This article presents observations and analyses of all kinds on what the APER Project has produced in terms of laser scanner surveys and digital aids.
Le Domus di Piazza della Vittoria a Palermo
2012
Urban archaelogy is an important source of information in order to learn about the history and the culture of a town. The city of Palermo is a great example of a highly stratified area which is characterized by a complex urban and architectonic palimpsest. Promoting the knowledge, the conservation and the enhancement of its historical and archaeological urban sites is, therefore, central to rebuild the diachronic and diatopic dimension of the past, through the use of cognitive means and technical competences. This is the author's aim of the study.

A novel approach to prevent graphene oxide re-aggregation during the melt compounding with polymers
2015
Abstract The technology for the preparation of polymer-GO nanocomposites was investigated by studying the structure-properties relationships of two different systems, based on PA6 and EVA, fabricated by using different preparation methods, i.e. melt mixing, wet phase inversion, and the combination of the two. The morphology of nanocomposites resulted dramatically influenced by the technique adopted and showed to be the critical variable affecting the physical properties of the materials. Finally, the mechanical and dynamic-mechanical of the nanocomposites were improved by using the hybrid technique combining the two procedures.
E-Learning Experiences in La Ribera Health Department
2014
This paper shows how the training of health professionals is improving thanks to the use of new technologies, in particular e-learning. This type of technology is widely used in medical education and there are multiple research works that report its effective deployment by health professionals and students. However, there is a need to incorporate e-learning platforms and online methods in healthcare organizations through a systematic and rigorous approach what is proposed in the current work. This approach has been applied since 2009 in the context of La Ribera Health Department implementing a high number of e-learning experiences. The obtained outcomes reveal how useful have been these exp…
METHODOLOGIES FOR THE ENHANCEMENT AND THE PRESERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE: THE CRITERIA TO DOCUMENTATION, DIFFUSION AND PREVENTION MEASURES
2014
Recovering our building heritage has a fundamental role regarding renewal process, since it constitutes one of the strategies for urban and territorial balance. The project of building recovery, therefore, mainly addresses the adjustment to new housing and urban needs, but it is obviously conditioned and/or “restricted” by the limitation of the building itself, in particular when the intrinsic characteristics must be preserved. The concept of “restriction” extends to its relation with the site, to the quality of the image, to the living conditions. Therefore any intervention of building recovery needs a philological study as a starting point, which consists of a critical interpretation of t…
Materials for sustainable architecture in the Mediterranean region
2016
There has been recent increased use of earth for construction of buildings in developed countries, largely because of concerns with the environmental impact and embodied carbon from fired bricks and cement based products. Of all forms of earth construction, the widest impact on modern construction is likely to come from commercially produced unfired earth masonry where large scale production can significantly reduce costs. The use of traditional materials in the Mediterranean area needs to be reassessed with a thought given to environmental sustainability, but also with an eye to the reappropriation of the predominantly massive nature of Mediterranean architecture. This article contemplates…
Architettura contemporanea in terra cruda
2010
It is estimated that between a third and a half of the world's population, approximately three billion people on six continents, lives in building constructed of earth. Earth building are commonly perceived to be used only by the poor or found only in developing countries, but there are earth buildings of almost every architectural type in use by every economic and social class in both the industrialized and non-industrialized worlds.
Earth Construction: The Mechanical Properties of Adobe with the Addition of Laponite
2015
The contribution describes testing of compression strength, flexural strength and abrasion resistance of adobe made up of soil, water and sand (AS), soil, water, sand and straw (ASP), soil, water, sand and laponite nanoparticles (ASN). Embodied energy in materials presents an increasingly high percentage of the energy spent in the whole life cycle of a building. The same applies for carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, the development of new sustainable construction materi- als with lower embodied energy and lower CO2 emissions is needed. The use in construction of the brick made from soil, water and sand or straw, called adobe, boasts a millenary tradition and in recent years there has been re…
Sustainable mobile vertical partition / Pannello verticale mobile sostenibile
2016
Panel that can be used for realize mobile vertical partition, consisting of: a main wooden frame which functions as a structure (a); a mat realized with flattened and intertwined canes which functions as a closure (b); a wooden frame and slatted framework which function as a support (c); a layer of earthen…
