Processing Strategies to Inactivate Hepatitis A Virus in Food Products: A Critical Review
2015
Hepatitis A infection, caused by hepatitis A virus (HAV), is the leading cause of human viral hepatitis throughout the world and is mainly propagated via the fecal–oral route. Transnational outbreaks of food-borne infections are reported with increasing frequency as a consequence of international food trade. Food-borne outbreaks caused by HAV are mainly associated with bivalve molluscs, produce (soft fruits and leafy greens), and ready-to-eat meals. The purpose of this paper was to conduct a structured and systematic review of the published literature on the current state of knowledge regarding the stability of HAV in foods as well as the efficacy of food processing strategies and to identi…

Comparative study of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the United States – Mexico – Canada Agreement: the compromised deal of the free trade
2019
The main objective is to analyze two treaties – the old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), to evidence the similarities and differences between two drafted agreements, and it aims to establish, what new issues shall be considered in drafting the Free Trade Agreements to establish mutually beneficial trade relationships with their trade nations. This thesis presents qualitative research, which to a major extent is based on the comparative historical analysis approach towards analyzing trade issues of NAFTA and the USMCA.
With whom to merge? A tale of the Spanish banking deregulation process
2010
We propose a spatial competition model to study banks’ strategic responses to the asymmetric Spanish geographic deregulation process. We find that once the geographic deregulation process finishes, inter-regional mergers between savings banks are optimal whenever the economies of scale associated to merging activities are low. If there are large gains, then there will be mergers between savings and commercial banks.
The sunset of Gortyn: amphorae in 7th –8th centuries AD
2014
Gortyn (A. Di Vita [ed.] 2000-01), some new contexts, more delimited and reliable, allow us to define better circulation, developments, and local use of amphorae in the last periods of urban life of the Cretan city. Two contexts of the mid-late 7th and late 7th-8th centuries are briefly analysed, coming from different quarters of the town (the Old Agora and the Early Byzantine houses near the “Praetorium”), and resulting from different formative processes, which could represent the circulation trends just before, and in the re-occupation phase after the earthquake that dismembered the Late Roman urban layout at the end of the 7th/early 8th century. They display a variety of imports from tra…
Understanding german fdi in latin america and asia: a comparison of glm estimators
2020
The growth of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in developing countries over the last decade has attracted an intense academic and policy-oriented interest for its determinants. Despite the gravity model being considered a useful tool to approximate bilateral FDI flows, the literature has seen a growing debate in relation to its econometric specification, so that which is the best estimator for the gravity equation is far from conclusive. This paper examines the determinants of German outward FDI in Latin America and Asia for the period 1996-2012 by evaluating the performance of alternative Generalized Linear Model (GLM) estimators. Our findings indicate that Negative Binomial Pseudo Maximum …
Asymmetric trade and agglomeration
2003
We extend the quadratic utility approach by Ottaviano et al. [19] and byBehrens [1] to the range of intermediate values of transport costs in orderto investigate how asymmetric trade affects the regional distribution ofeconomic activities. Asymmetry in trade is an endogenous result of pricecompetition and transport costs: depending on both the spatial distribution offirms and the value of transport costs, only firms located in one of the tworegions can profitably access the foreign market, which gives rise to morecomplex patterns of trade. We show that the unilateral breaking of autarkygives rise to strong agglomeration forces which lead to the absorption of thesmaller regions’ industry. Fu…
