Time flies when you maximize - Maximizers and satisficers perceive time differently when making decisions

2013

Three experiments assessed whether maximizing and satisficing decision-making types were associated with differences in perception of time, as a consequence of their different cognitive workloads. Findings showed that maximizers and satisficers perceived time differently during decision-making, but not during other tasks. In particular, compared to satisficers, maximizers tended to underestimate time while choosing, independently of the number of options and the specific task requirements. Satisficers instead tended to underestimate time only when the number of options or the task requirements were more challenging. Our findings suggest that the perception of time may serve as a measure of …

Burnout in Cardiac Anesthesiologists: Results From a National Survey in Italy

2018

Objective There is increasing burnout incidence among medical disciplines, and physicians working in emergency settings seem at higher risk. Cardiac anesthesiology is a stressful anesthesiology subspecialty dealing with high-risk patients. The authors hypothesized a high risk of burnout in cardiac anesthesiologists. Design National survey conducted on burnout. Setting Italian cardiac centers. Participants Cardiac anesthesiologists. Interventions The authors administered via email an anonymous questionnaire divided into 3 parts. The first 2 parts evaluated workload and private life. The third part consisted of the Maslach Burnout Inventory test with its 3 constituents: high emotional exhaust…

Estimating brain load from the EEG.

2009

Modern work requires cognitively demanding multitasking and the need for sustained vigilance, which may result in work-related stress and may increase the possibility of human error. Objective methods for estimating cognitive overload and mental fatigue of the brain on-line, during work performance, are needed. We present a two-channel electroencephalography (EEG)–based index, theta Fz/alpha Pz ratio, potentially implementable into a compact wearable device. The index reacts to both acute external and cumulative internal load. The index increased with the number of tasks to be performed concurrently (p= 0.004) and with increased time awake, both after normal sleep (p= 0.002) and sleep restr…

A study of temporal estimation from the perspective of the Mental Clock Model.

2009

M. Cardaci's (2000) Mental Clock Model maintains that a task requiring a low mental workload is associated with an acceleration of perceived time, whereas a task requiring a high mental workload is associated with a deceleration. The authors examined the predictions of this model in a musical listening condition in which musical pieces were audible in several structural complexities. To measure the effects of musical complexity on time estimation, the authors used retrospective and prospective time-estimation paradigms. For the retrospective paradigm, the authors invited participants to listen to a musical piece and then estimate its duration. For the prospective paradigm, the authors invit…

Academic Workload, Well-Being and Workaholism in Italian Universities

2017

As suggested by Romainville (1996), universities are the only organizations focussed on dual core functions of knowledge creation and knowledge transmission through the processes of research and teaching. University academic staff do complex work in an increasingly demanding environment, so the workaholism risk seems to be higher than in other professions. Although this type of work behavior seems to be culturally approved by the academic community, it constitutes an element of risk for the health and well being of those who have chosen this type of profession on the basis of different expectations, especially in pace, amount, and independence at work. A very interesting line of research (w…

Evaluation of Student Teachers’ Perceived Quantitative Workload and Usefulness of an On-line Elementary Science Education Course Unit

2022

We have designed a 1 ECTS on-line science pedagogy unit as a part of a 6 ECTS science education course for elementary school student teachers. To improve the unit, we asked 169 participants to estimate their use of time and the usefulness of the themes and contents in it. We analysed the responses in the framework of students’ perceived workload. The Basics of School Science was perceived as the most useful section, followed by Science Teaching and Learning Methods and Basics of Science and Scientific Knowledge in Schools, respectively. This in mind, we discuss the rescaling of the workload and the respective weights student perception and teacher expertise should have in the process. peerR…
