Get some respect – buy organic foods! When everyday consumer choices serve as prosocial status signaling
2020
Status considerations have recently been linked to prosocial behaviors. This research shows that even everyday consumer behaviors such as favoring organic foods serve as prosocial status signaling. Key ideas from the continuum model of consumer impression formation and the theories of costly signaling and symbolic consumption are synthetized to make sense of this phenomenon. Two web-surveys (Ns = 187, 259) and a field study (N = 336) following experimental designs are conducted. This approach allows the analysis of both the more and less conscious reactions of consumers. Study 1 shows that the image of consumers favoring organic product versions is marked by characteristics consistent with …
Birth cohort differences in cognitive performance in 75- and 80-year-olds: a comparison of two cohorts over 28 years.
2021
Abstract Objective To evaluate cohort differences in cognitive performance in older men and women born and assessed 28 years apart. Methods Data in this study were drawn from two age-homogeneous cohorts measured in the same laboratory using the same standardized cognitive performance tests. Participants in the first cohort were born in 1910 and 1914 and assessed in 1989–1990 (Evergreen project, n = 500). Participants in the second cohort were born in 1938 or 1939 and 1942 or 1943 and assessed in 2017–2018 (Evergreen II, n = 726). Participants in both cohorts were assessed at age 75 and 80 years and were recruited from the population register. Cognitive performance was measured using the Dig…
Symbolic function explored in children with epilepsy and headache.
2007
Introduzione.
The development and predictive relations of play and language across the second year
1999
The play and language development of 171 toddlers was examined at 14 and 18 months by observing their activities on the Symbolic Play Test and by assessing their language skills using the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories (MCDI) and the Reynell Developmental Language Scales. Additionally, data from the Bayley Scales of Infant Development and the MCDI were obtained at 24 months, in order to investigate how play and language measures taken at 14 and 18 months predict children's development at the age of 2 years. The results showed that the vocabulary production and symbolic play of the 14-month-old toddlers made a unique contribution to their language and cognitive skills at the…
Maturational effects on newborn ERPs measured in the mismatch negativity paradigm.
2003
Abstract The mismatch negativity (MMN) component of event-related potentials (ERPs), a measure of passive change detection, is suggested to develop early in comparison to other ERP components, and an MMN-like response has been measured even from preterm infants. The MMN response in adults is negative in polarity at about 150–200 ms. However, the response measured in a typical MMN paradigm can also be markedly different in newborns, even opposite in polarity. This has been suggested to be related to maturational factors. To verify that suggestion, we measured ERPs of 21 newborns during quiet sleep to rarely occurring deviant tones of 1100 Hz (probability 12%) embedded among repeated standard…
The Use of and Commitment to Goods
2004
In social theory, goods have usually not been included in the social world. However, in the sociology of consumption, they have been seen as mediating social relations and offering opportunities to make social distinctions. It is precisely the symbolic aspect of goods that makes this possible. In helping to make these distinctions, goods are only given a passive role in our lives. They only get to function as markers of social differences, tastes, and so on. However, the use value of goods cannot be reduced to their symbolic aspect. Generally speaking, the use value also has two other aspects which I will call the ‘functionality’ and ‘productivity’ of goods. I am going to argue that becaus…
Museoparks and re‐enchantment of the museum visits: an approach centred on visual ethnology
2012
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify the structural dimensions of a new museal offer, museoparks, which use edutainment and more generally re‐enchantment strategies.Design/methodology/approachTo bring out the symbolic dimensions specific to these cultural sites, the methodology used is based on the analysis of photographic media.FindingsThe analysis reveals four main symbolic dimensions structuring these hybrid cultural offers: spectacularization, immersive character, ritualized character, and very intense merchandizing of the experience.Research limitations/implicationsThis analysis allows us to update a hybrid, complex and re‐sized form of cultural experience that goes beyond t…
Historischer Überblick zur mathematischen Theorie von Unstetigkeitswellen seit Riemann und Christoffel
1981
We give a brief historical account of the development of the mathematical theory of propagation of discontinuities in gases, fluids or elastic materials. The theory was initiated by Riemann who investigated the propagation of shocks in one-dimensional isentropic gas flow. Riemann’s results were used by Christoffel to treat, more generally, the propagation of (first order) discontinuity surfaces in three-dimensional flows of perfect fluids. Subsequently Christoffel applied his general theory to first order waves in certain elastic materials. Independently of Riemann and Christoffel significant contributions were made by Hugoniot. The theory was completed in Hadamard’s celebrated monograph [3…
