Masennus on kansainvälisesti yksi merkittävimmistä toimintakykyä heikentävistä sairauksista. Masennusoireet lisäävät merkittävästi riskiä sairastua masennukseen. Ainoastaan vähemmistön masennuksesta kärsivistä on todettu hakevan apua sairauteen ja hoitoa haetaan sitä todennäköisemmin, mitä vaikeampi ja pitkäkestoisempi masennustila on, ja mitä suurempi siihen liittyvä koettu toimintakyvyn heikkeneminen on.
