Indagine su Henosepilachna elaterii (Rossi) (=Epilachna chrysomelina (F.)) e Raphidopalpa foveicollis (Lucas) in meloneti biologici della Sicilia occ…

2011

Investigations on Henosepilachna elaterii (Rossi) and Raphidopalpa foveicollis (Lucas) in an organic cultivation of winter melon in western Sicily. A study on H. elaterii and R. Foveicollis, serious pests of winter melon, was conducted in two organic melon fields of the western Sicily. Dynamics of population and infestation levels were investigated. In addition, the possible influence of mulching on R. Foveicollis infestation has been taken into account. Our results showed that H. elaterii occurred only in one field from the beginning of June and it infested 60% of the plants in the mid-July, then the pest population density dropped to about 10%. R. foveicollis occurred in both locations fr…

Strategie di controllo di Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) con metodi alternativi agli interventi convenzionali in oliveti biologici della Sicilia occidentale

2011

This work reports studies on the population dynamics and safe control strategies of Bactrocera oleae in four unsprayed olive groves of western Sicily from 2007 to 2010. The main management tools for B. oleae evaluated were the“Attract and Kill” lures (Ecotrap Vioryl), the use of sardines (traditional practice) and Nu-lure (innovative) and the spinosad (innovative) which is a selective insect control product produced by the fermentation of a naturally occurring soil bacterium, Saccharopolyspora spinosa. Flies trend were carried out by pheromone traps and the level of infestation counting the number of fruits with pest eggs, larvae and pupae and hole hatching. Results showed that in all olive…

Neutrophil extracellular traps arm DC vaccination against NPM-mutant myeloproliferation

2022

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are web-like chromatin structures composed by dsDNA and histones, decorated with antimicrobial proteins. Their interaction with dendritic cells (DCs) allows DC activation and maturation toward presentation of NET-associated antigens. Differently from other types of cell death that imply protein denaturation, NETosis preserves the proteins localized onto the DNA threads for proper enzymatic activity and conformational status, including immunogenic epitopes. Besides neutrophils, leukemic cells can release extracellular traps displaying leukemia-associated antigens, prototypically mutant nucleophosmin (NPMc+) that upon mutation translocates from nucleolus …

Novel assay to diagnose and monitor cryopyrin associated periodic syndromes (CAPS)

2019

Introduction: Cryopyrin associated periodic syndromes (CAPS) are rare autoinflammatory disorders associated with dominantly gain-offunction mutations in the NLRP3 gene that result in overactivation of the inflammasome, increased secretion of interleukin (IL)-1beta and IL-18, and systemic inflammation. It has been reported that oligomeric particles of the adaptor ASC (apoptosis-associated Speck-like protein with a caspase-recruitment domain) are released together with IL-1beta and active caspase-1 subunits after activation of the inflammosome complex and that patients with CAPS show an increased serum concentration of ASC+ particles. Objectives: The diagnosis of CAPS is a critical factor due…

Genetic and clinical profile of a sicilian population with R92Q mutation

2017

Gene TNFRSF1A mutation is linked to TRAPS, autosomal dominant Autoinflammatory Disease (AID) with recurrent attacks of fever (2-3 weeks long), abdominal pain, vomiting, serositis, arthralgia and/or arthritis, myalgia, fasciitis, rash. The disease starts precociously and amyloidosis is reported in the 25% of the patients. Patients carrying the mutation R92Q usually show a mild clinical phenotype, with an extreme interindividual variability. Arthralgia and serositis are frequently less severe, however oral ulcers and pharyngitis are recurrent. Objectives: We studied the clinical and biochemical impact of the mutation R92Q in our population and the treatment outcome in all the patients with cl…

The performance of the cryogenic buffer-gas stopping cell of SHIPTRAP

2018

Direct high-precision mass spectrometry of the heaviest elements with SHIPTRAP, at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany, requires high efficiency to deal with the low production rates of such exotic nuclides. A second-generation gas stopping cell, operating at cryogenic temperatures, was developed and recently integrated into the relocated system to boost the overall efficiency. Offline measurements using 223Ra and 225Ac recoil-ion sources placed inside the gas volume were performed to characterize the gas stopping cell with respect to purity and extraction efficiency. In addition, a first online test using the fusion-evaporation residue 254No was performed, resulting in a combined stopping and extrac…

Airborne birch pollen in Poland and Latvia in the light of data obtained from aerobiological monitoring and tauber traps in relation to mean air temp…

2012

Birch pollen contains allergens belonging to those with the strongest allergenic properties. In order to trace pollen season patterns of this taxon and pollen annual sums at a wider regional scale, cooperation was established with the University of Latvia in Riga (Latvia). A comparison of the results obtained in the years 2003-2008 in Lublin and in Riga, using volumetric samplers, shows that there was a similar trend in the abundance of birch pollen. The highest sums were noted at both sites in 2003. In all the study years, more birch pollen grains were recorded in Lublin than in Riga, on the average by 7110. The birch pollen seasons started earlier in Lublin than in Riga, on the average by…

Adenoviral vector-based COVID-19 vaccines-associated cerebral venous sinus thromboses: Are those adverse events related to the formation of neutrophi…

2022

In March and April 2021 several countries temporarily suspended vaccinations with adenoviral vector-based COVID-19 vaccines. Concerns of national regulators particularly regarded very rare cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis after immunization with this type of vaccine. Until now, these adverse events were interpreted as standard hypercoagulable events, but their clinical characteristics suggest that they may actually represent unique thrombotic disorders referred to as immunothrombosis. In this paper it is speculated that it is possible that immunothrombosis after this type of vaccine results from formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in veins affected by stagnant blood …

A Risk-Based Approach for Mitigating Ethical Lapses

2019

In early 2008, the CEO of Volkswagen announced a 10-year plan that called for tripling the company’s U.S. sales by 2018. The executive gave marching orders to engineers to come up with a new technology that would enable VW to lower emissions of the new cars. The engineers failed to come up with a device that could do the job. Instead they deployed a defeating software would defeat the testing process. The 2009 VW Jetta clean diesel was launched in April 2008 and followed by the introduction of similarly equipped VW Golfs and Audi A3s. Over 145,000 vehicles were sold in the U.S. in three years. The scheme was eventually exposed, costing the company millions of dollars. This paper describes t…
