All-cause and disease-specific mortality among male, former elite athletes: an average 50-year follow-up.

Aim To investigate life expectancy and mortality among former elite athletes and controls. Methods HR analysis of cause-specific deaths sourced from the national death registry for former Finnish male endurance, team and power sports athletes (N=2363) and controls (N=1657). The median follow-up time was 50 years. Results Median life expectancy was higher in the endurance (79.1 years, 95% CI 76.6 to 80.6) and team (78.8, 78.1 to 79.8) sports athletes than in controls (72.9, 71.8 to 74.3). Three-year (2014-2016) activity report of the Replantation Service for hand amputations in Poland

W pracy przedstawiono podsumowanie 32 miesięcy działalności Serwisu Replantacyjnego dla amputacji rąk w Polsce od stycznia 2014 roku do sierpnia 2016 roku. W analizowanym czasie zgłoszono łącznie 568 przypadków – amputacji, częściowych amputacji i innych rozległych urazów kończyn górnych, z czego zaakceptowano 354 przypadki (62%), a odrzucono 214 (38%). Wśród 354 wszystkich zaakceptowanych przypadków znalazło się 167 całkowitych amputacji (47%), 142 amputacji niecałkowitych (40%) i 45 (13%) innych ciężkich urazów, które zagrażały utratą kończyny. Influence of the level of arterial resection on the replanting and revascularization results in hand surgery: prospective study over 22 months

Abstract The objective of this work was to assess whether the injury mechanisms are responsible for histological arterial lesions. This prospective single-center study included adults with wrist or hand arterial injury. Arterial resection of at least 2 mm from the proximal and distal stumps was performed before the arterial anastomosis. Histological analysis of the arterial stumps was performed. An ultrasound was performed 1 month postoperatively to check arterial patency. A clinical and functional evaluation was done at 1 month postoperative, then every 3 months. Ketamine in acute phase of severe traumatic brain injury “an old drug for new uses?”

AbstractMaintaining an adequate level of sedation and analgesia plays a key role in the management of traumatic brain injury (TBI). To date, it is unclear which drug or combination of drugs is most effective in achieving these goals. Ketamine is an agent with attractive pharmacological and pharmacokinetics characteristics. Current evidence shows that ketamine does not increase and may instead decrease intracranial pressure, and its safety profile makes it a reliable tool in the prehospital environment. In this point of view, we discuss different aspects of the use of ketamine in the acute phase of TBI, with its potential benefits and pitfalls.
