Spinal metastases: Is stereotactic body radiation therapy supported by evidences?
2016
Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is becoming widely adopted in the treatment of primary and secondary tumors. Spinal bone metastases are frequently discovered in cancer patients, and in the past have been usually treated with a palliative goal. Nevertheless, in some particular clinical settings, such as oligometastatic patients and/or those with a long life expectancy, spinal SBRT could be considered a valid therapeutic option to obtain long-lasting palliation and, when possible, with a curative goal. This review aims to summarize available clinical and dosimetric data of published studies about spinal SBRT.

AbstractBackground: Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is defined by a dilated and impaired left ventricle due to chronic excess alcohol consumption. It is largely unknown which factors determine cardi...
Current state of critically ill patients sedation with volatile anesthetics. Its role in renal and hepatic toxicity
2013
Summary The anesthetic-conserving device (AnaConDa™) facilitated, from a technical viewpoint, the routine use of volatile anesthetics in intensive care patients using ICU ventilators. To date, its use is currently time-limited by clinicians due to the potential renal and hepatic toxicity associated with the production of plasma fluoride after its metabolism, despite its advantages. We reviewed the available human and animal studies literature examining the use of volatile anesthetics as sedative agents and its role in renal and/or hepatic toxicity. We have very few studies concerning the prolonged administration of sevoflurane through the AnaConDa™ and its effect on renal and hepatic functi…
An unusual fatal case of overdose of Vinblastine and review of literature
2017
The pharmacological treatment of neoplasia is based on the use of chemotherapeutic substances. Chemotherapeutic agents can cause acute and chronic toxicity even at therapeutic doses. For this reason their overdose puts a patientâs life at severe risk. This work presents an unusual fatal case of overdose subsequent to an accidental massive administration of Vinblastine (90Â mg instead of 9Â mg), slow bolus (five minutes), to a 33-year-old woman who suffered from Hodgkinâs Lymphoma. The administration of the massive dose was due to a transcription error of the therapeutic treatment plan and miscommunication between the health professionals which caused the use of the wrong dose. The foren…
Tolerance of Whitefish (Coregonus Lavaretus) Early Life Stages to Manganese Sulfate is Affected by the Parents
2017
European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) embryos and larvae were exposed to 6 different manganese sulfate (MnSO4) concentrations from fertilization to the 3-d-old larvae. The fertilization success, offspring survival, larval growth, yolk consumption, embryonic and larval Mn tissue concentrations, and transcript levels of detoxification-related genes were measured in the long-term incubation. A full factorial breeding design (4 females × 2 males) allowed examination of the significance of both female and male effects, as well as female–male interactions in conjunction with the MnSO4 exposure in terms of the observed endpoints. The MnSO4 exposure reduced the survival of the whitefish early li…
Toxicity of biomining effluents to Daphnia magna : Acute toxicity and transcriptomic biomarkers
2018
Increasing metal consumption is driving the introduction of new techniques such as biomining to exploit low grade ores. The biomining impacts notably aquatic ecosystems, yet, the applicability of ecotoxicological tests to study the complex mixture effects of mining waters is insufficiently understood. The aim of the present work was to test if transcriptomic biomarkers are suitable and sensitive for the ecotoxicity assessment of biomining affected waters. The study site had been affected by a multimetal biomine, and the studied water samples formed a concentration gradient of contamination downstream from the biomining site. Cadmium and nickel were used as positive controls in the toxicity …
Acute toxicity of experimental fertilizers made of blood meal, spent coffee ground and biomass ash
2017
Chronic toxicity of diazinon todaphnia magna:Effects on survival, reproduction and growth
1995
The sublethal effect of 0.15, 0.18, 0.22, 0.25 and 0.30 μg/L diazinon on the survival, reproduction and growth of D. magna was monitored for 21 days. Neonates (≤ 24 h) were obtained from the stock cultures and raised individually in 50 mL glass beakers. All daphnids were transfered every other day to a new beaker containing fresh medium, food and the appropriate pesticide concentration. The animals were maintained in an environmental chamber at 22±1°C on a 12L: 12D photoperiod and were fed daily on 5 x 105 cell/mL of the green algae Nannochloris oculata. The parameters used to determine the effect of the pesticide on reproduction were: mean total young per female, mean brood size, mean numb…
Hyperspectral Imaging of Macroinvertebrates : a Pilot Study for Detecting Metal Contamination in Aquatic Ecosystems
2018
The applicability of spectral analysis in detection of freshwater metal contamination was assessed by developing and testing a novel hyperspectral imaging (HSI) application for aquatic insect larvae (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae). Larvae were first exposed to four different cadmium (Cd) concentrations: 0, 1, 10, and 100 μg L−1 for 96 h. Individual larvae were then preserved in ethanol, inspected with microscopy for the number of anomalies in larval gills, and imaged by hyperspectral camera operating with wavebands between 500 and 850 nm. Three additional larvae from each exposure were analyzed for tissue Cd concentration. Although the larval tissue Cd concentrations correlated positively wit…
Polyphenols and Pharmacological Screening of a Monarda fistulosa L. dry Extract Based on a Hydrodistilled Residue By-Product
2021
This study aimed to determine the composition and content of polyphenols in the dry extract obtained from the hydrodistilled residue by-product of the wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa L., Lamiaceae Martinov family) herb (MFDE) and to evaluate its safety and pharmacological properties. The total phenolic content (TPC) in the MFDE was 120.64 mg GAE/g. The high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed the presence of a plethora of phenolic compounds, including hydroxycinnamic acids and flavone derivatives in the MFDE, with rosmarinic acid and luteolin-7-O-glucoside being the main components. With an IC50 value of 0.285 mg/mL, it was found to be a strong DPPH radical scavenger. …
