Aligned Electric and Magnetic Weyl Fields

2003

We analyze the spacetimes admitting a direction for which the relative electric and magnetic Weyl fields are aligned. We give an invariant characterization of these metrics and study the properties of its Debever null vectors. The directions 'observing' aligned electric and magnetic Weyl fields are obtained for every Petrov type. The results on the no existence of purely magnetic solutions are extended to the wider class having homothetic electric and magnetic Weyl fields.

A covariant determination of the Weyl canonical frames in Petrov type I spacetimes

1997

A covariant algorithm is given to obtain principal 2-forms, Debever null directions and canonical frames associated with Petrov type I Weyl tensors. The relationship between these Weyl elements is explained, and their explicit expressions depending on Weyl invariants are obtained. These results are used to determine a cosmological observer in type I universes, and their usefulness in spacetime intrinsic characterization is shown.

Backlund transformations in 2-D dilaton gravity

1998

We give a B\"acklund transformation connecting a generic 2D dilaton gravity theory to a generally covariant free field theory. This transformation provides an explicit canonical transformation relating both theories.

Schwinger mechanism in linear covariant gauges

2016

In this work we explore the applicability of a special gluon mass generating mechanism in the context of the linear covariant gauges. In particular, the implementation of the Schwinger mechanism in pure Yang-Mills theories hinges crucially on the inclusion of massless bound-state excitations in the fundamental nonperturbative vertices of the theory. The dynamical formation of such excitations is controlled by a homogeneous linear Bethe-Salpeter equation, whose nontrivial solutions have been studied only in the Landau gauge. Here, the form of this integral equation is derived for general values of the gauge-fixing parameter, under a number of simplifying assumptions that reduce the degree of…

Cosmological Perturbations in Renormalization Group Derived Cosmologies

2002

A linear cosmological perturbation theory of an almost homogeneous and isotropic perfect fluid Universe with dynamically evolving Newton constant $G$ and cosmological constant $\Lambda$ is presented. A gauge-invariant formalism is developed by means of the covariant approach, and the acoustic propagation equations governing the evolution of the comoving fractional spatial gradients of the matter density, $G$, and $\Lambda$ are thus obtained. Explicit solutions are discussed in cosmologies where both $G$ and $\Lambda$ vary according to renormalization group equations in the vicinity of a fixed point.

Observable traces of non-metricity: new constraints on metric-affine gravity

2018

Relaxing the Riemannian condition to incorporate geometric quantities such as torsion and non-metricity may allow to explore new physics associated with defects in a hypothetical space-time microstructure. Here we show that non-metricity produces observable effects in quantum fields in the form of 4-fermion contact interactions, thereby allowing us to constrain the scale of non-metricity to be greater than 1 TeV by using results on Bhabha scattering. Our analysis is carried out in the framework of a wide class of theories of gravity in the metric-affine approach. The bound obtained represents an improvement of several orders of magnitude to previous experimental constraints.

Running Newton Constant, Improved Gravitational Actions, and Galaxy Rotation Curves

2004

A renormalization group (RG) improvement of the Einstein-Hilbert action is performed which promotes Newton's constant and the cosmological constant to scalar functions on spacetime. They arise from solutions of an exact RG equation by means of a ``cutoff identification'' which associates RG scales to the points of spacetime. The resulting modified Einstein equations for spherically symmetric, static spacetimes are derived and analyzed in detail. The modifications of the Newtonian limit due to the RG evolution are obtained for the general case. As an application, the viability of a scenario is investigated where strong quantum effects in the infrared cause Newton's constant to grow at large …

Quantum cosmological approach to 2d dilaton gravity

1993

We study the canonical quantization of the induced 2d-gravity and the pure gravity CGHS-model on a closed spatial section. The Wheeler-DeWitt equations are solved in (spatially homogeneous) choices of the internal time variable and the space of solutions is properly truncated to provide the physical Hilbert space. We establish the quantum equivalence of both models and relate the results with the covariant phase-space quantization. We also discuss the relation between the quantum wavefunctions and the classical space-time solutions and propose the wave function representing the ground state.

Yang-Mills two-point functions in linear covariant gauges

2015

In this work we use two different but complementary approaches in order to study the ghost propagator of a pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the linear covariant gauges, focusing on its dependence on the gauge-fixing parameter $\xi$ in the deep infrared. In particular, we first solve the Schwinger-Dyson equation that governs the dynamics of the ghost propagator, using a set of simplifying approximations, and under the crucial assumption that the gluon propagators for $\xi>0$ are infrared finite, as is the case in the Landau gauge $(\xi=0)$. Then we appeal to the Nielsen identities, and express the derivative of the ghost propagator with respect to $\xi$ in terms of certain auxiliary…

Entropy function from toric geometry

2021

It has recently been claimed that a Cardy-like limit of the superconformal index of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM accounts for the entropy function, whose Legendre transform corresponds to the entropy of the holographic dual AdS$_5$ rotating black hole. Here we study this Cardy-like limit for $\mathcal{N}=1$ toric quiver gauge theories, observing that the corresponding entropy function can be interpreted in terms of the toric data. Furthermore, for some families of models, we compute the Legendre transform of the entropy function, comparing with similar results recently discussed in the literature.
