Student teachers and their identity construction and awareness of multilingualism: re-visiting three studies
2019
[EN] This article re-visits three studies that originally focused on beliefs about second language (L2) learning and teaching held by student teachers. The studies have been conducted in the same educational context (that is, at a Finnish university). The participants in the studies are majors or minors in English, Swedish, German, etc., and they range from first-year students to fifth-year students about to graduate as qualified L2 teachers. Data have been collected by a variety of means over the past few years (questionnaires, sentence-completion tasks, drawings), and partly longitudinally. The pools of data (verbal and visual) will be re-analysed from the perspective of identity construc…
Lärarnas uppfattningar av att inleda undervisningen i A1-språk i årskurs 1
2022
Since 2020, the teaching of the A1 language starts in grade 1. In order to study the shift to an earlier start to the teaching of the A1 language, a survey of the teaching of A1 languages in grade 1 was carried out with the focus on the most common A1 languages: Finnish in the Swedish-medium schools and English in the Finnish-medium schools. The article examines the teachers’ perceptions of starting the teaching of A1 languages in grade 1. The data consists of 644 answers to an online questionnaire, of which 94 apply to A1 Finnish and 550 to A1 English. The results show that the teachers generally have a positive perception of early language teaching and consider starting the language in gr…

English teaching in Finnish upper secondary schools : students' and teachers' perceptions
2014
Englannin opetus on käynyt läpi monia muutoksia ajan kuluessa. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää millaista englannin opetus nykyään on suomalaisissa lukioissa. Erityisesti tutkimus pyrkii saamaan selville, käytetäänkö tunneilla enemmän perinteisiä vai innovatiivisia opetusmenetelmiä. Perinteisillä opetusmenetelmillä tarkoiteta…
Hybridization between Media Education and Visual Arts Education. Miyazaki's Cinema as a Revulsive

Language teacher identities as socio-politically situated construction : Finnish and Brazilian student teachers’ visualisations of their professional…
2021
The process of envisioning the future is central to teachers’ identity construction, but different environments create distinct sociocultural conditions for the process. This qualitative study drawing on visual-textual methods compares Finnish and Brazilian student teachers’ desired and feared professional futures. Two different perspectives on future identities were detected: a desire for status and a desire for meaningfulness. The results revealed the radically different social status of teaching in the two countries and the role this played in the envisioned identities. The study highlights the importance of awareness of the socio-political nature of identity construction in developing t…
Analysis of corrective feedback in a multilingual classroom context from a CLIL perspective.
2017
The educational paradigm shift—a phenomenographic study of medical teachers’ experiences of practices
2023
Abstract Background This paper proposes a novel approach to the development of competence-oriented higher education, a national transformation aimed at harmonising and digitising undergraduate medical and dental education in Finland. Methods We apply phenomenography as a viable qualitative method for medical education research. To better understand medical teachers’ expectations towards the change in the educational paradigm, we need to study teachers’ experiences of the current practices in undergraduate medical and dental education. The phenomenographic approach facilitates solid links between research, educational development, and change. Results The phenomenographic study maps the quali…
The Analysis of teachinpractices at school and at university
2011
It is well-known that teachers are required to have an experimental mentality leading them to constantly verify the educational efficiency of their teaching actions and make new hypotheses to improve. Actually, what really happens at school is that intuition is predominant because of the lack of time, so these hypotheses are quite dim, working procedures are the fruit of almost indefinite improvisation, and assessment does not fit the need for observing the benefits and results of learning or it is not even carried out at all. Therefore, it is required for school teachers to have a strong methodological competence in the field of teaching research. The Research Group at the University of Pa…
