The Cities of Tomorrow
2014
In 2007, France took responsibility for the climate and ecological crisis that hit the globe by launching the Grenelle Environnement, endeavouring to take concrete actions to achieve the sustainable development goals. The strategy was developed around six working groups to put forward proposals in these fields: fight against climate change and control of energy use, protection of biodiversity and natural resources, environmental health, sustainability of means of production and consumption trends, building of an “ecological democracy”, research and promotion of sustainable development forms promoting employment and competitiveness. Owing to the urge to take action against the degradation of…
Energy Use in the Building Sector and Climate Change: Modeling, Developments, and Future Trends
2020
Climate change is going to have significant impacts among a wide range of areas and domains, including the building sector, characterized by constructions which may not be designed to be resilient to the evolutions in the warming climate that will occur in the next decades. The chapter investigates methodologies and approaches connected to the assessment of the effects of climate change to the energy use within the building sector. Methodologies are compared and the most relevant future trends expected are traced for the current century.
The applicability of the indicators proposed by the European and national regulatory framework for the verification of the advancement of the plans: …
2014
Indicators are essential operational tools for the preparation of plans, to monitor their progress and for the ex-post verification of the results achieved. As it is known, there is a large corpus of indicators, both at Community and national Italian level, to which designers and planners can refer. However, it remains to verify the effectiveness of general validity parameters in describing the progress of the implementation of plans, which must be necessarily compared with more limited territorial situations. This paper addresses this problem, with reference to the Energy and Environmental Plan of the Sicilian Region (PEARS), comparing the themes proposed at European (Eurostat) and the Ita…
GLI ANTROPOLOGI SOCIOCULTURALI E LA “SOSTENIBILITÀ”. ALCUNE PROSPETTIVE
2023
The chapter proposes a critical discussion of the notions of sustainability and sustainable development. It should be noted that the global and national policies of "sustainable development" implemented in the last thirty years have failed to stop the worsening of the planetary crisis and of climate change of anthropogenic origin at the planetary level. We then go over some of the main lines of reflection and analysis on these issues within socio-cultural anthropology

Smart Buildings for a Sustainable Development
2014
The use of sustainable technologies for buildings, with the goal of creating an environment for living and working that uses fewer resources and generates less waste, also aims to retrofit existing buildings to be more efficient in terms of energy and water. Many cities are following this way targeting both commercial and municipal buildings. These cities are called smart cities, that are places where all life processes and nerve centres of social life are read, thanks to the use of technology, in order to radically improve quality of life, opportunity, prosperity, social and economic development. This paper deals with the study of smart buildings within smart cities, namely the use in an i…
The instability of the adjusted and unadjusted environmental Kuznets curves
2006
We test the stability of the unadjusted and adjusted environmental Kuznets curves (EKCs). Our results provide evidence in favour of a theoretically funded "adjusted EKC hypothesis" in which the impact of per capita GDP on CO2 emissions is evaluated conditionally to the effects of the industry mix and of the energy-supply infrastructure. In this specification, the shape of the GDP-CO2 relationship appears quite sensitive to changes in the estimation period. In the final part of the paper, signs and dynamics of fixed effects of individual countries in different specifications are interpreted as measures of virtuous or vicious of environmental behaviour. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Education for Sustainable Development: A University Perspective
2021
Universities have a number of functions in developing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD): conducting study/teaching process themselves, participation in the development of study materials for other fields of studies, involvement in the development of study methods, as well as a responsibility for Sustainable Development Science. An equally important role of universities in the ESD process is the “training of trainers”—preparation of new teachers, who are aware of the need to promote the sustainable development process, are equipped with a systemic understanding of processes in the society and natural world, and know the local culture and traditions. The Aichi-Nagoya Declaration on …
Territorial Governance, E-Government and Sustainable Development Policy: A System Dynamics Approach
2013
Part 1: Research Foundations; International audience; The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how system dynamics modelling can be used in e-government policy and systems as an aid to spport territorial ananlysis, planning and governance, sustainable performance in urban areas and the assessment of policy outcomes. Topics such as renewable energy, efficiency, the design and exploitation of urban energy, water and waste management infrastructure and the alignment of different stakeholders provide relevant fields of study for the analysis of this paper. Specifically, we reflect upon the way in which a preliminary dynamic performance management model of an exemplary case study can be used to …
Continuous Professional Training and the Situation of Labour Market in Romania
2013
Abstract This study is part of a wider research carried out in recent years, in North-East Moldova – important socio-economic region of Romania – ancient Romanian culture and civilization hearth. It addresses issues of human capital development in the context of sustainable development of the City Suceava and Botosani. This study addresses the issue of human resource development, focusing on continuous training and employment. It is known that the development is based on the human resource, so there must be local responsabilities in terms of skilled labour and increase the adaptability of environamental changes. The results obtained from the research will reflect some of the practical steps…
