectal adenoma in patients with duodenal adenoma but without familial adenomatous polyposis
2004
Abstract Background Duodenal adenomas are extremely common in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis. However, it is uncertain whether patients with duodenal adenomas without familial adenomatous polyposis are at greater risk for colorectal neoplasia and, therefore, should routinely undergo surveillance colonoscopy. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between non-papillary duodenal adenoma without familial adenomatous polyposis and colorectal adenoma. Methods Twenty-five patients with non-papillary duodenal adenomas without familial adenomatous polyposis, seen from January 1990 to April 2003, were retrospectively evaluated. Results Non-papillary duode…
Multiple biomarkers and atrial fibrillation in the general population.
2014
BACKGROUND: Different biological pathways have been related to atrial fibrillation (AF). Novel biomarkers capturing inflammation, oxidative stress, and neurohumoral activation have not been investigated comprehensively in AF. METHODS AND RESULTS: In the population-based Gutenberg Health Study (n = 5000), mean age 56 ± 11 years, 51% males, we measured ten biomarkers representing inflammation (C-reactive protein, fibrinogen), cardiac and vascular function (midregional pro adrenomedullin [MR-proADM], midregional pro atrial natriuretic peptide [MR-proANP], N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide [Nt-proBNP], sensitive troponin I ultra [TnI ultra], copeptin, and C-terminal pro endothelin-1), a…
Effectiveness and Tolerability of Fixed-Dose Combination Enalapril plus Nitrendipine in Hypertensive Patients Results of the 3-Month Observational, P…
2009
Background and objective: Monotherapy with any class of antihypertensive drug effectively controls blood pressure (BP) in only about 50% of patients. Consequently, the majority of patients with hypertension require combined therapy with two or more medications. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness (systolic BP [SBP]/diastolic BP [DBP] control) and tolerability of the fixed-dose combination enalapril/nitrendipine 10 mg/20 mg administered as a single daily dose in hypertensive patients. Methods: This was a post-authorization, multicentre, prospective, observational study conducted in primary care with a 3-month follow-up. Patients throughout Spain with uncontrolled hypertension (>= …
Trends in Radical Prostatectomy Risk Group Distribution in a European Multicenter Analysis of 28 572 Patients: Towards Tailored Treatment
2019
Background: Active surveillance (AS) has been increasingly proposed as the preferential initial management strategy for low-risk prostate cancer (PC), while in high-risk PC the indication for surgery has widened. Objective: To evaluate the development of risk group distribution of patients undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP). Design, setting, and participants: Retrospective database review of combined RP databases (2000-2015) of four large European centers (Créteil, Paris; San Rafaele, Milan; Martini Klinik, Hamburg; NKI, AvL, Amsterdam). Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: Clinical and pathological characteristics per year of surgery. Eligibility for AS was defined according …
Moderate influenza vaccine effectiveness against A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, and low effectiveness against A(H3N2) subtype, 2018/19 season in Italy
2019
Background: Influenza vaccines are updated every year to match the vaccine strains with currently circulating viruses; consequently influenza vaccine effectiveness (IVE) has to be assessed annually.Research design and methods: A test-negative case-control study was conducted within the context of the Italian sentinel influenza surveillance network to estimate IVE by age group, virus subtype, and vaccine brand in medically attended laboratory-confirmed influenza. Results: In Italy, the 2018/19 influenza season was characterized by the co-circulation of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) viruses. The adjusted IVE estimate in preventing influenza was moderate (44.8%, 95% CI: 18.8 to 62.5) again…
