Antiepileptic drug use in nursing home residents: a cross-sectional, regional study.
2006
Summary The use of antiepileptic drugs (AED), their primary indication, comorbid conditions, and concomitant medications were collected from 565 nursing homes (NH) residents of six NH located around the city of Mainz, Germany representing 5.05% of all NH residents in the area. Data were collected from the electronic pharmacy files and by reviewing all available medical records. Average age was 82.2±2.4 years, 85.5% were women. Of 565 NH residents 28 (4.96%) received AED therapy, of which in 17 (63%) AED were prescribed for a seizure-related diagnosis. In 76.5% seizure types were unspecified and a distinction in focal and generalized epilepsy was made in only 23.5% of patients. Three patient…
Survey of neonatal respiratory care and surfactant administration in very preterm infants in the Italian neonatal network
2013
INTRODUCTION: Variation of respiratory care is described between centers around the world. The Italian Neonatal Network (INN), as a national group of the Vermont-Oxford Network (VON) allows to perform a wide analysis of respiratory care in very low birth weight infants. METHODS: We analyzed the dataset of infants enrolled in the INN in 2009 and 2010 and, for surfactant administration only, from 2006 to 2010 from 83 participating centers. All definitions are those of the (VON). A questionnaire analysis was also performed with a questionnaire on centers practices. RESULTS: We report data for 8297 infants. Data on ventilator practices and outcomes are outlined. Variation for both practices and…

Fumarate dependent protein composition under aerobic and anaerobic growth conditions in Escherichia coli
2020
Abstract In the absence of sugars, C4-dicarboxylates (C4DC) like fumarate represent important substrates for growth of Escherichia coli. Aerobically, C4DCs are oxidized to CO2 whereas anaerobically, C4DCs are used for fumarate respiration. In order to determine the impact of fumarate under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, proteomes of E. coli W3110 grown aerobically or anaerobically with fumarate and/or the non-C4DC substrate glycerol were comparatively profiled by nanoLC-MS/MS. Membrane enrichment allowed sensitive detection of membrane proteins. A total of 1657 proteins of which 646 and 374 were assigned to the cytosol or membrane, respectively, were covered. Presence of fumarate trigger…
Differential proteomic analysis of an engineered Streptomyces coelicolor strain reveals metabolic pathways supporting growth on n-hexadecane
2012
The alkB gene, encoding an alkane monooxygenase in the actinomycete Gordonia sp. SoCg, was expressed in the non-alkane-degrading actinomycete Streptomyces coelicolor M145. The resulting engineered strain, M145-AH, can grow on n-hexadecane as sole carbon source. To unravel proteins associated with growth on n-alkanes, proteome of M145-AH after 6, 24, and 48 h of incubation in the Bushnell-Haas (BH) mineral medium containing n-hexadecane as sole carbon source (H condition) and in BH without any carbon source (0 condition) were compared using 2D-differential gel electrophoresis. Proteome analysis revealed significant changes only at 48 h, showing 48 differentially abundant proteins identified …

A data analysis approach to evaluate the impact of the capacity utilization on the energy consumption of wastewater treatment plants
2019
Abstract The reduction of energy consumption in Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) is a challenge for the scientific community and for the public authorities. A source of excessive energy cost is the mismatching between operational and design inflow (i.e. capacity utilization): this issue is very relevant above all in areas with high demographic seasonality. Consequently, it is really important to have operational decision criteria to evaluate the impact of a low capacity utilization on energy consumption. In order to provide the scientific community and the plant managers with an adequate criterion, we propose a user-friendly methodology to identify critical conditions of capacity utiliz…
Surgeon volume and hospital volume in endocrine neck surgery: how many procedures are needed for reaching a safety level and acceptable costs? A syst…
2018
The relationship between quality of care and provider's experience is well known in all fields of surgery. Even in thyroidectomies and parathyroidectomies, the emphasis on positive volume-outcome relationships is believed. It led us to an evaluation of volume activity's impact in terms of quality of care. A systematic narrative review was performed. According to the PRISMA criteria, we selected 87 paper and, after the study selection was performed, 22 studies were finally included in this review. All articles included were unanimous in attributing to activity volume of surgeons as well as centers a substantial importance. Some differences in outcomes between these investigated categories ha…
The use of low molecular weight heparin in a Sicilian teaching hospital
2013
LMWH are replacing unfractionated heparin (UFH) for therapeutic anticoagulation owing to their more predictable pharmacokinetics and ease of use. Especially in Sicily, their prescription volume is steadily increasing in general practice, but little is known about their use in the hospital setting. We investigated LMWH use at the Policlinico Universitario P. Giaccone of Palermo by examining the records of drug dispensation to the wards in the years 2010-2012. From 2010 to 2012 the use of LMWH at Policlinico of Palermo remained stable with a mean of 71 DDD/100 bed days (range 69-73) of drugs dispensed. Enoxaparin, nadroparin and reviparin were the most prescribed molecules, accounting each on…
Aspects and problems of changing economic utilization of the land in Italy and the corresponding soil consumption
2013
The study moves from the observation that, in the last fifty years (1961-2010) the territory of our country, like those of other countries with advanced economies, has undergone extensive economic processes of change in the use of land, mostly due to a strong reduction of Agricultural Area Use (AAU), whose consistency - on the basis of official statistics (National Statistics Institute) and, in particular, the results of the General Census of Agriculture - is estimated at around 7,8 million hectares, from 20, 7 million hectares in 1961 to 12,9 million in 2010. It should be noted in fact that the intensity of the processes of reduction of the UAA was much greater in the first three decades, …
