Nonlinear black-box models for short-term forecasting of air temperature in the town of Palermo
2011
Weather data are crucial to correctly design buildings and their heating and cooling systems and to assess their energy performances. In the intensely urbanized towns the effect of climatic parameters is further emphasized by the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon, known as the increase in the air temperature of urban areas, compared to the one measured in the extra-urban areas. The analysis of the heat island needs detailed local climate data which can be collected only by a dedicated weather monitoring system. The Department of Energy and Environmental Researches of the University of Palermo (Italy) has built up a weather monitoring system that works 24 hours per day and makes data availa…
Simulation with a Torque Dynamometer of Pollutants Emission from Vehicles Near Urban Cross-Road
2002
Nowadays, the influence of the vehicular traffic on the degradation of urban atmosphere is focused on by researchers belonging to different fields in view of its prime importance for public health. The control of exhaust gases emission is primary in order to keep air pollution below the specified limits of the laws in force. In previous works the “medium car” characterises a country in modelling a pollutant in urban areas. This is the central parameter of a forecasting model proposed by Pignato and LoMastro, of pollutant concentration near urban cross-road with traffic lights in continue queue and platoon flow. The proofs have been carried on two classes of displacement vehicles and four cl…
Ventilation Problems in Heritage Buildings
2007
The control of indoor conditions in heritage buildings, such as castles or museums, is of paramount importance for the proper preservation of the artworks kept in. As heritage buildings are often not equipped with HVAC systems, it is necessary to provide proper interventions and measures with the aim of monitoring and controlling indoor physical parameters. Moreover, another requirement should be achieved in such buildings, that is the maintenance of the safety conditions in presence of visiting people. This work reports the results of a survey carried on a hall of a historical palace, aimed to assess an useful correlation between CO2 concentration and occupancy levels.
Pannelli traslucidi preassemblati “a secco” e precompressi realizzati con vetromattoni “modificati”
2011
Novel techniques for wind speed spatial estimation

Estimation of wind velocity over a complex terrain using the Generalized Mapping Regressor
2010
Abstract Wind energy evaluation is an important goal in the conversion of energy systems to more environmentally friendly solutions. In this paper, we present a novel approach to wind speed spatial estimation on the isle of Sicily (Italy): an incremental self-organizing neural network (Generalized Mapping Regressor – GMR) is coupled with exploratory data analysis techniques in order to obtain a map of the spatial distribution of the average wind speed over the entire region. First, the topographic surface of the island was modelled using two different neural techniques and by exploiting the information extracted from a digital elevation model of the region. Then, GMR was used for automatic …
Upside-down ship’s kel-shaped vaults as a contemporary design criteria. The case of the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza in Guimarães (Portugal)
2015
A contemporary worldwide trend is exposing the structural elements of a building to create an articulate and complex architecture whose lines of force give robustness, stability and, at the same time, a sort of lightness and frivolity to the entire construction. However, the combination between the visual conception of architecture and the principles of statics is not new to the world of construction. Exposed structure as a design approach may be observed in many historical buildings, either public, religious or private, and in several cultural and geographical areas where exposed structures communicate power, solidity, and rigour along with an instance of economy and lightness. In this wor…
Wooden domes, vaulted and flat ceilings, partition walls in the Sicilian constructive tradition knowledge for the safeguard of architecture abd techn…
2014
The domes, vaulted and flat ceilings and also the partition walls built with wood and reeds had a particular diffusion from the XVII century, in Palermo as well as in other countries of Sicily, in many regions of Italy and in the whole Europe. The consolidated constructive tradition made them one of the most appreciated and usual systems for structural frame and for the definition of interior rooms, employed both for the monumental housebuilding and for that of minor importance, also owing to the adoption of economic materials. These wooden structures in the monumental architecture contain the rich pictorial and stucco decoration and define - together with other aspects of quality - the aul…
Photocatalytic nano-composite architectural lime mortar for degradation of urban pollutants under solar and visible (interior) light
2017
Abstract Recent advances in nano-technology and nano-additives can give enhanced properties to natural hydraulic lime (NHL), creating a multifunctional material. We have prepared a novel nanocomposite, made of a commercial mortar with 1 wt% and 5 wt% added titania nanoparticles (NPs). These TiO 2 NPs are themselves doped with 1 mol% silver, to give the material enhanced photocatalytic and antimicrobial properties. The Ag-doped TiO 2 NPs were made from a simple, costs effective, aqueous green nanosynthesis process, and the end material only contains 0.01–0.05% Ag. As this mortar is intended to both combat atmospheric pollution, and create more durable/lower maintenance building facades (plas…
