RGD-mimic polyamidoamine-montmorillonite composites with tunable stiffness as scaffolds for bone tissue-engineering applications

2017

This paper reports on the development of montmorillonite (MMT)-reinforced hydrogels, based on a peptidomimetic polyamidoamine carrying guanidine pendants (AGMA1), as substrates for the osteo-induction of osteoblast precursor cells. AGMA1 hydrogels of various degrees of crosslinking responded favourably to MMT reinforcement, giving rise to composite hydrogels with shear storage modulus G', when fully swollen in water, up to 200 kPa, i.e. 20 times higher than the virgin hydrogels and of the same order or higher than other hydrogel-based composites proposed for orthopaedic applications. This significant improvement was ascribed to the effective interpenetration between the polymer matrix and t…

Experimental characterization of variable-speed packaged rooftop units in presence of evaporator fouling

2022

Variable-speed packaged rooftop units have been increasingly adopted in the commercial sector. If not properly maintained, the fouling of heat exchangers and the improper refrigerant charge could increase energy consumption. In this work, the response of variable-speed rooftop units to evaporator fouling is investigated based on experiments on a variable-speed 17.5 kW rooftop unit. A novel testing procedure is proposed, aimed at covering a broad range of operating conditions by a reduced number of tests. Two opposite cases were investigated: (i) even in presence of fouling, the controller can restore the required cooling capacity, and (ii) the intensity of the fouling does not allow the con…

Alterations in the Emotional Regulation Process in Gambling Addiction: The Role of Anger and Alexithymia

2017

This study aims at the assessment of alexithymia and anger levels in 100 treatment-seeking pathological gamblers compared with controls, who were matched for age, gender and education. Furthermore a positive correlation between alexithymia, anger and severity of gambling disorder and a relationship between gambling behaviour and anger after controlling for alexithymia, are investigated. Finally the role that gender plays in anger in pathological gamblers was also evaluated. Psychological assessment includes the South Oaks Gambling Screen, State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 and the twenty-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale. Statistical analysis of the results shows a higher level of anger …

Psychodiagnostic Assessment of Pathological Gamblers: A Focus on Personality Disorders, Clinical Syndromes and Alexithymia

2015

Comorbid psychopathological syndromes are common in pathological gamblers (PGs), but the contribution of alexithymia, as a disorder of affect regulation, has not been fully explored yet. This study sought to examine the association between personality disorders, clinical syndromes and alexithymia levels in a group of PGs and to highlight a relationship between gambling behaviour and alexithymia scores, apart from the relationship between other disorders and gambling behaviour. Psychological assessment included the South Oaks Gambling Screen, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-III) and Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) performed on 70 treatment seeking PGs and 70 healthy controls. S…

Rejoinder on: Natural Induction: An Objective Bayesian Approach

2009

Giron and Moreno. We certainly agree with Professors Giron and Moreno on the interest in sensitivity of any Bayesian result to changes in the prior. That said, we also consider of considerable pragmatic importance to be able to single out a unique, particular prior which may reasonably be proposed as the reference prior for the problem under study, in the sense that the corresponding posterior of the quantity of interest could be routinely used in practice when no useful prior information is available or acceptable. This is precisely what we have tried to do for the twin problems of the rule of succession and the law of natural induction. The discussants consider the limiting binomial versi…

Stubborn sets, frozen actions, and fair testing

2021

Many partial order methods use some special condition for ensuring that the analysis is not terminated prematurely. In the case of stubborn set methods for safety properties, implementation of the condition is usually based on recognizing the terminal strong components of the reduced state space and, if necessary, expanding the stubborn sets used in their roots. In an earlier study it was pointed out that if the system may execute a cycle consisting of only invisible actions and that cycle is concurrent with the rest of the system in a non-obvious way, then the method may be fooled to construct all states of the full parallel composition. This problem is solved in this study by a method tha…

Assessment of mechanisms driving non-linear dose-response relationships in genotoxicity testing.

2014

In genetic toxicology, risk assessment has traditionally adopted linear dose-responses for any compound that causes genotoxic effects. Increasing evidence of non-linear dose-responses, however, suggests potential cellular tolerance to low levels of many genotoxicants with diverse modes of action. Such putative non-linear dose-responses need to be substantiated by strong mechanistic data that identifies the mechanisms responsible for the tolerance to low doses. This can be achieved by experimental demonstration of cytoprotective mechanisms and by providing experimental support for the existence of tolerance mechanisms against low dose effects. By highlighting key experiments into low dose me…

Asthma, allergies and respiratory symptoms in different activity groups of swimmers exercising in swimming halls

2021

Abstract Background Respiratory symptoms are common in competitive swimmers. However, among these and in swimmers at other activity levels the swimming distance, the total spent time in swimming halls and their medical background varies. Our objectives were, first, to assess their medical histories and the associations with respiratory symptoms among swimmers in different activity groups and then second, to study the pulmonary function findings and related medications in competitive swimmers who exercise in swimming hall environments the most. Methods First, 1118 participants consisting of 133 competitive-, 734 fitness- and 251 occasional swimmers answered questionnaires concerning their me…

Relationship between particle size and dissolution rate of bulk powders and sieving characterized fractions of two qualities of orthoboric acid

1996

Drug Dev. Ind. Pharm. ISI Document Delivery No.: VN279 Times Cited: 1 Cited Reference Count: 22 Tromelin, A Habillon, S Andres, C Pourcelot, Y Chaillot, B; International audience; We have carried out a study of the particle size distribution and aqueous dissolution rate of two commercially available qualities of orthoboric acid, labeled ''crystal'' (ABC) and ''powder'' (ABP). In a previous work, we have shown that the two commercial qualities of orthoboric acid chosen as model compound (''powder'' and ''crystal'') are related to the same crystal network in spite of their different names. However, these two qualities have very different size particle distributions, as previously determined b…
