Spin dependence of {\eta} meson production in proton-proton collisions close to threshold

Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high degree of the polarized proton beam of COSY, the reaction pp{\to} pp{\eta} has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power Ay. The angular distribution of Ay is determined with the precision improved by more than one order of magnitude with respect to previous results allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q = 15 MeV signaling s wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves. Measurements of forward proton production with incident protons and charged pions on nuclear targets at the CERN Proton Synchroton

Measurements of the double-differential proton production cross-section d(2 sigma)/dpd Omega in the range of momentum 0.5 GeV/c <= p < 8.0 GeV/c and angle 0.05 rad <= theta < 0.25 rad in collisions of charged pions and protons on beryllium, carbon, aluminium, copper, tin, tantalum, and lead are presented. The data were taken with the large acceptance HARP detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. Incident particles were identified by an elaborate system of beam detectors and impinged on a target of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. Three-Body Analysis of Incoherent Photoproduction of η Mesons on the Deuteron near Threshold

The importance of three-body dynamics in the ηnp system in elastic and inelastic η-deuteron scattering as well as coherent and incoherent η photo-production on the deuteron in the energy region from threshold up to 30 MeV above has been investigated. It is shown that a restriction to first order rescattering with respect to the NN- and ηN-final state interactions, i.e., restriction to rescattering in the two-body subsystems, does not give a sufficiently accurate approximation to the s-wave reaction amplitude and that higher order terms, as described by the three-body dynamics give very substantial contributions.
Deuteron electrodisintegration near threshold at high momentum transfer

Electrodisintegration of the deuteron near the break-up threshold is a particularly striking example of the existence of exchange currents (EC). While the conventional one-body current contribution grossly underestimates the experimental cross-section up to a momentum transfer of aboutq μ 2 =15 fm−2, the inclusion of EC—dominantly π-MEC—leads to a drastic increase in satisfactory agreement with experimental data up toq 2=9 fm−2.
Mass and Γ3π0/Γγγ decay branching ratio of theη-meson from the p(γ, η)p reaction

Near threshold photoproduction ofη-mesons from the proton has been measured at the MAMI accelerator with the TAPS spectrometer. The mass of theη-meson was deduced from the threshold energy forη-photoproduction. The result of m η =(547.12 ± 0.06 ± 0.25) MeV supports the low value of theη-mass reported from a dp →3Heη measurement at SATURNE in 1992. Theη-decay branching ratio Γ3π0/Γγγ was measured to be (0.832±0.005±0.012).
A method for measuring total cross sections of (γ, π−) reactions at threshold

Abstract A new method for detecting low energy negative pions has been investigated. The negative pions are identified via monoenergetic neutrons produced in the reaction π − + D → 2 n and detected by means of a time of flight spectrometer. The feasibility for measuring D ( γ , π − ) cross sections near threshold is demonstrated; an extension to heavier nuclei seems to be possible. Futher the method is well suited for applications together with tagged photon beams.

The aim of this study was to provide information on energy availability (EA), macronutrient intake, nutritional periodization practices, and nutrition knowledge in young female cross-country skiers. A total of 19 skiers filled in weighted food and training logs before and during a training camp. Nutrition knowledge was assessed via a validated questionnaire. EA was optimal in 11% of athletes at home (mean 33.7 ± 9.6 kcal·kgFFM−1·d−1) and in 42% at camp (mean 40.3 ± 17.3 kcal·kgFFM−1·d−1). Most athletes (74%) failed to meet recommendations for carbohydrate intake at home (mean 5.0 ± 1.2 g·kg−1·d−1) and 63% failed to do so at camp (mean 7.1 ± 1.6 g·kg−1·d−1). Background Animal experiments indicate that 1,1,1-trichloroethane can cause degeneration of the olfactory epithelium. The effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane on human odor perception still have not been investigated. The goal of this study was to learn more about acute effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane. Methods Twelve healthy, nonsmoking students were exposed to 200 and 20 ppm (control) 1,1,1-trichloroethane in an exposure chamber for 4 hours according to a crossover design. Abstract Objective Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is caused by a low partial pressure of oxygen and may occur above 2500 m. The aim of this research was to evaluate olfactory and gustatory abilities of healthy subjects during baseline conditions and after seven hours of normobaric hypoxia. Methods Sixteen healthy subjects were assessed using the Sniffin’ Sticks, as well as intensity and pleasantness ratings. Gustatory function was evaluated utilizing the Taste Strips.
