Assessing Field and Laboratory Calibration Protocols for the Diviner 2000 Probe in a Range of Soils with Different Textures
2016
Frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) downhole sensors have been increasingly used for soil moisture field monitoring because they allow measurement, even continuously, along a soil profile. Moreover, they can also be installed with minimal soil disturbance around the access tube. The objectives of the paper were to assess the field and laboratory calibration protocols for a FDR capacitance probe (Diviner 2000) for a range of soils characterized by different particle size distributions and shrink/swell potential and to propose a practical and effective protocol on the basis of undisturbed soil samples, accounting for soil shrinkage/swelling processes characterizing swelling clay soils. The e…
Photoelastic stress analysis assisted evaluation of fracture toughness in hydrothermally aged epoxies
2014
The present work has investigated the fracture toughness of a model DGEBA epoxy system subject to Hidro-Thermal aging. A Photoelastic Stress Analysis technique has been implemented, showing the evolution of stresses arising throughout the water uptake process due to the non-uniform swelling of the material. Gravimetric and Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analyses have further complemented the characterization, showing the onset of plasticization effects with aging. The correlation of all previous characterizations has allowed to conclude that an increase of KIC fracture toughness is obtained at the fully saturated condition. In particular Photoelasticity has also revealed the onset of relevant s…
Spreading Depression Induces Permanent Cell Swelling Under Penumbra Conditions
2000
Background. Spreading depression (SD) is known to go along with temporary breakdown of ion gradients and cell swelling which spontaneously normalizes. Here, the effects of SD at reduced flow conditions as encountered in the ischemic penumbra are examined.
Bilateral jaws involvement of Burkitt?s lymphoma in a pediatric patient
2021
A case of Burkitt’s lymphoma with bilateral jaws involvement in a 5-year-old boy is reported discussing the dentist’s role in the diagnosis and management of this disease. The initial clinical diagnosis established of maxillary swelling causing trismus was a dentoalveolar abscess. The incisional biopsy was performed and histopathological analysis, including immunohistochemistry, confirmed the Burkitt’s lymphoma. The patient underwent treatment and remains free of the disease for 36 months of follow-up. The occurrence of intraoral bilateral jaws involvement of Burkitt’s lymphoma in child is unusual and its accurate diagnosis avoids complications in the patient’s treatment. Key words:Burkitt’…
Objective measures of nasal function
1995
Numerous techniques to objectively measure nasal function are available to the rhinologic surgeon. Rhinomanometry, acoustic rhinometry, laser Doppler flowmetry, saccharin transport time, determination of ciliary beat frequency, and olfactory and trigeminal event-related potentials are all techniques in current use. Rhinomanometry is the standard clinical tool used to indicate those patients complaining of nasal obstruction who are likely to benefit from septal and turbinate surgery. Acoustic rhinometry permits the precise localization of nasal stenoses and is the best predictor of a patient's postoperative satisfaction. It is, in addition, more sensitive than rhinomanometry in recording cha…

An Unusual Oral Swelling
2014
A 7-year-old female was admitted for worsening swelling under her tongue associated with fever and difficulty swallowing. She had sustained head and neck bicycle handlebar trauma 2 weeks before the admission. She was noted to have a cystic and ballotable mass appearing in the floor of mouth. The lesion was evaluated by an otorhinolaryngologist who aspirated 15 mL of mucoid- appearing fluid, which led to collapse of the floor of mouth swelling and alleviation of dysphagia. The patient was placed on a clear liquid diet, which was advanced to a regular diet over 3 days and completed a 10-day course of clindamycin. Neck magnetic resonance imaging revealed persistence of a single cystic mass of …
Bilateral cyclic cheek lesions related to premenstrual syndrome: a multifactorial pathogenesis?
2009
Introduction Cheek biting is a chronic, usually innocuous, self-inXicted injury that often occurs as a parafunctional habit. Case report We report an unusual case of bilateral cyclic cheek lesions in a 34-year-old woman characterized by hyperkeratinization near the biting edges of the teeth and hematic lesions accompanied by a cheek swelling sensation, without pain and burning. The lesions coincided with a premenstrual syndrome, characterized by Xuid retention Introduction Cheek biting is a chronic, usually innocuous, self-inXicted injury that often occurs as a parafunctional habit. Case report We report an unusual case of bilateral cyclic cheek lesions in a 34-year-old woman characterized …
Optimal application of compressive palatal stents following mesiodens removal in pediatric patients:a Randomized Controlled Trial
2021
Background There is no scientific evidence supporting the choice of a palatal stent in patients who underwent removal of an impacted supernumerary tooth. We aimed to investigate the effects of palatal stents in patients who underwent supernumerary tooth removal through a palatal approach and to suggest the optimal stent thickness and material. Material and Methods We recruited 144 patients who underwent extraction of a supernumerary tooth between the maxillary anterior teeth. Subjects were assigned to a control group (CG) or one of four compressive palatal stent groups (CPSGs) classified by the thickness and material of the thermoplastic acrylic stent used. Palatal gingival swelling and obj…
