Calculation of the molecular masses of two newly synthesized thermostable enzymes isolated from thermophilic microorganisms

1995

Two thermostable enzymes synthesized by thermophilic microorganisms were isolated and purified. A thermostable beta-galactosidase was produced in a continuous fermentation process by Bacillus stearothermophilus TP 32 as an intracellular enzyme. After applying different concentration procedures the raw extract enzyme was prepurified on a Sephadex G-200 size exclusion column. The isolated beta-galactosidase fraction was then separated with HPLC on a TSK G 3000 SW size exclusion column to determine the molecular mass based on calibration curves of standard proteins. The other enzyme, a thermostable protease, was synthesized by Bacillus stearothermophilus TP 26 as an extracellular enzyme. After…

Hofmann-Like Frameworks Fe(2-methylpyrazine)n[M(CN)2]2 (M = Au, Ag) : Spin-Crossover Defined by the Precious Metal

2020

Hofmann-like cyanometalates constitute a large class of spin-crossover iron(II) complexes with variable switching properties. However, it is not yet clearly understood how the temperature and cooperativity of a spin transition are influenced by their structure. In this paper, we report the synthesis and crystal structures of the metal–organic coordination polymers {FeII(Mepz)[AuI(CN)2]2} ([Au]) and {FeII(Mepz)2[AgI(CN)2]2} ([Ag]), where Mepz = 2-methylpyrazine, along with characterization of their spin-state behavior by variable-temperature SQUID magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The compounds are built of cyanoheterometallic layers, which are pillared by the bridging Mepz…

Shear influences on the solubility of LDPE in ethene

1998

Abstract The influence of shear on the demixing pressures of the binary system ethene/polyethene was determined viscometrically in the temperature range 147–195°C up to pressures of 1400 bar at polymer concentrations of 18.4, 22.5 and 27.4 wt%, respectively. Autoclaves were used to prepare the solutions and to measure cloud points for the stagnant system. A high-pressure viscometer was used to perform experiments at shear rates γ up to 1500 s −1 . Under all conditions investigated here the two-phase area grows as γ becomes larger and the demixing pressures increase up to 23 bar. This observation is in contrast to theoretical expectation according to which it should be the one-phase region w…

GLASS TRANSITION IN THIN POLYMER FILMS: A MOLECULAR DYNAMICS STUDY

2002

A melt of nonentangled polymer chains confined between two smooth and purely repulsive walls is studied for various film thicknesses D and temperatures. The dynamics of the supercooled films is qualitatively identical to that of the bulk, but the walls lead to faster relaxation. To quantify this observation we analyze the data by the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of the glass transition. We find that the critical temperature of MCT, Tc(D), decreases with D and that T - Tc(D) is a relevant temperature scale. The static structure factor and dynamic correlation functions at intermediate times coincide with bulk behavior when compared to the same T - Tc(D).

Impact of operation condition on temperature distribution in single cell of polymer electrolyte fuel cell operated at higher temperature than usual

2016

For improving performance of the stationary Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) system, the cell operating temperature up to 90°C will be preferred in Japan during the period from 2020 to 2030. To understand the operation of the PEFC system under relatively high temperature conditions, detail heat and mass transfer analysis is required. The main focus of this study is to analyze the PEFC performance under operational conditions, such as initial operational temperature of cell (Tini), relative humidity of supply gas, and the cathode gas type, temperature distribution in a cell of PEFC (using Nafion membrane) under relatively higher operating temperature conditions. The in-plane temperature …

Positron Annihilation in Alkali Halides at Low Temperatures

1986

We report on low-temperature positron studies for pure, single crystals of the alkali halides KCl, NaCl and NaF. Strong temperature dependences are observed in the lifetime and angular correlation measurements in the temperature range 10–300 K. Delocalized para-positronium is observed at low temperatures in the three crystals. The broadening, with rising temperature, of the narrow peak in the angular correlation curve can be accounted for by the self-trapping model of positronium. The results are discussed in the light of this model, in terms of positronium localization at imperfections and in terms of positron interactions with imperfections created in the spur of the positron. The increas…

The Crystalline State of Macromolecular Substances

1974

Unlike low molecular weight substances, high polymers do not crystallize completely. However long the crystallization process is continued, they still consist of a mixture of crystalline and non crystalline regions. In the undrawn material, these regions form larger units which are known as spherulites. Questions that are of special interest concern the arrangement of the chains in the noncrystalline regions, the causes of chain folding, and the imperfections in the crystals. The incomplete crystallization is a consequence of kinetic inhibitions. This can be deduced from the fact that the crystalline fraction increases with rising crystallization temperature. If polymerization is carried ou…

Infrared spectroscopic study of a phenyl benzoate side group—methacrylate main chain polymeric liquid crystal

1994

Abstract The temperature dependence of the infrared dichroism of a side chain polymeric liquid crystal was investigated for two homogeneously oriented samples, one aligned with a PVA coating and the other aligned by a magnetic field. From the apparent order parameters, it was found that the rotation of the mesogenic side group was restricted. Not only the rigid part of the side group, but also the alkyl chains were found to be partly ordered. Realignment of the side groups was observed in the case of the magnetically aligned sample at the smectic-nematic transition temperature. Unlike the other absorption bands, the C˭O bond vibration band shifted to higher wavenumbers with increasing tempe…

Effect of physical aging on the low-frequency vibrational density of states of a glassy polymer

2003

The effects of the physical aging on the vibrational density of states (VDOS) of a polymeric glass is studied. The VDOS of a poly(methyl methacrylate) glass at low-energy (<15 meV), was determined from inelastic neutron scattering at low-temperature for two different physical thermodynamical states. One sample was annealed during a long time at temperature lower than Tg, and another was quenched from a temperature higher than Tg. It was found that the VDOS around the boson peak, relatively to the one at higher energy, decreases with the annealing at lower temperature than Tg, i.e., with the physical aging.

Photoresponsive Ferroelectric Liquid-Crystalline Polymers

2007

The photoresponse of ferroelectric smectic side-chain liquid-crystalline (LC) polymers containing a photoisomerizable azobenzene derivative as a covalently linked photochromic side group is investigated. By static measurements in different photostationary states, the effect of trans-cis isomerization on the material's phase-transition temperatures and its ferroelectric properties (spontaneous electric polarization Ps and director tilt angle 0) are analyzed. It turns out that the Curie temperature (transition S C * to S A ) can be reversibly shifted by up to 17 °C. The molecular mechanism of this "photoferroelectric effect" is studied in detail using time-resolved measurements of the dye's o…
