Vibration control of a base-isolated building using wavelets

Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.3182/20110828-6-IT-1002.03169 This paper proposes a numerical approach for finding an optimal control based on wavelet functions for vibration reduction of a base-isolated building subjected to actual earthquakes. The objective is two-fold: (1) to find a computational method using properties of Haar functions, and (2) to calculate controller gains approximately by solving only algebraic equations instead of solving the Riccati differential. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.

This chapter describes a successful application of spline-based wavelet packet transforms (WPTs) described in Chap. 4 to a complicated problem of detection of incipient defects in rolling element bearings by the analysis of recorded vibration signals. The methodology presented in this chapter is applied to the analysis of vibration data recorded from large bearings working in real unfavorable operation conditions in presence of strong noise and vibrations from multiple internal and external sources. The aim of the paper is to determine whether or not the volatility of the growth rate of US output has changed in the period since late 1940's, and to attribute a precise date, if possible, to any such change. By applying the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to the annualized quarter-to quarter output growth series, we can test the homogeneity of the variance on a scale by scale basis without needing to fit a parametric model to the observed time series. A multiscale method for gamma/h discrimination in extensive air showers

We present a new method for the identification of extensive air showers initiated by different primaries. The method uses the multiscale concept and is based on the analysis of multifractal behaviour and lacunarity of secondary particle distributions together with a properly designed and trained artificial neural network. The separation technique is particularly suited for being applied when the topology of the particle distribution in the shower front is as largely detailed as possible. The electroretinogram is the record of the electrical response of the retina to a light stimulus. The two main components are the a-wave and the b-wave, the former is related to the early photoreceptoral activity. Aim of this paper is to acquire useful information about the time-frequency features of the human a-wave, by means of the wavelet analysis. International audience; In this paper, a new method based on the continuous wavelet transform is described in order to detect the QRS, P and T waves. QRS, P and T waves may be distinguished from noise, baseline drift or irregular heartbeats. The algorithm, described in this paper, has been evaluated using the Computers in Cardiology (CinC) Challenge 2011 database and also applied on the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database (MITDB). We have developed an integrated system permitting the simultaneous acquisition of the 3D shape and the spectral spectral reflectance of scanned object surfaces. We call this system a 3D multispectral scanner because it combines within a stereopair, a multispectral video camera and a structured light projector. Three-dimensional object recognition by Fourier transform profilometry

An automatic method for three-dimensional (3-D) shape recognition is proposed. It combines the Fourier transform profilometry technique with a real-time recognition setup such as the joint transform correlator (JTC). A grating is projected onto the object surface resulting in a distorted grating pattern. Since this pattern carries information about the depth and the shape of the object, their comparison provides a method for recognizing 3-D objects in real time. A two-cycle JTC is used for this purpose. Experimental results demonstrate the theory and show the utility of the new proposed method.
