Cancer invasion ad metastasis: discovering new targets for diagnosis and therapeutics

2009

Cancer invasion and metastases are the hallmarks of malignant tumors and the cause of most cancer deaths. Molecular alterations that arise during cancer progression and that generate abnormal gene products, activated signal transduction pathways, and altered cancer cell-host stroma interactions can be considered targets of therapeutic drugs. Some of these drugs have already entered clinical trials, while others have shown promising results. In this review, we examine some of the successive steps of the metastatic process: cancer cell migration and invasion of the tumor microenvironment, angiogenesis and following extravasation focusing on the deranged signalling pathways underlying the mali…

Professional freedom : A grounded theory on the use of music analysis in psychodynamic music therapy

2018

Although music is the fundamental element of music therapy, music analysis methods are a particularly under-researched area. This study investigates how and when psychodynamically orientated music therapists employ the analysis of musical material in both clinical work and research. Constructivist grounded theory was employed in the collection and analysis of the data. Eight participants, all highly experienced in psychodynamic music therapy, were recruited using referral sampling. In-depth interviews focused on therapists’ experiences of working with different client groups, and the applicability of different assessment methods. Strauss and Corbin’s coding paradigm was used to determine ca…

Psychometric Evaluation of the Norwegian Versions of the Modified Group Environment Questionnaire and the Youth Sport Environment Questionnaire

2021

This study aimed to translate the modified Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) and the Youth Sport Environment Questionnaire (YSEQ) into Norwegian, examine the factor structure and reliability of the scales through independent clusters model confirmatory factor analysis (ICM-CFA) and exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM), and examine differential item functioning (DIF) as a function of sex. Three-hundred-and-thirty-three athletes (M(SD)age  = 18.7(2.60) years; 33% females) completed the GEQ. Three-hundred-and-three athletes (M(SD)age  = 15.0(1.48) years; 26% females) completed the YSEQ. Results indicated acceptable fit indices for a four-factor, a second-order two-factor (task a…

Facing the music : a critical enquiry into 'the dodo-bird verdict' to develop music psychotherapy theory

2015

‘The dodo-bird verdict’ represents a boggling outcome of research that shows no significant difference between the outcomes of a variety of psychotherapy treatments. Not being able to scientifically discriminate between psychotherapeutic treatments, casts doubt on their theoretical underpinnings, and even on their efficacy. This in turn presents professionals who use psychotherapeutic techniques - including music therapists - with a conundrum: What can explain this inability? And what can be done to solve the problem? Conceptual research methods were used to analyse literature in order to answer these questions. Various weaknesses were identified, both in theory construction and in research…

The Psychiatrist's Role in Implementing Open Dialogue Model of Care

2019

The Open Dialogue approach is a family‐oriented early intervention model for mental health problems developed in the health district of Western Lapland, Finland. Since the 1990s the psychiatric service system in Western Lapland Health Care District has been organised according to Open Dialogue principles and applied to the treatment of any mental health concerns. The Open Dialogue approach considers the client and their family as active participants rather than as objects of treatment in its planning and implementation with a psychotherapeutic focus. In daily work, the responsibility for the treatment process is shared with the case‐specific team. The model of care requires a dialogical ori…

Effects of training on bone metabolism in young athletes

2021

Purpose. This study investigated the effects of two types of training on the bone formation marker of osteocalcin and the bone resorption marker of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoenzyme 5b (TRAP5b) in young track and field boys and girls. Methods. The 14-year-old group (10 boys, 10 girls) performed first time an intensive and supervised 8-week plyometric training. In the 17-year-old group (13 athletic boys, 6 control boys, 12 athletic girls, 6 control girls), the normal many-sided track and field training lasted 6 months. Results. Significant increases were noticed in osteocalcin (p < 0.01) both in younger boys and girls. The 20-m sprint performance improved in girls (p < 0.01) and …

The relationship between skin conductance and eye contact of spouses in couple therapy

2017

Tutkimuksen otos koostui 11 pariskunnasta, joi…

Exergaming in the treatment of gait, balance, and quality of life in Parkinson's disease: Overview of systematic reviews

2023

Introduction: Postural instability and gait impairments are common in people with PD, both of which have a negative effect on their quality of life. Systematic reviews have demonstrated benefits of using exergaming in enhancing these outcomes. However, there is no consensus over whether exergaming therapy is better than conventional physical therapy for enhancing gait, balance, and quality of life. Objectives: The aim of this overview is to systematically synthesize and evaluate the available evidence found in published systematic reviews and meta-analyses, on the effects of exergaming therapy on balance, gait, and quality of life, compared to conventional physical therapy or no interventio…
