Effect of Pre-Reduction on the Properties and the Catalytic Activity of Pd/Carbon Catalysts: A Comparison with Pd/Al2O3

2013

The effect of pre-reduction in solution with chemical reagents on the catalytic performance and catalyst properties of Pd/carbon catalysts was systematically investigated with a multitechnique approach. The results are critically discussed in comparison to those recently obtained on analogous Pd/alumina catalysts. It was proved that the Pd phase on the carbon surface is characterized by a high mobility, opposite to what occurs on alumina. As a result, the Pd particles on carbon aggregate together during pre-reduction, with a consequent decrease in available metal surface. Pd particles remain aggregated also in reaction conditions; the decreased Pd dispersion negatively affects the catalyst …

Synthesis of CO2-responsive polymers by post-polymerization modification

2014

Abstract We describe a general method to synthesize a double responsive polymer, exhibiting a temperature and CO 2 responsive behavior. The polymer derived from a controlled radical polymerization technique of pentafluorophenyl acrylate (PFPA), followed by a sequential post-polymerization modification of a CO 2 responsive- and thermo-responsive amines. Utilizing this approach three double responsive copolymers were synthesized, poly(3- N′,N′ -dimethylaminopropyl acrylamide- co - N -isopropyl acrylamide) (poly(DMPA- co -NIPAM)), poly( L -Arginine methyl ester acrylamide- co - N -isopropyl acrylamide) (poly(AME- co -NIPAM)) and poly( L -Arginine methyl ester acrylamide- co - N -cyclopropyl ac…

Phase transitions in some n-alkanes and petroleum waxes — investigation by photoacoustic and exoelectron emission techniques

2000

Abstract The use of the photoacoustic (PA) effect and photostimulated exoelectron emission (EEE) technique in the investigation of first- and second-order phase transitions in pure n -alkanes such as n -C 22 , n -C 28 and n -C 32 and in three petroleum waxes having different carbon number distributions, have been examined. Changes in the amplitude and phase of the PA signal with temperature and the temperature dependence of the intensity of photostimulated EEE across the phase transitions have been measured. These measurements have shown that both the polymorphic phase transitions and melting of these hydrocarbons are accompanied by jumps or peaks of the PA amplitude and phase and EEE inten…

Acidic Ionic Liquids as Composite Forming Additives for Ion-conducting Materials

2013

This paper represents the material conductivity investigation of several AILs (Acidic Ionic Liquids) containing an alkane sulfonic acid group covalently bonded to pyridine and N–alkylimidazole cations. Three different anions (HSO4-, H2PO4- and TsO-) have been introduced in the structure of ionic liquids to evaluate the impact of this factor on material conductivity. Ion conductivity values in all studied ionic liquids obtained from impedance measurements in temperature range from 20 to 120 °C. Values of electroconductivity depending on ionic liquid's structure vary in rage from 1.3410−5 to 1.0510−2 S/cm at 25 °C.

Temperature-responsive inclusion complex of cationic PNIPAAM diblock copolymer and γ-cyclodextrin

2012

Aqueous mixtures of γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and the thermosensitive cationic diblock copolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride (PNIPAAM24-b-PAMPTAM(+)9) or the PNIPAAM homopolymer PNIPAAM47 have been investigated using various experimental methods. Solid γ-CD–polymer inclusion complexes (pseudopolyrotaxanes) form at ambient temperatures in fairly concentrated CD solutions. The NMR measurements showed that the stoichiometry of the inclusion complexes is close to two NIPAAM units per CD molecule. The cationic block of the copolymer is not incorporated into the CD cavity. Synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction spectra of the solid inclusion compl…

Thermal diffusion of dextran in aqueous solutions in the absence and the presence of urea.

2006

The Ludwig-Soret effect was studied for aqueous solutions of dextran in the temperature range 15T55 degrees C taking into account the effect of the addition of urea. In the absence of urea, the Soret coefficient S(T) changes sign; it is positive for T45.0 degrees C but negative for T45.0 degrees C. The positive sign of S(T) means that the dextran molecules migrate toward the cold side of the fluid; this behavior is typical for polymer solutions, whereas a negative sign indicates the macromolecules move toward the hot side. The addition of urea to the aqueous solution of dextran rises S(T) and reduces the inversion temperature. For 2 M urea the change in the sign of S(T) is observed at T = 2…

Low-Temperature Optical Spectroscopy of Native and Azide-Reacted Bovine Cu,Zn Superoxide Dismutase. A Structural Dynamics Study

1994

The optical absorption spectra of native and N(3-)-reacted Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) has been studied in the temperature range 300-10 K. The broad d-d bands observed in the room temperature spectrum, centered at 14,700 cm-1 (native enzyme) and at 15,550 cm-1 (N(3-)-reacted enzyme), are clearly split at low temperature into two bands each, centered at 12,835 and 14,844 cm-1 and at 14,418 and 16,300 cm-1, respectively. The thermal behavior of the 23,720 cm-1 band present in the spectrum of the native enzyme indicates that this band belongs to the His61-->Cu(II) ligand to metal charge transfer transition. Analysis of the zeroth, first, and second moments of the various bands as a functi…

Temperature and light sensitive copolymers containing azobenzene moieties prepared via a polymer analogous reaction

2009

Abstract Four different series of polyacrylamides containing different amounts of azobenzene moieties have been synthesized via a polymer analogous reaction of poly(pentafluorophenylacrylate) (PPFPA). All copolymers were designed to exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in aqueous solution, which was dependent on (i) the amount of incorporated chromophoric azobenzene groups and (ii) the isomerization state of the respective azobenzene group. Higher LCST values were measured for UV-irradiated solutions of the copolymers in comparison to the non-irradiated copolymer solutions. A maximum difference in the LCST of up to 7 °C was found for the copolymer poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide…

Microscale magnesium distribution in shell of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis: An example of multiple factors controlling Mg/Ca in…

2019

Abstract Since magnesium concentration (Mg/Ca) in biogenic calcite is considered to reflect water temperature during precipitation, the magnesium-to‑calcium ratio has been examined as a proxy for water temperature in paleoclimate research, although factors other than temperature may also influence Mg/Ca in biogenic calcite, thereby introducing a potential bias in the relationship between Mg/Ca and temperature observed in inorganic systems. To better understand factors controlling Mg incorporation into the calcitic shells of bivalves, the distribution of Mg in the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis was studied, being compared with ambient sea surface temperature (SST), shell grow…
