Orthographic depth and its impact on universal predictors of reading: a cross-language investigation
2010
Alphabetic orthographies differ in the transparency of their letter-sound mappings, with English orthography being less transparent than other alphabetic scripts. The outlier status of English has led scientists to question the generality of findings based on English-language studies. We investigated the role of phonological awareness, memory, vocabulary, rapid naming, and nonverbal intelligence in reading performance across five languages lying at differing positions along a transparency continuum (Finnish, Hungarian, Dutch, Portuguese, and French). Results from a sample of 1,265 children in Grade 2 showed that phonological awareness was the main factor associated with reading performance…
Objectively Measured School Day Physical Activity Among Elementary Students in the United States and Finland.
2015
Background:Schools are in a unique position to ensure that all students meet the current physical activity (PA) recommendations. This study aimed to examine 1st to 3rd grade elementary students’ accelerometer measured school day PA in the United States (U.S.) and Finland. Methods:The sample consisted of 200 students (107 girls, 93 boys; ages 6 to 8) and their school day PA was monitored with hip-worn ActiGraph GT3X+ accelerometers across a 5-day school week and the thresholds 100 and 2296 count per minute were used to separate sedentary time, light PA, and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA).Results:On an average school day, students were engaged in MVPA for 20.0 min in the U.S. and 24.1 min in F…
Regression imputation for Space-Time datasets with missing values
2009
Data consisting in repeated observations on a series of fixed units are very common in different context like biological, environmental and social sciences, and different terminology is often used to indicate this kind of data: panel data, longitudinal data, time series-cross section data (TSCS), spatio-temporal data. Missing information are inevitable in longitudinal studies, and can produce biased estimates and loss of powers. The aim of this paper is to propose a new regression (single) imputation method that, considering the particular structure and characteristics of the data set, creates a “complete” data set that can be analyzed by any researcher on different occasions and using diff…
A GPU-Based Multi-agent System for Real-Time Simulations
2010
The huge number of cores existing in current Graphics Processor Units (GPUs) provides these devices with computing capabilities that can be exploited by distributed applications. In particular, these capabilites have been used in crowd simulations for enhancing the crowd rendering, and even for simulating continuum crowds. However, GPUs have not been used for simulating large crowds of complex agents, since these simulations require distributed architectures that can support huge amounts of agents. In this paper, we propose a GPU-based multi-agent system for crowd simulation. Concretely, we propose the use of an on-board GPU to implement one of the main tasks that a distributed server for c…
Complexity traits and synchrony of cryptocurrencies price dynamics
2021
AbstractIn this study, we characterized the dynamics and analyzed the degree of synchronization of the time series of daily closing prices and volumes in US$ of three cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin, over the period September 1,2015–March 31, 2020. Time series were first mapped into a complex network by the horizontal visibility algorithm in order to revel the structure of their temporal characters and dynamics. Then, the synchrony of the time series was investigated to determine the possibility that the cryptocurrencies under study co-bubble simultaneously. Findings reveal similar complex structures for the three virtual currencies in terms of number and internal composit…
Formation of luminescence centres under excitation with electron beams in PbWO 4 and ZnWO 4 crystals
2005
The leading edge of intrinsic luminescence pulse in PbWO 4 and ZnWO 4 single crystals is studied. The rise of luminescence intensity is observed after excitation with electron beam pulse. The luminescence rise is shown tobe a result of luminescence center formation via electron-hole recombination within spatially correlated pairs. An electron of a geminate electron-hole pair of PbWO 4 crystal self-traps and stimulates self-trapping of a hole at a close distance. In the ZnWO 4 crystal a hole of a geminate electron-hole pair self-traps and stimulates self-trapping of the electron producing a W 5 + center at a short distance. The rise-time of luminescence depends on spatial separation of recom…

Associations between Sports Videogames and Physical Activity in Children
2022
Abstract Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the associations of sports video gaming behaviour in the sociological concept of Physical Activity Relationships (PAR) and to see if sports video gaming differs by gender. Methods: A convenience sample of children between 11–12 years of age (n = 114) from three Finnish regions completed a questionnaire on perceptions of their video gaming and physical activity habits. Differences by gender were tested by contingency tables, and blockwise binary logistic regressions were used to examine the strength of association with physical activity behaviour in PAR. Results: Almost all girls had low importance to video gaming and over two thirds (7…
Un-rooted grafted cuttings for eggplant plug-transplant production and shipping: simulated transportation and healing requirements
2019
Vegetable grafting is one of the most effective eco-friendly techniques to overcome pests and soilborne diseases in modern cropping systems of fruiting vegetables. Due to the increased farmers’ preference for grafted seedlings of high quality and better performance, the use of vegetable grafted plants is rapidly spreading and expanding over the world and intensive researches on new commercial production systems are under way. However, in many areas of the world, due to the high cost of skilled manpower, the use of grafted plug plants is still limited causing a relatively slow development of the grafting nursery industry. The aim of this work was to evaluate a possible use of un-rooted graft…
Effects of Gliding Properties of Cross-Country Skis on the Force Production during Skating Technique in Elite Cross-Country Skiers
2013
The aim of the present study was to examine how different gliding conditions of skis affect performance, cycle characteristics and leg and pole force production during V2 skating. Ten elite skiers skied on 100 m uphill (4°) at three different constant speeds (4.0, 4.8 and 5.6 m/s) and maximum speed using two differently prepared skating skis (fast and slow ski). With the slow ski, maximum speed was 6.4 % slower than with the fast ski. With constant speeds, cycle time got shorter due to a decrease in the recovery time of the leg and pole. Peak pole force and average cycle force increased as well as lateral leg forces while there were no changes in the vertical leg forces. A strategy for how…
