2017

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease still represents the leading cause of death in western countries. A wealth of scientific evidence demonstrates that increased blood cholesterol levels have a major impact on the outbreak and progression of atherosclerotic plaques. Moreover, several cholesterol-lowering pharmacological agents, including statins and ezetimibe, have proven effective in improving clinical outcomes. This document is focused on the clinical management of hypercholesterolemia and has been conceived by 16 Italian medical associations with the support of the Italian National Institute of Health. The authors have considered with particular attention the role of hypercholesterole…

Assessment of the possibility of implementing small retention reservoirs in terms of the need to increase water resources

2021

Organic food consumption: The relevance of the health attribute

2020

During the last decades, organic food products have become the main sustainable alternative to conventional food consumption. Among the several organic food attributes that consumers recognize in organic food, healthiness has been reported as the primary motivation to buy products certified as organic. The objective of the current study is to assess the relative weight of the health attribute among other recognized organic food attributes. To achieve this aim, a multiple price list (MPL) methodology is adopted to elicit consumers&rsquo

Attributions and paradoxes of agency in socially sustainable development : perspectives from small-scale NGOs in Jinja, Uganda

2014

During the past decades, sustainable development has become an important phenomenon in the global development discourse. The concept has been widely used by both large international bodies such as the United Nations as well as small grassroots organization. In the beginning, the interest was mainly in questions of environmental and ecological aspects of the concept but especially since the introduction of the Human Development Approach the importance of social and cultural aspects of sustainable development became more important. In the discussions on Human Development and sustainable development, the people are in the center of the discussion. Both concepts emphasize the importance of agen…

ANALYSIS OF THE TRADITIONAL PASSIVE SYSTEMS PERFORMANCE THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF CFD SOFTWARE

2012

The need to reduce energy consumption is pushing the building design research to the evaluation of passive conditioning systems, since urban buildings are one of the major energy dissipater resulting in emission of CO2. This approach is not modern, but it is historically rooted in the architectural culture of the Mediterranean area and in the Middle East. The passive systems have ancient origins: they were developed to mitigate the summer heat and the winter cold. To understand the reasons that led to the development of passive systems, it should be remembered that about One-Fifth of the emerged planet surface and One-Third of the world's population live in conditions of warm-dry or hot-hum…

Proteins in Ionic Liquids: Reactions, Applications, and Futures

2019

Biopolymer processing and handling is greatly facilitated by the use of ionic liquids, given the increased solubility, and in some cases, structural stability imparted to these molecules. Focussing on proteins, we highlight here not just the key drivers behind protein-ionic liquid interactions that facilitate these functionalities, but address relevant current and potential applications of protein-ionic liquid interactions, including areas of future interest.

Building renovation, sustainability and urban regeneration

2015

The paper investigates issues related to the principles of eco-sustainability and criteria of de-sign choice to be made in respect to the characteristics of the interventions. It proposes cases of recovery and re-use sustainable in Sicily, whose choices of action were made in respect of the environment and local traditions. General directives: reduction of the energy consump-tion; use of recycled and recyclable materials;improvement of the thermo/igrometric. The programming is based not only on the control of the performance, but on an idea of global quality of the operations. The correspondence between the needs and the requirements of the organism and the norms that protect the user, it’s…

The circular economy for resilience of the agricultural landscape and promotion of the sustainable agriculture and food systems

2022

The agricultural landscape is a public good to be preserved for long-term socio-economic and environmental effects. The agricultural landscape is preserved by the carrying out of agricultural activities. Through a empirical survey we examined how some young farmers in the countryside adopt conservation and resilience strategies. A common feature of the case studies examined is the adoption of photovoltaic energy production necessary for the performance of business activities. The method applied is that of the opportunity cost. The results of the research show that young farmers after graduation have returned to agriculture as they have an advantage in terms of opportunity costs compared to …

From Scarcity to Abundance : Food Waste Themes and Virtues in Agrarian and Mature Consumer Society

2019

Uusitalo and Takala address the food waste problem as a societal phenomenon and examine ethical virtues, values linked to them and food practices in two different time periods: agrarian society (1885–1917) and mature consumer society (2008–2017), in Finland. They use data from newspapers to uncover how ethical principles can underpin understanding of the food waste phenomenon. The study shows how the virtues adopted by food chain actors guide their practices towards sustainable ways of handling excess food. While societal themes of food waste are changing, virtues and food practices are changing as well, but some deep-rooted societal virtues and values persist. The chapter concludes with re…
