THE 1-HARMONIC FLOW WITH VALUES IN A HYPEROCTANT OF THE N-SPHERE

2014

We prove the existence of solutions to the 1-harmonic flow — that is, the formal gradient flow of the total variation of a vector field with respect to the [math] -distance — from a domain of [math] into a hyperoctant of the [math] -dimensional unit sphere, [math] , under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we characterize the lower-order term appearing in the Euler–Lagrange formulation in terms of the “geodesic representative” of a BV-director field on its jump set. Such characterization relies on a lower semicontinuity argument which leads to a nontrivial and nonconvex minimization problem: to find a shortest path between two points on [math] with respect to a metric w…

Mathematical modeling of a vehicle crash test based on elasto-plastic unloading scenarios of spring-mass models

2011

Published version of an article in the journal: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher on SpringerLink: htp://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-010-3056-x This paper investigates the usability of spring which exhibit nonlinear force-deflection characteristic in the area of mathematical modeling of vehicle crash. We present a method which allows us to obtain parameters of the spring-mass model basing on the full-scale experimental data analysis. Since vehicle collision is a dynamic event, it involves such phenomena as rebound and energy dissipation. Three different spring unloading scenarios (elastic, plastic, and elasto-plastic) are covered…

A second strain gradient elasticity theory with second velocity gradient inertia – Part I: Constitutive equations and quasi-static behavior

2013

Abstract A multi-cell homogenization procedure with four geometrically different groups of cell elements (respectively for the bulk, the boundary surface, the edge lines and the corner points of a body) is envisioned, which is able not only to extract the effective constitutive properties of a material, but also to assess the “surface effects” produced by the boundary surface on the near bulk material. Applied to an unbounded material in combination with the thermodynamics energy balance principles, this procedure leads to an equivalent continuum constitutively characterized by (ordinary, double and triple) generalized stresses and momenta. Also, applying this procedure to a (finite) body s…

Vitamin A in parenteral nutrition: uptake and distribution of retinyl esters after intravenous application.

1989

Short-term parenteral application of vitamin A was examined in rats. Retinyl margarinate, which is chemically similar to physiological retinyl esters, was used in vitamin A-depleted rats to study uptake, distribution, and storage of retinyl esters in tissues. Vitamin A-depleted and Vitamin A-sufficient rats were infused with a micellar suspension of retinyl margarinate for 7 h and then killed at different times. Retinyl margarinate was directly taken up by all tissues examined. It appears that infusion of retinyl esters in micellar form provides a direct way to supply vitamin A to peripheral, vitamin A-dependent tissues. Therefore, a short-term infusion of retinyl esters with an emulsifier …

On-line database of voltammetric data of immobilized particles for identifying pigments and minerals in archaeometry, conservation and restoration (E…

2016

[EN] A web-based database of voltammograms is presented for characterizing artists' pigments and corrosion products of ceramic, stone and metal objects by means of the voltammetry of immobilized particles methodology. Description of the website and the database is provided. Voltammograms are, in most cases, accompanied by scanning electron microphotographs, X-ray spectra, infrared spectra acquired in attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy mode (ATR-FTIR) and diffuse reflectance spectra in the UV-Vis-region. For illustrating the usefulness of the database two case studies involving identification of pigments and a case study describing deterioration of an archae…

TWO CASES OF NON-ALCOHOLIC WERNICKE ENCEPHALOPATHY SUCCESSFULLY TREATED BY THIAMINE REPLACEMENT: DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC CONSIDERATIONS

2010

Wernicke’s encephalopathy (WE) is an acute neurologi- cal disorder, due to a lack of thiamin (vitamin B1) which is observed mainly in alcoholic patients. Unfortunately, the syn- drome is underestimated in clinical practice and most often recognized only on autopsy, especially among non-alcoholics. The common clinical picture include mental status changes, ocular dysfunction, and gait ataxia. Treatment consists of timely thiamine replacement through intravenous infusion. We describe the case of two patients who developed a non-alcoholic WE post-surgical, regressed completely after intravenous infusion of thiamine. These cases suggest intere- sting diagnostic and therapeutic implications.

Determination at low ppm levels of dithiocarbamate residues in foodstuff by vapour phase-liquid phase microextraction-infrared spectroscopy

2010

Abstract A methodology based on the vapour phase (VP) generation of carbon disulphide from non-volatile dithiocarbamate compounds has been developed for determination of pesticide residues in foodstuff at low ppm levels. The method involves a selective reaction combined with liquid phase microextraction (LPME) and transmission infrared measurements. The use of a home made transmission cell improved the detection limits (LOD) compared to the use of attenuated total reflectance measurements by a factor of approximately 80. Using the most appropriate experimental conditions for the CS2 generation and LPME preconcentration, the precision of the methodology, expressed as the relative standard de…
