Non-classic cystic fibrosis associated with D1152H CFTR mutation. Background: Limited knowledge exists on phenotypes associated with the D1152H cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) mutation. Methods: Subjects with a D1152H allele in trans with another CFTR mutation were identified using the French Cystic Fibrosis Registry. Phenotypic characteristics were compared with those of pancreatic insufficient (PI) and pancreatic sufficient (PS) cystic fibrosis (CF)…
Diagnostic performance of gadobenate dimeglumine enhanced MR angiography of the iliofemoral and calf arteries: a large-scale multicenter trial
2007
OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to compare gadobenate dimeglumine–enhanced MR angiography and unenhanced time-of-flight MR angiography for the detection of significant peripheral arterial occlusive disease using digital subtraction angiography as our reference standard. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Two hundred seventy-two patients underwent MR angiography and digital subtraction angiography of the iliofemoral arteries. MR angiography was performed before (2D time-of-flight acquisitions) and after (spoiled gradient-echo acquisitions) the administration of 0.1 mmol/kg of gadobenate dimeglumine at 1–2 mL/s. Contrast-enhanced MR angiography and digital subtraction angiography of the calf arte…
Intra- and extracerebral blood flow changes and flushing after intravenous injection of human corticotropin-releasing hormone
1994
To study facial flush after systemic administration of human corticotropin-releasing hormone (hCRH) we injected 100 micrograms hCRH intravenously to ten healthy young men. The increase in facial temperature was measured by infrared camera. A significant increase in facial temperature of 1.39 degrees C +/- 0.3 was found within 7 min in all patients, which lasted up to 60 min, although facial flushing was visible in only 50% (5/10) of the probands. In a second experiment 100 micrograms hCRH was then administered to seven other healthy young men. Intra- and extracerebral blood flow velocity changes in the medial cerebral artery (MCA) and external carotid artery (ECA) were measured after hCRH a…
Treatment and its side effects in ANCA-associated vasculitides - Study based on POLVAS registry data.
2020
Abstract Purpose The aim of this study is to present the treatment modalities and associated side effects in a Polish nation-wide ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV) patients’ cohort. Materials and methods Retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with AAV between 1990 and 2016, included in the POLVAS registry was performed. Standard descriptive statistic methods were used with an emphasis on the treatment modalities. Results There were 625 patients diagnosed with AAV included in this study: 417 cases of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA; 66.7%), 106 cases of microscopic polyangiitis (MPA; 17.0%) and 102 cases of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA; 16.3%). The mean ag…
Elevated monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 serum levels in patients at risk for coronary artery disease.
2005
Background Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) is involved in the recruitment of monocytes into the arterial vessel wall as one of the major events leading to atherosclerotic vascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods and Results The study group comprised 263 volunteers aged between 18 and 85 years who were admitted to hospital or clinic for scheduled invasive and non-invasive diagnostic procedures. MCP-1 serum levels were determined using a sandwich-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In each patient, the coronary risk factors (CRF), such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, obesity, positive family history, and smoking were evaluated. Low-dens…
Interferon- and ribavirin-free therapy with new direct acting antivirals (DAA) for chronic hepatitis C improves vascular endothelial function.
2018
Abstract Introduction Chronic Hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) is associated with extrahepatic manifestations and an increased prevalence in cardiovascular disease. New direct acting antivirals (DAA) have revolutionized HCV treatment with high rates of sustained virological response (SVR). Recently it was demonstrated, that SVR reduces morbidity and overall mortality more than can be solely explained by hepatic effects, suggesting that treatment with DAA also affects cardiovascular disease. The aim of this pilot study was to identify possible underlying mechanisms behind the HCV-associated cardiovascular mortality reported by others. Methods and results 20 HCV patients (10 genotype GT1, 10…
Testosterone administration increases leukocyte-endothelium interactions and inflammation in transgender men
2021
Objective To evaluate the effect of testosterone treatment on metabolic and inflammation parameters and leukocyte-endothelium interactions in transgender men (TGM). Design Prospective observational study. Setting University hospital. Patient(s) One hundred fifty-seven TGM. Intervention(s) Administration of testosterone undecanoate (1,000 mg, intramuscular) every 12 weeks. Main Outcome Measure(s) Endocrine parameters, adhesion molecules (vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1, and E-selectin), proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha were evaluated in serum before and after treatment using Luminex’s xMAP technology. In additi…
Tolerance to nitroglycerin-induced preconditioning of the endothelium: a human in vivo study
2009
Damage and dysfunction of the vascular endothelium critically influence clinical outcomes after ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Brief exposure to organic nitrates can protect the vascular endothelium from I/R injury via a mechanism that is similar to ischemic preconditioning and is independent of hemodynamic changes. The clinical relevance of these protective effects clearly depends on whether they can be sustained over time. Twenty-four healthy (age 25–32) male volunteers were randomized to receive 1) transdermal nitroglycerin (GTN; 0.6 mg/h) administered for 2 h on 1 day only, 2) transdermal GTN for 2 h/day for 7 days, or 3) continuous therapy with transdermal GTN for 7 days. Eight volunt…
Coadministration of atorvastatin prevents nitroglycerin-induced endothelial dysfunction and nitrate tolerance in healthy humans.
2010
Objectives We aimed to assess whether concurrent administration of atorvastatin would modify the development of tolerance and endothelial dysfunction associated with sustained nitroglycerin (GTN) therapy in humans. Background Animal studies have demonstrated that administration of 3-hydroxy-3 methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors can protect against GTN-induced endothelial dysfunction and tolerance, likely through an antioxidant mechanism. Methods Thirty-six healthy male volunteers were randomized to receive continuous transdermal GTN (0.6 mg/h) and placebo, atorvastatin (80 mg/day) alone, or continuous transdermal GTN (0.6 mg/h) with concurrent atorvastatin (80 mg/day), all for 7 …
Genetic, andrological and clinical characteristics of patients with congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens
2001
Summary The possibility of retrieving spermatozoa from the epididymis allows patients with congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) to father a child by means of assisted reproduction techniques. This has, however, increased the chance of transmitting a mutated allele of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene which increases the risk of generating offspring with cystic fibrosis (CF). Because of the increased heterogeneity of the CFTR locus, the study of a discrete number of mutations, as usually carried out in a diagnostic work-up, is unable to ascertain the presence of a mutation in a relatively high proportion of the patients screened. In an at…
