Pictorial content, sequence of conflicting online reviews and consumer decision-making: the stimulus-organism-response model revisited

2020

Abstract Conflicting online reviews challenge the consumer’s decision-making processes. Furthermore, increase in visual content, both positive and negative, adds complexity. This study analyses conflicting online reviews based on text and photos using automatic processing patterns and conscious perceptions. The study is built on the stimulus-organism-response model revisited by Jacoby (2002), and captures nonlinear eye-tracking data and a questionnaire. A fsQCA analysis suggests that the order of the positive and negative stimuli strongly influence the way respondents perceive the overall meaning of a sequence of online reviews, supporting primacy-recency effects. In addition, the visualiza…

The effect of surface charge on nonspecific uptake and cytotoxicity of CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots

2015

In this work, cytotoxicity and cellular impedance response was compared for CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with positively charged cysteamine–QDs, negatively charged dihydrolipoic acid–QDs and zwitterionic D-penicillamine–QDs exposed to canine kidney MDCKII cells. Pretreatment of cells with pharmacological inhibitors suggested that the uptake of nanoparticles was largely due to receptor-independent pathways or spontaneous entry for carboxylated and zwitterionic QDs, while for amine-functionalized particles involvement of cholesterol-enriched membrane domains is conceivable. Cysteamine–QDs were found to be the least cytotoxic, while D-penicillamine–QDs reduced the mitochondrial activ…

SiPMs coated with TPB: coating protocol and characterization for NEXT

2012

[EN] Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are the photon detectors chosen for the tracking readout in NEXT, a neutrinoless \bb decay experiment which uses a high pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The reconstruction of event track and topology in this gaseous detector is a key handle for background rejection. Among the commercially available sensors that can be used for tracking, SiPMs offer important advantages, mainly high gain, ruggedness, cost-effectiveness and radio-purity. Their main drawback, however, is their non sensitivity in the emission spectrum of the xenon scintillation (peak at 175 nm). This is overcome by coating these sensors with the organic wavelength shifte…

Maximum Power Point Tracker for Standalone PV System Using Neural Networks

2019

In this work, designing and implementation of a maximum power point tracker (MPPT) based on an artificial neural network is proposed. The output voltage of the selected photovoltaic array is controlled by a DC to DC boost converter in a way that the PV array generates the available possible maximum power correspond to the available solar irradiance and temperature. The neural network (NN) is capable of forecasting the required terminal voltage of the PV array in order to generate the possible maximum power. The pulse width modulation (PWM) signal, which drives the boost converter, is generated through a raspberry pi according to the forecasted terminal voltage. The terminal voltage of the P…

Real time estimation of photovoltaic modules characteristics and its application to maximum power point operation

2007

In this paper, an approximate curve fitting method for photovoltaic modules is presented. The operation is based on solving a simple solar cell electrical model by a microcontroller in real time. Only four voltage and current coordinates are needed to obtain the solar module parameters and set its operation at maximum power in any conditions of illumination and temperature. Despite its simplicity, this method is suitable for low cost real time applications, as control loop reference generator in photovoltaic maximum power point circuits. The theory that supports the estimator together with simulations and experimental results are presented.

Attentional biases toward emotional images in the different episodes of bipolar disorder: an eye-tracking study.

2014

Attentional biases toward emotional information may represent vulnerability and maintenance factors in bipolar disorder (BD). The present experimental study examined the processing of emotional information in BD patients using the eye-tracking technology. Bipolar patients in their different states (euthymia, mania, depression) simultaneously viewed four pictures with different emotional valence (happy, neutral, sad, threatening) for 20 s while their eye movements were monitored. A group of healthy individuals served as the control. The data revealed the following: (i) a decrease in attention to happy images in BD patients in their depressive episodes compared to healthy individuals, and (ii…

A music reader has to “look ahead” from the notes currently being played—this has usually been called the Eye-Hand Span. Given the restrictions on processing time due to tempo and meter, the Early Attraction Hypothesis suggests that sight readers are likely to locally increase the span of looking ahead in the face of complex upcoming symbols (or symbol relationships). We argue that such stimulus-driven effects on looking ahead are best studied using a measure of Eye-Time Span (ETS) which redefines looking ahead as the metrical distance between the position of a fixation in the score and another position that corresponds to the point of metrical time at fixation onset. In two experiments of…

Live imaging of stem cell and progeny behaviour in physiological hair-follicle regeneration

2012

Tissue development and regeneration depend on cell-cell interactions and signals that target stem cells and their immediate progeny. However, the cellular behaviours that lead to a properly regenerated tissue are not well understood. Using a new, non-invasive, intravital two-photon imaging approach we study physiological hair-follicle regeneration over time in live mice. By these means we have monitored the behaviour of epithelial stem cells and their progeny during physiological hair regeneration and addressed how the mesenchyme influences their behaviour. Consistent with earlier studies, stem cells are quiescent during the initial stages of hair regeneration, whereas the progeny are more …

Using deep neural networks for kinematic analysis: Challenges and opportunities

2020

Kinematic analysis is often performed in a lab using optical cameras combined with reflective markers.\ud With the advent of artificial intelligence techniques such as deep neural networks, it is now possible\ud to perform such analyses without markers, making outdoor applications feasible. In this paper I summarise\ud 2D markerless approaches for estimating joint angles, highlighting their strengths and limitations.\ud In computer science, so-called ‘‘pose estimation” algorithms have existed for many years. These methods\ud involve training a neural network to detect features (e.g. anatomical landmarks) using a process called\ud supervised learning, which requires ‘‘training” images to be …
