In this work, the effectiveness of DNA barcoding approach was evaluated in order to identify different taxonomic groups among two families (Arecaceae and Fabaceae) from two flowering plant collections: some were economically important taxa from nursery production and Mediterranean plants with ornamental attitude for possible new introduction. Application of the moss bag biomonitoring technique in an active volcanic environment (Mt. Etna, Italy).

This paper presents the preliminary results of a biomonitoring study based on the use of moss bags exposed at 24 sites on Etna volcano. Sphagnum mosses were used to study bioaccumulation originating from atmospheric deposition, by measuring the tissue contents of major and a large suite of trace elements. Elements, such as Tl, Bi, As, Se, Cu and Cd, display high concentrations in the exposed samples close to the active vents. This study confirms the effectiveness of the moss bags technique also in active volcanic areas.

The Mediterranean Sea is a miniature ocean ideal to test the response of marine ecosystems to amplified orbital and suborbital climate changes. Here we present coccolith data from a Sardinia Channel gravity core (Arcose C_33) analysed over the last 145,000 years, with a mean resolution of about 900 years. The study highlights that regional phytoplankton assemblages underwent significant modifications between the penultimate glacial and the last interglacial, as well as between the last glacial and the Holocene. The trace algebra Cnd over a field of characteristic 0 is generated by all traces of products of d generic n × n matrices, n, d 2. Minimal sets of generators of Cnd are known for n = 2 and n = 3 for any d as well as for n = 4 and n = 5 and d = 2. The defining relations between the generators are found for n = 2 and any d and for n = 3, d = 2 only. Starting with the generating set of C3d given by Abeasis and Pittaluga in 1989, we have shown that the minimal degree of the set of defining relations of C3d is equal to 7 for any d 3.
