Heterozygote advantage and pleiotropy contribute to intraspecific color trait variability

2022

The persistence of intrapopulation phenotypic variation typically requires some form of balancing selection because drift and directional selection eventually erode genetic variation. Heterozygote advantage remains a classic explanation for the maintenance of genetic variation in the face of selection. However, examples of heterozygote advantage, other than those associated with disease resistance, are rather uncommon. Across most of its distribution, males of the aposematic moth Arctia plantaginis have two hindwing phenotypes determined by a heritable one locus-two allele polymorphism (genotypes: WW/Wy = white morph, yy = yellow morph). Using genotyped moths, we show that the presence of o…

Measuring Vulnerability of Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Italy

2019

In recent years, a growing number of forced migrants have travelled to Italy across the Mediterranean Sea. While the number of new arrivals has diminished since 2017, the Italian reception system still struggles to process the high number of applications for international protection. A significant proportion of forced migrants who arrive in Italy end up living in informal settlements, such as occupied buildings, shacks, containers and tented camps. In this study, we assess the vulnerability of asylum seekers and refugees living in informal settlements in Italy, using data from the first nationally representative survey of this population. We compare a count measure of vulnerability with a n…

The relationships between urbanization and bird functional traits across the streetscape

2023

Publisher Copyright: © 2023 The Authors The urbanization process leads to changes in bird communities’ taxonomic and functional compositions. Highly urbanized areas generally exhibit a reduced number of bird species sharing few functional traits. However, most urban bird studies focused on vegetation patches in temperate cities. In this study, we investigate how urban environmental attributes – noise, height of buildings, and urban vegetation characteristics – modulate species occurrences and the distribution of functional traits across the streetscape of a tropical metropolis. We predicted diverse trait-environment relationships, but that highly urbanized contexts (e.g., noisy streets with…

Grit og fysisk aktivitet : Utviklingen av grit ved endring av fysisk aktivitetsnivå blant norske ungdommer: En to-års oppfølgingsstudie

2017

Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap ME516 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 The purpose of the study was to investigate the development of grit due to changes in physical activity in Norwegian youth. In addition, the study wanted to investigate differences in grit based on school type (age) and gender. This longitudinal study is part of a larger project called "The Relevance of Physical Activity Contexts in the Daily Life of Adolescents" (REPAC). The study is based on data from two time points (2014 and 2016). The sample consisted of students from Oslo/Akershus, Østfold and Agder. 1658 (54.4% from first measurement point) students were included in the study. To investigate grit and physical activi…
