Structural dissimilarities in different regions of the pineal gland of Pirbright white guinea-pigs.

In the present study, the proximal, intermediate and distal parts of dumbbell-shaped pineal glands of Pirbright White guinea-pigs were investigated with respect to structural dissimilarities. The most conspicuous difference was that while in the proximal part the pinealocytes were arranged in a random fashion, the intermediate and distal regions, except a small ventral area in the latter, exhibited a prominent follicular arrangement of the pinealocytes. Concretions were restricted to the subcapsular region of the intermediate part, whereas cells with hyperchromatic nuclei increased in number in an anterior-posterior direction. A genetic variant of the atrial natriuretic peptide gene is associated with cardiometabolic protection in the general community

Objectives We sought to define the cardiometabolic phenotype associated with rs5068, a genetic variant of the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) gene. Background The ANP and B-type natriuretic peptide play an important role in cardiorenal homeostasis but also exert metabolic actions. Methods We genotyped 1,608 randomly selected residents from Olmsted County, Minnesota. Subjects were well-characterized. Results Genotype frequencies were: AA 89.9%, AG 9.7%, and GG 0.4%; all subsequent analyses were AA versus AG+GG. Effect of observer experience in the differentiation between benign and malignant liver tumors after ultrasound contrast agent injection.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the observer level of experience on the diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging (CEUS) for differentiation between benign and malignant liver tumors. Reproducible coronary plaque quantification by multislice computed tomography

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate reproducibility and accuracy of computer-assisted coronary plaque measurements by multislice computed tomography coronary angiography (QMSCT-CA). METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-eight patients undergoing MSCT-CA and coronary arteriography for symptomatic coronary artery disease and quantitative intravascular ultrasound (IVUS, QCU) were examined. Does mismatch negativity show differences in reading-disabled children compared to normal children and children with attention deficit?

An auditory event-related potential (ERP) component called mismatch negativity (MMN) was examined in three groups of children (n = 63) aged 8-14 years. A control group comprised healthy children in second or sixth grade of comprehensive school (n = 21). The two clinical groups included children with reading disability (RD) (n = 21) and children with attention deficit (AD) (n = 21). MMN was elicited in a passive oddball paradigm by duration changes in a continuous sound, consisting of two alternating (600 and 800 Hz) 100 msec tones. Secular trends towards earlier puberty, possibly caused by new environmental triggers, provide a basis for periodic evaluation of the influence and interaction of genetic and environmental effects on pubertal timing. In such studies, a practical marker that reflects timing of puberty in both genders needs to be used. We investigated genetic and environmental influences on pubertal timing by using change in the relative height between early and late adolescence (HD:SDS, height difference in standard deviations) as a new marker of pubertal timing. Fast measurement of auditory event-related potential profiles in 2–3-year-olds

Auditory discrimination, memory, and attention-related functions were investigated in healthy 2-3-year-olds by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) to changes in five auditory features and two types of novel sounds using the fast multifeature paradigm (MFP). ERP profiles consisting of the mismatch negativity (MMN), P3a, and prominent late discriminative negativities (LDN) were obtained, for the first time, from this age group in a considerably shorter time compared to the traditional paradigms.
