Diel Feeding Features of Juveniles of Two Sparids in the Stagnone di Marsala Coastal Sound (Western Sicily, Italy)

2001

Diet composition, feeding rhythms, gastric evacuation rates, daily rations of Diplodus puntazzo (Gmelin 1789) and Sarpa salpa (Linneo 1758) juveniles were studied in order to investigate their trophic ecology, niche breadth and overlap. These Sparids were collected in the Stagnone di Marsala (Western Sicily), in April 1997, in a 24 hour sampling period. Gastric content of 86 specimens of D. puntazzo (standard length = 31.9 ± 6.6 mm; body wet weight = 1.0 Ī 0.5 g) and of 100 specimens of S. salpa (standard length = 32.3 ± 2.9 mm; body wet weight = 0.6 Ī 0.2 g) were examined. Amphipoda and Tanaidacea were the most frequent prey items in stomach content of D. puntozzo, while Hydrozoa, Bryozoa …

Measuring magnitude and rate of vertical movements in the offshore Capo Vaticano (W Calabria) using lowstand coastal prisms and wave-built terraces

2012

The magnitude and rate of vertical movements have been measured in the offshore Capo Vaticano (western Calabria) for the Late Pleistocene - Holocene on the basis of the depth of submerged coastal prism and associated wave-built terrace formed during the sea-level lowstand of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Uplifted and submerged terraces have proved to be valuable recorders of vertical motion in many locations around the world (e.g. DICKINSON, 2001; WEBSTER et alii, 2004) as the depth of their tops appear to be controlled by the sea-level. In the eastern Tyrrhenian margins, depending on the hydraulic energy conditions (i.e. waves and wind-induced currents), the average water depth of terrac…

SISTEMI VERDI COME CULTURA RIGENERATIVA: STRUMENTI E TECNOLOGIE

2021

The study analyzes and proposes in the historical and in the area immediately to it adjacent, the "values-nature" of the buildings through the creation of gardens wall and vertical gardens in the elevatiloy of non-monumental buildings. The study deepens in particular the specificity of the garden roof and the garden vertical, recognizing benefits and critical issues that distinguish these green systems for construction. It also deepens the concept of resilience in close relationship sustainability and regenerative design applied to the built environment. The theme of regenerative design is studied and promoted as an adaptive strategy at the design stage; it requires you to leave nature stre…

Settore ICAR/12 - Tecnologia Dell'Architettura

Maternal antibodies contribute to sex-based difference in hantavirus transmission dynamics

2013

Individuals often differ in their ability to transmit disease and identifying key individuals for transmission is a major issue in epidemiology. Male hosts are often thought to be more important than females for parasite transmission and persistence. However, the role of infectious females, particularly the transient immunity provided to offspring through maternal antibodies (MatAbs), has been neglected in discussions about sex-biased infection transmission. We examined the effect of host sex upon infection dynamics of zoonotic Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) in semi-natural, experimental populations of bank vole ( Myodes glareolus ). Populations were founded with either females or males that we…

Effectiveness of a project to prevent HIV vertical transmission in the Republic of Congo

2013

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of a prevention programme against the vertical transmission of HIV in a resource-limited setting and to investigate variables associated with compliance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Kento-Mwana project (2005-2008) provided counselling, serological and biomolecular testing and prophylaxis/therapy to HIV-positive pregnant women and their children attending four antenatal clinics in Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo. Expected and actual rates of vertical transmission of HIV were compared. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed in order to identify variables associated with non-compliance. RESULTS: The observed transmission rate in the group wh…

Coexistence of three microsporidia parasites in populations of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus roeseli: evidence for vertical transmission and posit…

2004

We investigated the prevalence, transmission mode and fitness effects of infections by obligatory intracellular, microsporidian parasites in the freshwater amphipod Gammarus roeseli. We found three different microsporidia species in this host, all using transovarial (vertical) transmission. All three coexist at different prevalences in two host populations, but bi-infected individuals were rarely found, suggesting no (or very little) horizontal transmission. It is predicted that vertically-transmitted parasites may exhibit sex-specific virulence in their hosts, or they may have either positive or neutral effects on host fitness. All three species differed in their transmission efficiency an…

Epidemiological profile of 806 Italian children with hepatitis C virus infection over a 15-year period

2007

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The natural course of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in children is not well understood. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term course of CHC in a large sample of otherwise healthy children. METHODS: From 1990 to 2005, 504 consecutive antihepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive children were enrolled at 12 centers of a national observatory and were followed up retrospectively/prospectively. RESULTS: Putative exposure was perinatal in 283 (56.2%) cases, parenteral in 158 (31.3%), and unknown in 63 (12.5%). At baseline, 477 (94.6%) cases were HCV RNA seropositive, 118 (24.7%) of which were treated with standard interferon alpha. Ten years after putative exposure, the out…

The middle house or the middle floor: Bisecting horizontal and vertical mental number lines in neglect

2007

Abstract This study explores the processing of mental number lines and physical lines in five patients with left unilateral neglect. Three tasks were used: mental number bisection (‘report the middle number between two numbers’), physical line bisection (‘mark the middle of a line’), and a landmark task (‘is the mark on the line to the left/right or higher/lower than the middle of the line?’). We manipulated the number line orientation purely by task instruction: neglect patients were told that the number-pairs represented either houses on a street (horizontal condition) or floors in a building (vertical condition). We also manipulated physical line orientation for comparison. All five negl…

The time course of face matching for featural and relational image manipulations

2011

It was found recently that horizontal and vertical relationships of facial features are differently vulnerable to inversion (Goffaux & Rossion, 2007). When faces are upside down manipulations of vertical relations are difficult to detect, while only moderate performance deficits are found for manipulations of horizontal relations, or when features differ. We replicate the findings of Goffaux and Rossion, and record the temporal courses of face matching performance and the effects of inversion. For vertical relations and featural changes inversion effects arise immediately, starting with the first 50 ms of processing. For horizontal relations inversion effects are absent at brief timings, bu…
