Continental-scale patterns of pathogen prevalence: a case study on the corncrake

Pathogen infections can represent a substantial threat to wild populations, especially those already limited in size. To determine how much variation in the pathogens observed among fragmented populations is caused by ecological factors, one needs to examine systems where host genetic diversity is consistent among the populations, thus controlling for any potentially confounding genetic effects. Here, we report geographic variation in haemosporidian infection among European populations of corncrake. Anthropological investigation of a Kurdish village population from south-eastern Turkey. II. Internal differentiation of morphological features

A small scale village society from southern Turkey has been investigated by demographic, social and anthropological criteria. An internal differentiation of the population on the basis of demographic and social data could be verified for morphological features, too. This is shown clearly by a differentiation of the population into two family complexes. The consequences for the interpretation of metrical random sample surveys in typological investigations are discussed.

Analysis of gene flow and habitat patch network for Chazara briseis (Lepidoptera: Satyridae) in an agricultural landscape

Abstract A fine geographic-scale population genetic structure analysis was performed for the endangered butterfly species Chazara briseis in the region of Halle an der Saale, Germany, for the investigation of gene flow and possible effects of habitat fragmentation on genetic variability. Patterns of genetic variance were estimated by allozyme electrophoresis and quantified with F -statistics. Changing female spacing behaviour and demography in an enclosed breeding population of Clethrionomys glareolus

The social organization of Clethrionomys glareolus Schreber was studied by live trapping in an enclosure of 0.8 ha in Central Finland between the years 1982–1986. The enclosure consisted of three habitats: abandoned field, brushwood, and moist spruce heath forest. The population density increased from 50 voles ha−1 in 1982 and 1983 to 150 ha−1 in 1984 and 1985. In the summer of 1986 the population crashed to almost zero. Hieracium barrelieri, a new hawkweed species from S Italy, with notes on Tenore’s Hieracium murorum var. barrelieri (Asteraceae)

A new species from Montevergine in Campania, Hieracium barrelieri, is described in detail. It is closest to H. acanthodontoides of H. sect. Acanthodontoidea. H. murorum var. barrelieri, an obsolete taxon described by Tenore, is also discussed, as it was partly based on the same population.

Anthropological investigation of a Kurdish village population from south-eastern Turkey. I. Regional comparison of morphological features

The paper is dealing with an anthropological investigation of a Kurdish village population from southern Turkey. We especially attached importance on the complete registration of all inhabitants to get a reliable sample for regional comparison of morphological features. Anthropological data of other Kurdish population groups are used for univariate and multivariate analysis. The resulting clusters are discussed beside the question of representation under the standpoint of regional and cultural origin of the samples.
