Human smuggling and human trafficking. A normative and criminological outline

2021

Human smuggling and human trafficking are, from a normative point of view, strictly separated but frequently, at a criminological level, they overlap in a tangled-up situation in which it is not easy to separate them. This gap could have serious consequences in the fight against the criminal phenomena. In this brief contribution, I will try to show the extent of this gap and its consequences. Firstly, I will focus on the normative approach on HS and HT. Secondly, I will give a brief criminal outline of the two phenomena. Finally, I will try to underline the inadequacy of the dominating normative point of view.

The dark side of the laws against human trafficking: the need for a new, not exclusively criminal approach in a global world perspective

2014

Human trafficking is a question cannot be solved by a mere criminal law point of view. The dark side of the law is that in reality instead of a punishment against criminals, we have increased the punishment of the irregular or clandestine migrants I.e. The real victims. On the contrary, we need a different loom providing for massive international cooperation and collaboration with the weak and developing countries; we also need to fight the irregular immigration not only with a narrow criminal law or statutory approach, but also in a multidisciplinary way using the instruments offered by private law and European and international law as for instance the consumer protection or competition la…

Human Siglec-10 can bind to vascular adhesion protein-1 and serves as its substrate

2009

AbstractLeukocytes migrate from the blood into areas of inflammation by interacting with various adhesion molecules on endothelial cells. Vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) is a glycoprotein expressed on inflamed endothelium where it plays a dual role: it is both an enzyme that oxidizes primary amines and an adhesin that is involved in leukocyte trafficking to sites of inflammation. Although VAP-1 was identified more than 15 years ago, the counterreceptor(s) for VAP-1 on leukocytes has remained unknown. Here we have identified Siglec-10 as a leukocyte ligand for VAP-1 using phage display screenings. The binding between Siglec-10 and VAP-1 was verified by different adhesion assays, and this…

Chemical profiling of the synthetic cannabinoid MDMB-CHMICA: Identification, assessment, and stability study of synthesis-related impurities in seize…

2019

In this work, the most discriminating synthesis-related impurities found in samples from seizures and controlled synthesis of the synthetic cannabinoid MDMB-CHMICA (methyl (S)-2-(1-(cyclohexylmethyl)-1H-indole-3-carboxamido)-3,3-dimethylbutanoate) were characterized. Based on 61 available powder samples of MDMB-CHMICA, 15 key-impurities were assessed, isolated in larger quantities via flash chromatography and structurally elucidated and characterized via high resolution mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Apart from verifying the relation of the impurities to the major component, the interpretation of their chemical structures with distinct structural elements pro…

Motherhood in the Context of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation

2020

This book discusses motherhood of Nigerian and Romanian women in Italy and Romania, who are human trafficking victims for sexual purposes. It provides a broad gender approach to emerge on the phenomenon of human trafficking with an analytic perspective of all the social, cultural, legal and economic components that play an important role during all phases of motherhood. The book compares the motherhood of these two nationalities within a context of an illegal/legal status in the European territory. It reflects on the used terms of vulnerability, sexual exploitation, victim, resistance and resilience. This book enlightens scholars and students with a broad perspective on this complex phenome…

Exploiting for Care: Trafficking and Abuse in Domestic Work in Italy

2017

ABSTRACTCare workers are now an essential part of reality for many Italian families. Yet, despite advancements in regulating domestic work, abuses are widespread. This article explores why exploitation in domestic work is rarely viewed as such and addressed with policies concerning trafficking and exploitation. I look at the way in which the care issue has been addressed by the Italian state and at the peculiar relationship between employers and domestic workers. Furthermore, I focus on the gaps in policies on trafficking and exploitation. I argue that the interplay of these factors results in the “normalization” of exploitation in domestic work.

L'assistenza umanitaria delle ONG sotto inchiesta

2022

The International Legal Framework on Human Trafficking

2020

Approaching the issue of human trafficking, especially when referring to exploitation for sexual purposes, means dissecting concepts and ‘placing’ ourselves within the current binary scholar debate on exploitation and sex work. This chapter presents a chronological excursus on the several international treaties on the issue of human trafficking, with a particular focus on the concept of sexual exploitation. The author delimitates the concept in order to present a precise definition and exclude potential misconceptions that could mislead the reader, especially when vague concepts are included such as vulnerability and consent. Based on an analysis of the current academic debate, as well as t…

The depletion of nuclear glutathione impairs cell proliferation in 3t3 fibroblasts.

2009

BACKGROUND:Glutathione is considered essential for survival in mammalian cells and yeast but not in prokaryotic cells. The presence of a nuclear pool of glutathione has been demonstrated but its role in cellular proliferation and differentiation is still a matter of debate. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:We have studied proliferation of 3T3 fibroblasts for a period of 5 days. Cells were treated with two well known depleting agents, diethyl maleate (DEM) and buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), and the cellular and nuclear glutathione levels were assessed by analytical and confocal microscopic techniques, respectively. Both agents decreased total cellular glutathione although depletion by BSO was more sustaine…
