Chances and Problems of Cultural Anthropological Perspectives in Ancient Studies. Theories – Methods – Case Studies

2020

The Distant Worlds Journal (DWJ) is an online peer-reviewed journal established especially for presenting the research of early-career scholars on the ancient world. Each edition of the DWJ centres on a specific question or topic pertinent to the diverse disciplines engaged in the study of ancient cultures. In our fourth edition, we explore cultural anthropological theories and methods in the ancient studies, both in terms of the opportunities they offer for the study of ancient cultures and the problems they pose when applied.

The Arab - Norman civil architecture in Palermo: enhancement strategies

2013

This contribution aims to deepen the knowledge of a historical and artistic heritage of the city of Palermo, i.e. the Arab-Norman civil architecture, yet not adequately utilized, despite its importance as a World Heritage Site'. Within the three royal parks (the Old, the New and the Genoardo), the Norman kings built the palaces of Maredolce, Zisa, Cuba and Scibene, always accompanied by water, both as a lake or as a fishpond, whose purpose was primarily hedonistic as well as productive. The transmission of the architectural heritage to the future presupposes its promotion through the creation of an appropriate strategy helping to spread its knowledge and enjoyment. For example, Sicily has f…

Carbonates from the ancient world's longest aqueduct:A testament of Byzantine water management

2021

The fourth‐ and fifth‐century aqueduct system of Constantinople is, at 426 km, the longest water supply line of the ancient world. Carbonate deposits in the aqueduct system provide an archive of both archaeological developments and palaeo‐environmental conditions during the depositional period. The 246‐km‐long aqueduct line from the fourth century used springs from a small aquifer, whereas a 180‐km‐long fifth‐century extension to the west tapped a larger aquifer. Although historical records testify at least 700 years of aqueduct activity, carbonate deposits in the aqueduct system display less than 27 years of operation. This implies that the entire system must have been cleaned of carbonate…

Ensuring the Conservative Process: The Roman Walls of Lugo Maintenance Plan

2016

In 2000 the walls of Lugo were added to the World Heritage List. In the Spanish scenario of UNESCO Sites this is the only one provided with a maintenance plan, which properly defines times for inspections and interventions, tools for the collection and management of data, human and financial resources. This plan has begun to ensure a conservation process which guarantees that this ancient artefact is used efficiently and safely over time. The walls are fully accessible and because of the dominant ramparts are used by citizens as a beloved and frequently used city park. This article aims to describe the strategy and the conservation process put in place on the Roman walls to preserve and kee…

Understanding social behavior evolutions through agent-based modeling

2012

Agent-based social simulation as a computational approach to social simulation has been largely used to explore social phenomena. The purpose of this paper is to describe a theoretical model of transmission and evolution of social behaviors in a network of artificial societies (artificial world) using agent-based modeling technology. In this model, each agent (society) is subdivided into social behaviors where individual and social learning occur. The agent-agent interactions are carried out by their social behaviors; otherwise the agent-environment interactions through consumption of ecological resources by its social behaviors in repression and satisfaction. We distinguish social behavior…

Biogeographic Anomalies in Shore Flies as Revealed in Revision of the Shore-Fly Genus Subpelignus Papp (Diptera: Ephydridae)

2022

Subpelignus Papp is revised, including description of (1) a new species, S. gagnei Zatwarnicki and Mathis (New Zealand. North Island. ND: Whananaki South (35°31.1'S, 174°27.2'E); (2) two new combinations, Subpelignus antennalis (Aldrich, 1931) and Subpelignus limosinus (Becker, 1896); (3) a new synonym, S. hortobagensis Papp, 1983 = S. limosinus Becker; and (4) description of a new subgenus, Niratissa Zatwarnicki and Mathis, for S. maculipennis Mathis and Zatwarnicki. Descriptions of revised and the newly described species include some of the first illustrations of structures of the male terminalia. Detailed locality data for all species examined are provided. For perspective and to facilit…

Search for strong gravity signatures in same-sign dimuon final states using the ATLAS detector at the LHC

2012

A search for microscopic black holes has been performed in a same-sign dimuon final state using 1.3 fb[superscript −1] of proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The data are found to be consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model and the results are used to derive exclusion contours in the context of a low scale gravity model.

Croce e la modernità tedesca

2017

The book collects the proceedings of the international symposium held with the support of the DFG in 2016 at Villa Vigoni about the relationship between Benedetto Croce and German culture. In particular, the essays deal with the question of the crisis of modernity in German culture through a spectrum of inquiries ranging from Kant to Th. Mann.
