DC4CD

2017

In this article, we present Distributed Computing for Constrained Devices (DC4CD), a novel software architecture that supports symbolic distributed computing on wireless sensor networks. DC4CD integrates the functionalities of a high-level symbolic interpreter, a compiler, and an operating system, and includes networking abstractions to exchange high-level symbolic code among peer devices. Contrarily to other architectures proposed in the literature, DC4CD allows for changes at runtime, even on deployed nodes of both application and system code. Experimental results show that DC4CD is more efficient in terms of memory usage than existing architectures, with which it also compares well in te…

Development of an IoT Environmental Monitoring Application with a Novel Middleware for Resource Constrained Devices

2014

In this paper the development of a Mobile Health monitoring system is described. The system combines user location data with air quality information provided by a heterogeneous sensing infrastructure providing users with advises about their daily exposure to air pollutants. The highly dynamic integration of different kind of nodes, mostly characterized by rather constrained resources, of this application is crucial to implement the Internet of Things vision, and requires powerful and effective programming methodologies to abstract implementation of high-level distributed processing from hardware dependencies. We then describe our programming methodology and our novel middleware supporting d…

Within the symbolic world of the prehistoric hunters: A GIS-based and 3D model analysis of sites with complexes of linear incisions in western Sicily

2021

Abstract The prehistoric peopling of Sicily has left scattered traces of symbolic activities through well-known rock art expressions in caves and rock shelters located all around the island (among the most significant, the sites of Addaura, Racchio and Genovese). A peculiar phenomenon is the incision of linear signs, often grouped on the same rocky walls, hidden in fissures or placed at the entrance of the underground chambers of caves. In this report, we investigate a sample of these graphic expressions from a spatial and technical point of view. A GIS-based approach presents the territorial pattern providing insight, on a macroscale, into the intentional positioning of the sign complexes.…

2010

Language acquired great importance in ancient diplomacy. The success or failure of a diplomatic mission depended greatly upon the ambassador’s skills of persuasion, a product of the efficacy of his words and their suitability to his audience. The ambassador had to be able to choose the most appropriate words to reach the objectives of his mission. The measure of his competence was his capacity to recognize the position of his listener, without undervaluing ideas, preconceptions, and potential reactions. Nevertheless, in certain cases, an ambassador’s ethnographic knowledge of the context where he had to operate determined the successful outcome of a mission. Such knowledge manifested itself…

The Eighteenth-century Opera and the Search for a Meeting Point between Music and Declamation

2019

The article is the result of some researches about the ideas on the operatic reform appeared in Italy and France from 1740s onwards. On the basis of acting, some treatises written by actors, philosophers and musicographers claim the dramatic superiority of recitativo secco or obbligato, and the beauty of aria parlante. (e.g., L. Riccoboni, Dell’arte rappresentativa, 1728, G. Manfredi, L’attore in scena, 1734, G. R. Carli, L’indole del teatro tragico, 1746, and Osservazioni sulla musica antica e moderna, 1744-1786, G. Tartini, Trattato di musica secondo la vera scienza dell’armonia, 1754, F. Algarotti, Saggio sopra l’opera in musica, 1755). Owing to its particular speaking tone linked to dec…

Il tarantismo in Sicilia

2017

Settore L-ART/08 - EtnomusicologiaThe text examines published and unpublished materials – such as historical and ethnographic sources archive records and musical documents – which testify the presence of tarantism in Sicily from mid-17th century to the end of the 19th. The Sicilian case is then considered in a wider context of contributions on the theme starting from the ‘classic’ De Martino’work up to the debate on the interpretation of the phenomenon between the poles of exorcism and possession chiefly rased by French ethnomusicologist Gilbert Rouget. The analyses is therefore expanded to the tradition of snakes bites healers (the ciaràuli) which shares with tarantism the spider symbolism and to certain kinds of religious processions characterised by frantic ‘dances’ which suggest elements of functional continuity with tarantism musical-choreutic therapy.

2020

The folkloric traditions related to Saint Lucia of Syracuse are characterized, in Sicily as well as elsewhere in Italy, by a peculiar mythical-ritual symbolism. The eyes, fire, wheat are the main elements. The Saint is invoked to solve the problems of sight and all ophthalmic pathologies (both in a cult context and in a magical-medical one) and as such she is the recipient of ex voto objects and the protagonist of prayers and spells. On the eve of her dies natalis, bonfires are lit and processions of torches take place; for her festival, celebrated in some centers with solemn functions and processions, foods based on wheat seeds, sometimes added with other legumes, are widely prepared. This…

Continuità, risorgenze, invenzioni? Sui simboli “preistorici” nel folklore contemporaneo

2015

2017

In 1945, writing about the procession of Our Lady of Viggiano, Carlo Levi presents us a peasant world characterized by archaic beliefs and ritual practices, another world « where seasons run on peasant fatigue, [...] like three thousand years before Christ », a world « veiled with black veils, fiery and earthly [...] which you do not enter without a key of magic ». If that other world of the peasants seems to have come to an end today, the beliefs, practices and ritual symbols of reputed “pre-Christian” precedence or in any case alien to the official liturgy, as witnessed by Levi and many other narrators and demoanthropologists from the 19th and 20th century are not, however, definitively l…

Settore M-GGR/02 - Geografia Economico-PoliticaThe current debate about the Italian territorial reorganization makes again fundamental the concept of «territory». This paper aims to reflect on some important dynamics that concern the idea of territory. More in particular I explore in which form it can be (re)semantised through some tourism representations and narrations able to create specific ways of interaction. By taking into account the case study of the Lonely Planet 2017 digital tourist guidebook dedicated to Sicily that splits (and reorganizes) the island in smaller «regions» it is possible to reflect on a complex space dynamic able to redefine the same idea of territory. Indeed the tourist guidebook uses both texts and geographical maps to propose an anthology of homogeneous and coherent destinations to make the Otherness more accessible for the readers. This process demonstrates how symbolic (re)productions of a territory can give rise to specific constructions of places creating different concepts of region and therefore performative spaces and opportunities of «agency». In other terms the (re)definition of the Sicilian territory proposed by the guide invites tourists to consider a new (narrated) geography invites and invites to interact with it thinking as visitors. From a geographical and cultural point of view reflection on these dynamics allows us to consider some (re)definitions of space in relation to forms of textualization (even on the maps). An imaginary but performative geography that attributes to the concept of territory epistemological and gnoseological possibilities.Settore M-GGR/01 - Geografia
