Two positive solutions for a nonlinear parameter-depending algebraic system

2021

The existence of two positive solutions for a nonlinear parameter-depending algebraic system is investigated. The main tools are a finite dimensional version of a two critical point theorem and a recent weak-strong discrete maximum principle.

Taking it a tad further : comparing English and Swedish course materials in terms of presenting prosody and accent variation

2011

Tämän tutkimuksen aiheena on prosodian ja aksenttivariaatioiden esiintyminen lukion englannin ja ruotsin oppikirjamateriaaleissa. Ääntämisen opetusta ja osaamista on koulutuksen piirissä ensisijaisesti tutkittu segmentaalien näkökulmaa painottaen, vaikka nimenomaisesti prosodisten ainesten on todettu vaikuttavan puheen ymmärrettävyyteen segmentaalitarkkuutta enemmän.

Determinants of the interannual relationships between remote sensed photosynthetic activity and rainfall in tropical Africa

2007

International audience; The response of photosynthetic activity to interannual rainfall variations in Africa South of the Sahara is examined using 20 years (1981-2000) of Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) AVHRR data. Linear correlations and regressions were computed between annual NDVI and annual rainfall at a 0.5° latitude/longitude resolution, based on two gridded precipitation datasets (Climate Prediction Center Merged Analysis of Precipitation [CMAP] and Climatic Research Unit [CRU]). The spatial patterns were then examined to detect how they relate to the mean annual rainfall amounts, land-cover types as from the Global Land Cover 2000 data set, soil properties and soil typ…

Register Variation in Electronic Business Correspondence

2011

Electronic correspondence is a highly dynamic genre within the business world in which Register Variation (RV) is frequently used as a tool to improve communication but it often can lead to misunderstanding. In order to shed some light on this still unexplored area, the present study firstly offers a practical approach to classify and analyse RV within professional communication. After this, it reviews previous studies on email writing to apply their findings to this approach and, in the third part of the study, a corpus of recent business emails in English is analysed to examine how the key parameters of RV are currently used within this genre. The results will show that, not only the cont…

Verb-Second and (micro)-variation in two Rhaeto-Romance varieties of Northern Italy.

2018

Rhaeto-Romance varieties are the only present-day Romance varieties which exhibit the Verb Second constraint (Benincà 1994, Poletto 2002, Salvi 2010). In this chapter we examine two properties typically ascribed to the Verb Second phenomenon, subject-finite verb inversion and restrictions on the co-occurrence of multiple constituents in the sentence-initial position, in two Rhaeto-Romance varieties spoken in South Tyrol (Province of Bolzano, Northern Italy). We demonstrate that both varieties behave like Verb-Second languages as far as both phenomena are concerned, but exhibit a specific Verb-Second system governed by the interplay between syntactic and discourse constraints which differs f…

The evolution and ecology of multiple antipredator defences

2023

Prey seldom rely on a single type of antipredator defence, often using multiple defences to avoid predation. In many cases, selection in different contexts may favour the evolution of multiple defences in a prey. However, a prey may use multiple defences to protect itself during a single predator encounter. Such “defence portfolios” that defend prey against a single instance of predation are distributed across and within successive stages of the predation sequence (encounter, detection, identification, approach (attack), subjugation and consumption). We contend that at present, our understanding of defence portfolio evolution is incomplete, and seen from the fragmentary perspective of speci…

Seasonal variations in endurance performance, and aerobic and anaerobic variables in competitive cross country skiers

2016

Cross country skiing is known as an endurance sport and both aerobic and anaerobic systems have a major impact on performance in cross country skiers. Coaches and athletes use periodized training programs to optimize physiological adaptations and increase performance. Knowing how the major aerobic and anaerobic variables change during the course of one ski season will allow better implementation of training programs. This study examined variations in endurance performance, and how that relates to the variation in different aerobic and anaerobic variables. There were 19 subjects in the study, 11 male and 8 female. All subjects were competitive cross country skiers. The study took place over …

Sequential infection can decrease virulence in a fish-bacterium-fluke interaction: Implications for aquaculture disease management.

2018

Abstract Hosts are typically infected with multiple strains or genotypes of one or several parasite species. These infections can take place simultaneously, but also at different times, i.e. sequentially, when one of the parasites establishes first. Sequential parasite dynamics are common in nature, but also in intensive farming units such as aquaculture. However, knowledge of effects of previous exposures on virulence of current infections in intensive farming is very limited. This is critical as consecutive epidemics and infection history of a host could underlie failures in management practices and medical intervention of diseases. Here, we explored effects of timing of multiple infectio…
