The Conference Reimagined. Postcards, Letters, and Camping Together in Undressed Places
2019
In this paper, five authors account for the rethinking of a conference as a series of postcards, letters, rules and silent moments so that traditional hierarchies of knowledge could be overturned or, at least, sidelined. We recount how the place we convened was enlisted as an actor and the dramas and devices we applied to encounter it. We use this accounting to problematize the conventional practices of goal-oriented meetings and co-authored papers as forms of academic meaning-making. In finding a meeting point where expertise was disorientated and status undressed, we were able to investigate the idea of co-being between human and nonhuman realities as the step social theory needs to take …

Polisemia di nòmos e l'esordio di Hipp. de genitura
2016
Far from being, as has been said, “the bizarrest beginning of all the Hippocratic writings (...) deserving of therapy”, this paper aims to show that the opening words of the Hippocratic writing “On Generation” (νόμοϲ μὲν πάντα κρατύνει), in itself echoing a famous Pindaric motto, seem to be used first of all in order to evoke a cultural, intellectual and scientific world, in which the nòmos has become one of the most important keywords of the time. From this point of view, the Pindaric quotation seems to be played out on the wide semantic range of nòmos as well as on the ambiguous meaning of the verb κρατύνω, which in this embryological context denote specifically the consolidation and hard…
Luokanopettajaopiskelijat tekstien tuottajina yhden yliopistovuoden aikana
2021
Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan luokanopettajaopiskelijoiden (n=54) kuvauksia tekstien tuottamisesta heidän ensimmäisen yliopistovuotensa aikana. Tutkimusaineistona olivat opiskelijoiden vastaukset lomakekyselyyn heidän ensimmäisenä ja toisena opiskeluvuotenaan. Tutkimusaineisto analysoitiin aineistolähtöisen sisällönanalyysin ja kvantifioinnin avulla. Opiskelijat kielensivät tuottaneensa ensimmäisen opiskeluvuotensa aikana 102 erilaista tekstiä. Heidän tieteellisten tekstien tuottamisen kuvauksistaan hahmotettiin kirjoittajaminään ja tekstin tuottamisen osataitoihin (tekstilaji-, prosessi-, tekniset ja ajattelun taidot) liittyvät näkökulmat. Molempina vuosina korostuivat tekstilaji-, pros…
Measuring syntactic complexity in learner Finnish
2020
In the study of complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF), syntactic complexity can be measured by a multitude of measures. Traditionally, the measures are quantitative and they use production units such as words, clauses, T -units, and sentences. Despite the vast number o f measures available, many studies have used only one or two of them, or parallel ones tapping the same component of complexity. The present study explores syntactic complexity using seven frequently used quantitative complexity measures to gauge different facets of complexity in written learner Finnish. The data of the study consist of texts written by adult and adolescent language learners, and they cover proficiency level…
Words, clauses, sentences, and T-units in learner language: Precise and objective units of measure?
2020
In research on learner language complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF), syntactic complexity is often studied with quantitative measures based on words, clauses, sentences, and T-units. The findings have been mixed, but segmenting learner language into these units of measure has seldom been problematised, even if the need for accurate coding is well known. The present study explores words, clauses, sentences, and T-units as production units in written learner language using a corpus of 352 L2 Finnish texts (28,813 words). The results illustrate how written learner language can be hard to fit into the production unit categories, which are essential for the most frequently used quantitative m…
Guiding and assessing development of L2 writing process : the role of peer collaboration
2022
This study, informed by Vygotskian notion of mediation and reporting on a partnership between a researcher (the first author) and a teacher (the second author), aims at exploring how peers’ comments can inform teacher assessment and guidance of learners’ L2 (second/foreign language) writing. The participants were 19 L2 English learners in an upper secondary school in Finland. We largely focus on the notes that one pair of learners made on each other’s essays and how they responded to peer assistance. Triangulating these data with classroom observation and a questionnaire, we traced how learners co-constructed their understanding of how their texts can be developed. The foci and how the iden…
Motivation to learn English : a case study of a 7th grade class
2017
Motivaatiota ja sen vaikutusta kielen oppimiseen on tutkittu laajalti. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää 7. luokkalaisten opiskelumotivaatiota, kun he ovat aloittaneet yläkoulun uudessa koulussa, uudessa luokassa ja uuden opettajan kanssa. Keskeisenä kysymyksenä on: Mikä saa 7. luokkalaisen ymmärtämään motivaation merkityksen englannin kielen opiskelussa? Tämä tutkimus keskittyy oppilaiden narratiivisiin kirjoitelmiin, jossa he tuovat esiin omia näkökulmiaan ja ajatuksiaan oppimiseen motivoivista tekijöistä sekä oppimisen motivaatiota heikentävistä tekijöistä. Tutkimus toteutettiin narratiivisten kirjoitelmien avulla tapaustutkimuksena. Tutkimukseen osallistui oppilaita vain yhde…
O prozie Šejli Šehabović - na marginesach dyskursu wojennego
2020
The collection of Šehabović’s stories Priće - żeński rod, mnoźina is an important voice in the discussion on the situation of women in post-war Bośnia. An artistically interesting idea of a juxtaposition of female voices, accompanied by representatives of otherdiscriminated groups in society (gays), allowed the Bosnian author to face current and socialiy important problems. It is a faithful literaturę with a deeply anti-war language. Narrative Solutions, the type of heroes and the way of their presentation brings Śejla Śehabović’s prose closer to women’s writing (żeńsko pismo), and far away from the heroic paradigm dominating in Bosnia-Herzegovinan’s war discourse.
