Experimental test on the use of MS-222 for ostracod anaesthesia: concentration, immersion period and recovery time

2010

Anaesthesia of animals may be useful for different purposes, particularly for veterinary reasons or in experimental research, for manipulation or treatment of immobilized but alive animals. Its use in crustaceans is not uncommon, but it has never been described for Ostracoda. We provide brief and preliminary guidelines on the use of the tricaine mesylate (MS-222) on the widespread freshwater ostracod Eucypris virens and we show that this compound is an effective anaesthetic used as a bath treatment at minimum concentrations of 500 mg L-1. This value is considerably higher than that recommended for other aquatic animals like fish. Recovery time, ranging from 5 to 15 minutes, is mostly determ…

Zur Achillessehnenbelastung im alpinen Skisport

1987

In an attempt to gain more systematic knowledge of the biomechanical mechanism involved in the genesis of injuries caused by a fall during skiing, we undertook a comprehensive analysis of more than 100 experimental ski falls simulated under controlled conditions. The well-known relation between speed, release time of the ski binding and injury risk of the lower extremity was confirmed by our experimental results. The EMG investigations revealed the central importance of the musculus triceps surae, and hence of the Achilles tendon, during a fall. The results of our biomechanical model indicate that the present method of setting the ski binding according to the tibial strength, is rather ques…

Histologic evaluation of thermal damage produced on soft tissues by CO2, Er,Cr:YSGG and diode lasers

2010

Objective: The aim of this in vitro experimental study was to perform histological evaluation of the thermal effect produced on soft tissue irradiated with CO2 , Er,Cr:YSGG or diode lasers. Study design: Porcine oral mucosa samples were irradiated with Er,Cr:YSGG laser at 1 W with and without water / air spray, at 2 W with and without water / air spray, and at 4 W with water / air spray, with CO2 laser at 1 W, 2 W, 10 W, 20 W continuous mode and 20 W pulsed mode and diode laser at 2W, 5W, and 10W pulsed mode. The thermal effect was evaluated measuring the width of damaged tissue adjacent to the incision, stained positively for hyalinized tissue with Hematoxylin-Eosin and Masson Trichrome st…

Tips and tricks in office hysteroscopy

2015

Abstract Office hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that has been shown to be highly accurate in diagnosing abnormalities of the endometrial cavity and the endocervical canal. It allows the direct visualizing of uterine pathology without the need for general anesthesia and the use of an operating room, generating cost savings and greater compliance among patients. The advent of small-diameter hysteroscopes, the use of saline solution as a distension media, as well as the vaginoscopic technique have widely contributed to the diffusion of this technique worldwide, and currently it can be considered the gold standard for the examination of the uterine cavity. The improved technology…

The Madonna suckling the Child, the type of architectural throne on which she is placed and the presence of the rare iconogr…

Maxillary sinus lift with intraoral autologous bone and B ? Tricalcium Phosphate : histological and histomorphometric clinical study

2007

Introduction: Rehabilitation with implants in the upper maxilla often implies a challenge due to the shortage and quality of the remaining bone. Different kinds of grafts have been described in an endeavour to solve these problems. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the osteoconduction potential of an autogenous bone and B-Tricalcium Phosphate mixture, in the treatment of atrophic upper maxillae. Materials and Methods: 22 patients were treated using the "sinus lift" technique. All patients had residual bone equal to or greater than 5 mm, the sinus was lifted, bone grafted and implants installed during the same surgical procedure (autologous bone and B- Tricalcium Phospahate). Duri…
